I'll start with one that drives me crackers, Louboutin.

Is it -
LOO-boo-tan

Loo-BOO-tan
or
Loo-Boo-TAN

Please put me out of my misery!
(As you might have guessed, they're not in my price range however it's pronounced.)

Beaulieu they say beuw-Lee
But dibden perlieu is per-loo

Always confused me.

Suffolk is full of strange pronunciations

Skyejuly · 09/03/2020 12:52

Buew*

Chorizo is cho-REE-tho as 'z' is pronounced as 'th' in Spanish.

As a previous poster pointed out, that's just one pronunciation. In Latin American countries and in the US, it's cho-REE-so.

All the staff called her catriona, cat-ri-own-a.

All the Catrionas/Caitrionas I've ever met as distinct from Katrinas have pronounced it with a slight diphthong in the middle, so Cat-REE-uh-na. It doesn't sound the same as Katrina.

fishonabicycle · 09/03/2020 13:10

Siren sester

fishonabicycle · 09/03/2020 13:11

And my old school mate was kt Ree onna

SenecaFallsRedux · 09/03/2020 13:13

I've known several Catrionas in the US. They all pronounce it exactly the same as Katrina. But sometimes have to correct people who say Cat-tree-own-a.

Wonkybanana · 09/03/2020 13:23

Slaithwaite is Slow-itt - with the 'ow' as in wow, not low.

One word I've avoided saying, and not solely to avoid sounding like a pretentious wanker, is oxymoron. Back when I was young (80s), I could swear it was pronounced oxIMMeron, but now it seems to have morphed into oxy-moor-on. What's with that?

QueenOfOversharing · 09/03/2020 14:44

Hegemony

This trips me up every time. In my mind it's hedgey-money.

🤦🏼‍♀️

How do you pronounce Quesadilla? The only time I've attempted it, the waiter looked confused and had no idea what I was trying to say.

lazylinguist · 09/03/2020 15:22

Quesadilla is keh sa dee ya.

lazylinguist · 09/03/2020 15:24

I could swear it was pronounced oxIMMeron
Really?! Never heard that (even in the 80s)! It's always been oxy moron.

IntermittentParps · 09/03/2020 15:25

Hard g - goo-gores?
Yes, this one.

Hebe is 'Heebee' like heebie-jeebies.

Tintwistle - Tinsel I have NEVER heard that Confused Is it a name, like Featherstonhaugh?

lazylinguist · 09/03/2020 15:26

As a previous poster pointed out, that's just one pronunciation. In Latin American countries and in the US, it's cho-REE-so.

Yep. Definitely not choritso or koritso though!

Hegemony
This trips me up every time. In my mind it's hedgey-money.

How DO you say it then? Hard g?

Clymene · 09/03/2020 15:40

I say huh-geh-muh-nee which I think is the English pronunciation (and was what I was taught at university)

Krong · 09/03/2020 15:40

Estrella. The Spanish woman in the pub told me you don’t pronounce the L, but then someone else said when they went to Spain they did so I’m stumped.

In Spain, depending on where you are, the 'll' is between a 'y' sound and an 'ly' sound. Where I live (North) it's 'pie-el-ya', but in Sevilla it would be 'pie-ey-ya'. So I say 'Estrel-ya' but others might say 'estrey-ya'. But most say something subtly inbetween.

Clymene · 09/03/2020 15:41

I think the US pronunciation is hedge-EH-muh-nee

IntermittentParps · 09/03/2020 15:57

'hedge-EH-muh-nee'
This is what I'd say, but I'm British. I think I'm saying it wrong!

blinded101 · 09/03/2020 16:53

I was taught Hedgeh-MOney

QueenOfOversharing · 09/03/2020 16:56

Consensus is hedge-EH-muh-nee

I'll forget that by the next time I see it.

redwoodmazza · 09/03/2020 17:13

Why, when it is spelled LAS Vegas, does everyone seem to pronounce it LOS Vegas??? It does my head in...

IntermittentParps · 09/03/2020 17:21

redwoodmazza, yes, that bamboozles me too!

kittyhello · 09/03/2020 17:27
