Have you ever known someone who is the opposite of their name?

Obviously doesn't apply to people with non descriptive names!

I've been emailing a customer services person for a couple of days today called Melody. Ridiculously, in my mind I'd imagined her sounding all girly.

She called me today to resolve the issue I've been having. A more gravelly voiced and monotone lady I have never spoken to in my life.

Made me think of other descriptive names, and if people generally live up to them or are the opposite of them Grin

KnifeAngel · 04/03/2020 15:52

My Dd's dance teacher is called Joy. There is no joy to her at all.

abitshitsorry · 04/03/2020 15:53

Mycatismadeofstringcheese · 04/03/2020 16:05

I worked with someone whose surname was Divine. (He wasn’t)

sockittome123 · 04/03/2020 16:07

I once knew a Serena who was not serene at all - in fact, she wasn't very nice either!

FriedasCarLoad · 04/03/2020 16:11

I once knew a Happy who was grumpy, and a Peace who was a drama queen Grin.

(Both from a region where children are often named after their mother's feelings when they're born. Mine would have ended up being called OWWWWW).

Etinox · 04/03/2020 16:17

I know a very grumpy Joy too,
I had a boyfriend with the surname- it was not meant to be...

AhoyMrBeaver · 04/03/2020 16:17

Rich, who is always in debt.

Another Joy(less).

Christian who got in trouble at school for trying to carve the Sigil of Baphomet into a desk.

Bezalelle · 04/03/2020 16:19

I know a great gallumphing girl named Grace.

Neither was the Serena I knew, she was the side kick of the school bully.

I know a Hope who is the most pessimistic person I have ever met.

KnifeAngel · 04/03/2020 16:22

A classmate of my Dd's who was Blessing. I'm not sure the teacher thought he was.

Pavlova31 · 04/03/2020 16:24

I once knew a guy surname of Merryman.
The most dour, sharp natured, fault finding person i have ever met Grin

MissingLinker · 04/03/2020 16:26

I know a six foot seven Mr Little!

BarkandCheese · 04/03/2020 16:27

I don’t know her, but I was recently in the queue at IKEA behind a tweenage girl who was having a right old strop and sulk at her mum. Her name was Merry.

cobwebsoncornices · 04/03/2020 16:29

A couple of decades ago when it was quite an unusual name I knew a little girl called Grace. She had none! I also knew a Prudence who was anything but.
I've always loved the name Meredith but refused to consider it for DD in case it was shortened to Merry & she turned out to be a grumpy so & so.

ColaPip · 04/03/2020 16:39

A really grumpy receptionist at GP surgery when I was a kid - her name was Joy.

And a primary school teacher called Patience. On reflection, she could have taken Joy's job at the surgery!

TeaAddict235 · 04/03/2020 17:51

Highly unkind of you @abitshitsorry

She didn't name herself and who cares what the ancient meaning may have been. Non white people in Spain are called Blanca all of the time.

PigletJohn · 04/03/2020 18:30

Lord Adonis.

Lazydaisydaydream · 04/03/2020 18:32

I used to know a girl called Princess. She was an absolute Tomboy.... I always wondered whether she always would have been or if it was a rebellion against her name Grin

8by8 · 04/03/2020 18:35

I know a Hunter who is now vegan and has been nicknamed Gatherer :)

Frenchw1fe · 04/03/2020 18:42

I knew a woman with the surname Sunshine, tbf it was a married name.
She wasn't a ray of sunshine.

ShowOfHands · 04/03/2020 18:46

My swimming teacher was called Joy. She was a hatchet-faced purveyor of misery.

I also met a little girl called Prayshus once. Pronounced Precious. Or screamed "precious you little fucker". Seemed v sad.

Doodlesquah1 · 04/03/2020 18:47

I know an Angel who is the total opposite of the word! I do love the name though

turquoisesapphire · 04/03/2020 18:48

abitshit it’s just a jewel name, girls called Ruby aren’t red either.

I’ve known several Joys who are really miserable.

missing I wonder if we knew the same one Grin

Councilworker · 04/03/2020 18:55

I also knew a miserable woman called Joy. Seems to be a tough name to live upto.
A teacher friend said he had siblings in his school. He described them as Excel who doesn't and Success who will be.
Worked with a man called Wiseman who I often wondered how he managed to leave the house each day such was his stupidity.

I know there is nominative determinism (Dr Payne, Teachers called Mr Chalk etc). I wonderif this is reverse nominative determinism.
