are you doing the round of applause for the NHS workers?

We had a note through our door about this (good way to spread germs....) asking us to join in with a hand clap for NHS workers. Apparently we are supposed to stand on our door step at a set time and do a round of applause for them. At least 4 of my close neighbours will be getting children to sleep so I won't be doing it but will you?

I was a little cynical bit it was amazing! Clapping cheering whistling and fireworks.

Considering we've spent the day avoiding eachother, this was such a lovely way to bring people together.

RedRosie · 26/03/2020 20:37

Very moving, yes. Genuinely.

How many of you are willing to pay more tax? Because that would be more of a tribute to our NHS.

gerbo · 26/03/2020 20:38

I'd pay more tax tomorrow. Any day.

HavenDilemma · 26/03/2020 20:38

Would I hell! Bandwagon lunacy. It's childish and I'm cringing for all those who took part.

They deserve appreciation - absolutely. This however, is not the way to do it. Smacks of "Can I join in?" rather than simply speaking your appreciation to a member of NHS the next time you're in the hospital for whatever reason. Which would be far more meaningful and genuine.

LoudBatPerson · 26/03/2020 20:39

Our street and the surrounding streets were very loud with it.

Although, then people started grouping together for a chat, shaking hands and even hugging, so we headed inside.

Was lovely up to the point when everyone decided to forget social distancing and instead risked increasing the spread and putting more workload on the very people they just thanked. Hmm

APatchyTomCat · 26/03/2020 20:40

20:00 He's whooping and clapping like a loon.
20:30 so am I

It went on for half an hour?!

Yeah well I was watching Emmerdale Grin

Ha no, 20:00:30- in my foggy state of unBritishness I got my times mixed up Blush

QueenofLouisiana · 26/03/2020 20:40

We clapped, in the darkness (rural Suffolk, no streetlights) others were clapping too. I don’t know who they were, I don’t really know where they were- noise travels a long way across fields and when there is no traffic. It was good to come together to support people caring for others.
No, I didn’t vote Tory and as a public sector worker, I’d gladly support a pay rise and an increase in tax to pay for it. Until then, they have my heartfelt applause.

gerbo · 26/03/2020 20:41

Oh fgs. I never see any staff, as I'm severely asthmatic so stuck in the house for the foreseeable. Shall I send smoke signals?!

Not one ounce of mawkish or cringey here.

I'm cringing for you that you're so scaredy you daren't join in a one minute long small sign of community solidarity. Really...?!

gerbo · 26/03/2020 20:42

I'm rarely cross but the naysayers are really getting my goat this evening! I'll bloody clap my brother loudly and proudly. And I know from him and another poorly nurse that it DOES mean a lot. From the horses mouth.

Steamfan · 26/03/2020 20:43

Fireworks - bloody bastarding fireworks. DH, DS,DIL all NHS - not amused

Pinkpeone1 · 26/03/2020 20:43

Sounds like you've been in isolation too long...

Knobblybobbly · 26/03/2020 20:43

So I said I’d find it cringey, but I actually got a bit emo!

wanderlove · 26/03/2020 20:43

We hung out of our loft windows. Wasn't quite sure how it would feel, worried it might feel a bit cringey or jumping on a bandwagon. But it didn't it felt quite beautiful hearing all the clapping echoing around our little village. Big mansions, little terraces. Cost nothing and I think showed a solidarity and caring for those at the front line. Was the opposite of what I thought it would be. Try it tomorrow!

Knobblybobbly · 26/03/2020 20:44

If nothing else it’s just nice to know there are other people out there! Lol

StirCrazed · 26/03/2020 20:45

Well all horses are not the same. The medics I know think it is cringeworthy bollocks and point out that noone ever votes to invest more in the nhs. I guess that's why we are friends though - not partial to mawkish displays of self indulgent twaddle.

nowwaitaminute · 26/03/2020 20:45

No I find it very cringe worthy and almost patronizing!! There are many other ways to show support to nhs workers (staying at home for one 🙄) than standing at your front door in your pjs, clapping, it's not for the nhs staff. It's to make themselves feel better and feel supportive or like they have bloody accomplished something! It's a cop out really!!

IdblowJonSnow · 26/03/2020 20:47

We did it. It was lovely. Nearly didn't do it, so glad I joined in.

HavenDilemma · 26/03/2020 20:47

@Aragog Just because someone has a different opinion to you, does not make them "arseholes" as you so eloquently put it Hmm

YgritteSnow · 26/03/2020 20:47

This thread is a perfect example of how sour MN can be and how so often it just doesn't reflect RL at all. It's good to be reminded of that as it's so easy to get caught up in this forum and think that's how most people think and they just really don't.

mommybear1 · 26/03/2020 20:48

We did 👏🏻👏🏻 it was quite emotional hearing everyone join in. Yes some may say it's cringe but it's something, the NHS are doing an amazing job and we can all push and vote (hopefully) to get more resourcing them but why not in the meantime make a gesture.

HavenDilemma · 26/03/2020 20:49

TOTALLY agree Nowwaitaminute

FredaFrogspawn · 26/03/2020 20:50

It was nice and as much for the community as for nhs workers. It pulled people together a bit.

Dyrne · 26/03/2020 20:50

I absolutely love how some of the front line workers on this thread who admitted they’d find it cringeworthy are now being called arseholes and given biscuits by the very people who went outside to clap to apparently “show support” Hmm

RedRosie · 26/03/2020 20:52

@wanderlove I'm sure you didn't mean it that way. But yes, it costs nothing to clap.

We should be funding our National Heath Service better. With more tax. It's ours and it's there for us.

Nothing is more important than what they do. Nothing is more important than life.

Downton57 · 26/03/2020 20:55

I found it very moving and not in the least cringeworthy. My daughter is risking her life every day and she thoroughly deserves a round of applause.
