I'll start with one that drives me crackers, Louboutin.

Is it -
LOO-boo-tan

Loo-BOO-tan
or
Loo-Boo-TAN

Please put me out of my misery!
(As you might have guessed, they're not in my price range however it's pronounced.)

Hafan Y Mor is Havan uh more

Hafan means Haven and Mor means Sea.

PolloDePrimavera · 09/03/2020 20:56

Louboutin - Loo boo ta(n) the final n is very soft. In French, -in is pronounced the same as Boursin, remember the advert?!
L'Occitane- Lock see tan with a hard n at the end because it is followed by a vowel, unlike in the example of Louboutin above.
Moët - mow ett because of the umlaut on the e - ë, otherwise it would be Mow way.
Hermès - ur mez, it is a French company, the French version of Hermes. The accent on the second e means the pronunciation has to sound like the e in egg.
Givenchy- zhee vo(n) shee
Parure- par urrrrr
Latte - definitely la TAY with a short a like the a in can.

Don't know much but I know languages shizzle.

Funny, I am half French and we pronounce it Lo-si-tan in France but keep on arguing with me, you might win at the end.

Well I'm not even half French (though I have been a French teacher for over 20 years). But I've just watched Olivier Baussan (Frenchman and founder of L'Occitane) talking about it on a video and he absolutely 100% said lox-ee-tahn.

Magdalen College is pronounced Maudlin!

Auchincruive - Och-in-croove
Culzean - Cullane
Sanquhar - Sank-waar

Vulgarlady · 09/03/2020 21:35

Hecate...how do you say it?

SenecaFallsRedux · 09/03/2020 21:44

Hecate

I say something like "hekkat", accent on first syllable

notanotherjigsawpiece · 09/03/2020 21:47

The Irish name Blaithin. It’s pronounced Blaw-heen. (And not Bleh-thin which is what I said, to great consternation)

1066vegan · 09/03/2020 21:47

If Hecate was an English name then it would be pronounced to rhyme with gate, but it's Greek so the final e needs to be pronounced separately.

ageingdisgracefully · 09/03/2020 21:47

Pedagogy?

Is it PED-uh-gog-ee or peduh-GOG-ee or PED-uh-GODGE-ee or something else?

iklboo · 09/03/2020 21:48

Hecate - Heck-a-tay

Hermes - Useless Bastards

Myimaginarycathasfleas · 09/03/2020 23:11

Isn't the Italian "a" in pasta somewhere between the short British "a" and the American broad "a"? So British people went in one direction with it and Americans in another.

Same with risotto - the "o" sound is somewhere between a short and long "o".

Brits have gone with rizz-OTT-owe, Americans with rizz-OWE-toe.
The American version is actually more consistent but it makes my hair curl.

HarrietThePi · 10/03/2020 00:35

I thought of a word that I'm never sure how to say.

Legumes.

HerBigChance · 10/03/2020 01:35

Lay-gooms

MrsSiba · 10/03/2020 01:38

HarrietThePi

Legumes is leg Humes

I just heard on the tele a news reporter saying 'contributing' pronounced as cun-TRIB-uting. I have always said CON-tributing. Thoughts?

QueenOfOversharing · 10/03/2020 08:30

@MrsSiba

That one is like controversy

CON-troh-versy

con-TRO-versy

I get hyper aware of my pronunciation if I have to say it aloud.

Clymene · 10/03/2020 08:43

I think stress on 2nd syllable in controversy is uk pronunciation.

I put stress on 1st syllable in contribution but on 2nd in contributing Grin

QueenOfOversharing · 10/03/2020 09:02

I put stress on 1st syllable in contribution but on 2nd in contributing

There's always one 🙄😂

For historical reasons, Arkansas follows a French influenced pronunciation, and Kansas does not.

But interestingly, the name for people from those places are pronounced essentially the same: Kansan and Arkansan.

SenecaFallsRedux · 10/03/2020 10:25

A US state name that people from outside the US often get wrong is Maryland.

drspouse · 10/03/2020 10:29

Oh and it's St Louie (the city), not St Lewis.

BuzzShitbagBobbly · 10/03/2020 10:31

A US state name that people from outside the US often get wrong is Maryland.

Bit like Marylebone in London.

It's more like Marley'bone.
