are you doing the round of applause for the NHS workers?

We had a note through our door about this (good way to spread germs....) asking us to join in with a hand clap for NHS workers. Apparently we are supposed to stand on our door step at a set time and do a round of applause for them. At least 4 of my close neighbours will be getting children to sleep so I won't be doing it but will you?

There was some clapping and shrieking from a couple of houses in my street. The usual suspects.

corlan · 26/03/2020 20:03

Great - we're getting a whole firework display now!

MarshaBradyo · 26/03/2020 20:03

I haven’t seen other people for a while feel quite moved

EarringsandLipstick · 26/03/2020 20:03

I live in a large estate. I could hear a small smattering of applause, but none in my small cul-de-sac part.

Bobismyfriend · 26/03/2020 20:03

My daughter works for the NHS. I just asked if she wants me to clap for her. She sent me a gif of someone throwing up

HollySideEyes · 26/03/2020 20:04

Lol Bob.

ILoveYou3000 · 26/03/2020 20:04

My whole street was out; has left me feeling quite emotional.

When I say out, many just opened windows, everyone kept their distance.

Sagelistener · 26/03/2020 20:04

People are doing here too ... so we joined it and it was actually kind of nice even if a little crazy!

Fishlegs · 26/03/2020 20:04

NHS worker here. Everyone on my street was out on their doorsteps, well socially distanced. It was really moving.

Strawberrycreamsundae · 26/03/2020 20:04

Watching it on tv it’s blatantly obvious that if there are tv cameras around then people will show up! 🙄

SabineSchmetterling · 26/03/2020 20:05

People did it in my street. I was sceptical about the whole thing but it was lovely and brought a tear to my eye. I joined in at the window.

Froq · 26/03/2020 20:05

Lots did it here, car toots and some singing too. Actually brought a tear to my eye!

Although the majority are holiday homers who’ve made our days miserable since they arrived a couple of weeks ago so I’ll be back to being annoyed tomorrow.

eosmum · 26/03/2020 20:06

Our whole estate came out in Ireland though. Very emotional.

MarshaBradyo · 26/03/2020 20:06

Way better than I thought it would be feel a bit teary

TheWordmeister · 26/03/2020 20:06

Not a peep in our village. We have sheep but no sheeple.

TroysMammy · 26/03/2020 20:06

I suppose being a GP Receptionist I'm a key worker but I find it extremely embarrassing and awkward.

UnaCorda · 26/03/2020 20:06

Claptrap.

bellinisurge · 26/03/2020 20:06

Car horns, the odd firework and applause. Cheesy? Yes. But, so what? Please god I don't get the opportunity to thank someone in person.

polkadotpixie · 26/03/2020 20:07

No. I work for the NHS and am very grateful to the frontline staff but I find it a bit cringey tbh

Also I've just put my toddler to bed and if it sets the dog off barking then it's back to square one for bedtime

Lamentations · 26/03/2020 20:07

My street was out, no TV cameras. Everyone shouting 'goodnight' to each other from the doorstep afterwards whether we'd met before or not. So lovely.

LyingWitchInTheWardrobe · 26/03/2020 20:07

It's actually not just NHS either, we've had an e-mail from our council chief executive asking for people to do this for ALL frontline staff including council workers.

ExclamationPerfume · 26/03/2020 20:08

That was lovely. So many neighbours young and old out clapping. People beeping their car horns.

SinglePringle · 26/03/2020 20:08

My street came out to clap.

In Italy, France and Spain it’s seen as a moment of unity.

In the UK, ‘virtue signalling’

It’s more than just applause. It’s a nationwide acknowledgment of ‘we see your effort. You are not alone’.

It causes no harm to support people.

ChicCroissant · 26/03/2020 20:08

Yes, quite a few of us out here and fireworks going off in the distance - nice to see so many of my neighbours all at once and check they are still fine.

Not everyone requires a TV camera to show up.

YgritteSnow · 26/03/2020 20:08

Same. On my busy, anonymous London Street, everyone just came out or came to their windows to clap and cheer. Cars were driving along beeping and flashing their lights. It was brilliant actually and made me feel connected to everyone out there.
