I'll start with one that drives me crackers, Louboutin.

Is it -
LOO-boo-tan

Loo-BOO-tan
or
Loo-Boo-TAN

Please put me out of my misery!
(As you might have guessed, they're not in my price range however it's pronounced.)

OP posts:
QueenOfOversharing · 09/03/2020 00:52

Oops - Ki-nYuch-ur

QueenOfOversharing · 09/03/2020 00:53

@pinkrocker

E-thee-ree-ul

MrsDrSpencerReid · 09/03/2020 00:58

A L’Occitane store recently opened near me and they ran a campaign on how to pronounce it.

Lock see tan

Culzean culane
.Milngavie. Mul-guy
.Auchtermuchty.

.Kirkcudbright
.Kilconquhar
. Kill-cong-ker

Not sure about the other 2, I would just guess they way they are written, but I'm probably wrong.

Myimaginarycathasfleas · 09/03/2020 01:05

Chagrin - Shag-rang (but a swallowed g, not a sounded one, iyswim)

HarrietThePi · 09/03/2020 01:24

Featherstonehaugh = Fan Shaw

What, what, what? Can anyone explain this please? For my nerves.

Latte, I don't know what's right or wrong but I say it as Lat-Tay but I don't put a lot of emphasis on the "lat" if that makes sense.

Ethereal I say it as it looks - eth-er -al. Is that wrong?

Wrath is one that confuses me as I have heard it pronounced wroth and wrath(rath).

campion · 09/03/2020 01:52

Ethereal: the last 4 letters are pronounced exactly as the word real.
The first letter (E) is pronounced with more of an 'i' sound (think emergency) than an 'e' (think egg). The second 'e' has an 'ee' sound.

@Awwlookatmybabyspider

Hard c is pronounced like c in cat.
Soft c is like c in ceiling.
Hard g is pronounced like g in get.
Soft c is like g in gentle.

In English, c and g usually make their soft sounds when they follow e, i or y.

AlexaAmbidextra · 09/03/2020 02:33

And if you want directions to Stiffkey in Norfolk you need to ask for Stewkey. For Cley it’s Cly. Happisburgh is Hazebruh. Wymondham is Windum. Mundesley is Munzley. And many, many more. 😂

Not quite - the last "real" is pronounced /ree-uhl/ two syllables.

Sprigware · 09/03/2020 04:43

@JuanSheetIsPlenty, Louvaine is ‘Loo-VEN’, roughly.

CatSmize · 09/03/2020 04:49

@claptomania

Chorizo is cho-REE-tho as 'z' is pronounced as 'th' in Spanish.

CatSmize · 09/03/2020 04:55

I only found out the other day that whooping (as in cough) is pronounced 'hooping'! I always heard it in my head as 'wooping'.

lazylinguist · 09/03/2020 07:43

Probably making myself look a complete dick now, but What does hard and soft mean in pronunciations.

A hard c sounds like k. A sift c sounds like s. A hard g is like in 'game'. A soft g is like in 'George'.

mintich · 09/03/2020 07:47

Yes its Mo- ett. We work closely with the company

BuzzShitbagBobbly · 09/03/2020 07:47

In a similar vein, diphtheria is more like "diff-theer-ee-a", not "dip-theeer-ee-a"

(Thank you Call The Midwife)

mummmy2017 · 09/03/2020 07:53

french chignon... The hair style.

BuzzShitbagBobbly · 09/03/2020 07:57

I say Chignon like "shee-nyon"

Likethebattle · 09/03/2020 08:27

*sorry typo but Catriona is cat-reena Blush culzean is Cul-ane not ‘een’ at the end. Strathaven is another odd one as it’s pronounced ‘stray-ven’. I once spoke to a lovely English lady who kept saying ‘Strath-haven’ and I had to gently correct her.

drspouse · 09/03/2020 08:47

@CatSmize unless you're from Latin America in which case it's cho-REE-so.

drspouse · 09/03/2020 08:49

Oh and let's not forget
Tintwistle - Tinsel
Beauchamp - Beecham

JKScot4 · 09/03/2020 09:56

.Culzean - Kull-ane
.Milngavie - Mulguy
.Auchtermuchty - Auk ter muck tay
.Kirkcudbright - Kir coo bray
.Kilconquhar - Kin uk ar

Pharmaceutical = Farma-syoo-tickle

'Syoo' rhymes with 'phew' and is stressed on the 'syoo'

Iminaglasscaseofemotion · 09/03/2020 11:36

I worked in a nursery for a short period and there was a little girl called catriona. All the staff called her catriona, cat-ri-own-a. I thought that was very strange. I still wonder if that was the way her mum intended it to be pronounced, or whether they were just saying it wrong.

managedmis · 09/03/2020 11:40

Thanks, Hilda
