It’s been an expensive evening. Anyone else?

I’m avoiding the internet after tonight!

So far I’ve bought some seeds/ plants for the garden to keep us busy.

Some beauty products to make the most of all the time at home.

Some books for the dc and myself to read.

Some vitamins/supplements.

That’s it, no more non essentials now.

Foundation, Il Makiage. Thought I’d experiment whilst wfh. I’m start to really look old, skin tone needs serious work. I’ve gone a bit nuts with decent make up this last year, never having spent more than a couple of quid on it.

Other than that, I’ve deliberately avoided supermarkets. We don’t need anything yet, so it’s pointless contributing to the fuckwit panic buying.

VivaLeBeaver · 22/03/2020 22:31

Vegetable seeds.

Dickorydockwhatthe · 22/03/2020 22:32

Where did you buy the seeds from??

foamrolling · 22/03/2020 22:33

I'm sorry poet. Nobody should be in that position. The government should be ensuring everyone can manage financially not just salaried employees.

I do feel it's surprising that everyone was happy to see restaurants, pubs etc close down despite the economic impact but are happy to ensure all the people involved with delivering this stuff are continuing working. I read that amazon UK had been forcing their employees to do overtime in one of their sites. Its one thing having to work to deliver essential services, another being forced to work to deliver cases of wine and trampolines.

anothernewone · 22/03/2020 22:34

@PoetLauren sorry to hear that.

It's not lost on me that a lot of people are in a terrible position with work.

We're fortunate in that we can both wfh and are in jobs that are secure, at least in the short term ie next 12 month min.

In order to do these though we need to keep two young children entertained

musicposy · 22/03/2020 22:35

Where are people getting their seeds from? I want to make a vegetable garden this week.

musicposy · 22/03/2020 22:35

I can’t go out, btw, so has to be seeds online.

Marmite27 · 22/03/2020 22:36

Oi Cat and Sharing a Shell, and the next two number blocks dvds were my poison.

Grabbners · 22/03/2020 22:39

Yes I’m really sorry too poet, it’s a terribly worrying time for you. I hope the government do step up, and I hope you have friends or family who will support you.

I do realise how lucky I am to be able to have spent what I have tonight, and I am genuinely not intending to spend more now.

Poet I'm lucky in that I will be paid and have a job at the end of my isolation. I'm well aware others are not in the same situation. We never have extra money to spend, let alone at a time like this, so I totally get where you're coming from Flowers

Grabbners · 22/03/2020 22:40

And Standing, I’m sorry for the loss of your mum Flowers

Shock @ this thread. I naively thought people would be battening down the hatches in anticipation of a financial crash.

I had to shut down my business last week so now waiting on universal credit. No 80% for me as self employed. Two dc. Lone parent. Haven’t spent a single penny in a week out of pure fear we’ll be starving before UC kicks in in 5 weeks.

VivaLeBeaver · 22/03/2020 22:42

I got some seeds from Sutton’s website, some from Johnson’s, some from Amazon. There does seem to have been a real run on vegetable seeds, lots of sold out ones.

LER83 · 22/03/2020 22:42

Shit loads of books and maths/english workbooks, a printer, loads of stationary (miss read one product description and now have a million exercise books), have got my eye on a laminator which to be fair I've wanted for ages but oh thinks this is a ridiculous purchase! Have a feeling another laptop will be purchased as will have 3 children fighting over our 1 tmrw. With the money saved from dh not commuting/buying lunch should cover everything.

Nilbog · 22/03/2020 22:43

@PoetLauren

I might be able to give you a steer about your employment rights if you think that might help. PM me.

RUSU92 · 22/03/2020 22:44

I’ve bought some hand cream as my hands are getting really dry from all this bloody washing! And some posh soaps (Nesti Dante) which I’ve seen recommended on here and always thought were a bit pricey, but now I figure I deserve nice soaps! Also some canvases for painting to keep the DCs busy. I’m currently searching for some nice jersey pyjamas trousers.

CoronaIsComing · 22/03/2020 22:46

I spent £108 on Friday on some games, puzzles, exercise equipment, books and a couple of workbooks for DS. I’ve also ordered some lego and more jigsaw puzzles from Argos as DS has decided he actually likes puzzles. Anything to keep him off screens!

Tuliptulip · 22/03/2020 22:46

Can I please ask that anyone buying stuff to ease their self isolation tries to get it from independent shops rather than the big guys who will be getting plenty of business? So you want to buy books - your local bookshop will be able to order you any book that is in print (including school books). Or for garden supplies, look to your local garden centre and see if they will deliver. Our local butchers has started delivering as well. I know of too many local businesses which are struggling terribly at the moment.

Murinae · 22/03/2020 22:46

Nothing so far this week but went a bit mad last week. Bought loads of paint as I’m now home
for a few weeks, cat food from zooplus though that was my usual order. I bulk buy every few months and was getting low again. Quite lucky as this week it’s in short supply and none of our moggies favourite brand’s are available anymore. Bought a years supply of flea and worm treatment as well. Also bought 40kg of chicken food and a new Seasalt raincoat for me in their sale. Was a coat I’d been eyeing up a while and it was almost half price!

blue25 · 22/03/2020 22:48

Lots of books, board games, office chair, new bedding, stash of baking/crafting supplies, wine, beer and chocolate.

Aurorie11 · 22/03/2020 22:48

Disney+ subscription

WhentheDealGoesDown1 · 22/03/2020 22:51

I guess we have just spent some of what we would have spent on our touring caravan holidays that have all been cancelled and the decorating we planned to do next year but bought it forward

SeasonallySnowyPeasant · 22/03/2020 22:51

A laptop for the DC
Craft supplies for the DC
Gardening supplies for the DC

Breaking the theme, a bread maker.

DP will never mock my Brexit supplies again.

musicposy · 22/03/2020 22:52

Tuliptulip that’s a good point. I went on our local garden centre website after you said that and noticed they’re now offering to deliver locally. You can’t order online as such, but I’ll get together an idea of what I’d like and phone them up. Better than giving the money to amazon.

LightDrizzle · 22/03/2020 22:55

A 2.44m diameter pool with filter and cover from Decathlon!
