Have you ever known someone who is the opposite of their name?

Obviously doesn't apply to people with non descriptive names!

I've been emailing a customer services person for a couple of days today called Melody. Ridiculously, in my mind I'd imagined her sounding all girly.

She called me today to resolve the issue I've been having. A more gravelly voiced and monotone lady I have never spoken to in my life.

Made me think of other descriptive names, and if people generally live up to them or are the opposite of them Grin

@abitshitsorry me too! I wonder if it's the same one!

Zisforstripyoss · 05/03/2020 21:28

I know a very skinny guy called Mr Large. Mrs Large is slim too!

iklboo · 05/03/2020 21:32

I wonder what Cher’s daughter chastity makes of it all

He's called Chaz now.

Merlotmerlotmerlot · 05/03/2020 21:44

NC for this as its specific and outing.

My name means warrior/fighter. I'm the biggest wuss ever. But my dd's name is related to something spiky and tenacious. Describes her PERFECTLY

FranKatzenjammer · 05/03/2020 21:46

I teach a boy called Excellence, which is rather a misnomer...

BillywigSting · 05/03/2020 21:52

I knew a a Harmony who was in some sort of drama every other week and a clinically depressed Hope.

I actually really like Hope, she's lovely, and if she was well she would have plenty of hope for her future (I certainly do, she is young and could so much), but she isn't and she doesn't, though she is getting better, very slowly.

I had a patisserie teacher named Mrs Sweet who was a bit of a dragon so not sure if nominative determinism was in effect there or the opposite. She was an incredible baker but sweet natured she was not.

Quizeerascal · 05/03/2020 21:52

I've know a very Joyful Joy and a very Hopeful Hope. I knew a Grace who wasn't very graceful but she taught me to be more gracious. I had a teacher called Mrs Littleboy who obviously wasn't a little boy Grin

My friend's Mum was named Gay (born in the days when it meant happy and light-hearted). She was a very nice, but always quite serious, woman.

Cassandrainthenight · 05/03/2020 22:24

Somebody at work is Mr Coldbreath. Pretty sure his breath is warm Smile

motortroll · 05/03/2020 22:36

I taught a blessing....he most certainly was not!!

Also at school we had an exam invigilator called Mrs Pretty. My friend and I called her "mrs not very"

motortroll · 05/03/2020 22:38

Also knew 2 sisters called Patience and Verity.

Verity was a bitch and you had to have Patience for Patience as she was always late and away with the fairies!

PathOfLeastResitance · 05/03/2020 22:39

I’ve taught a child called Peace who was the exact opposite. Also taught a delightful little girl called Grace who fell over thin air.

motortroll · 05/03/2020 22:40

Oh and also taught a daisy who was a 6ft steam punk loving Tom boy. Really didn't suit her name!!

FredaFrogspawn · 05/03/2020 22:46

I taught a girl called Gift once some years ago - I wouldn’t wish her turn up on the birthday of my worst enemy.

Mumoftwoyoungkids · 05/03/2020 22:47

Nowhere near as good as some of these but I know a very tomboyish Lily.

MajesticWhine · 05/03/2020 23:06

These are hilarious Grin
We have a woman in my office called Comfort. You hardly need me to tell you the rest but I'm afraid she brings no comfort to anyone at all.

alloutoffucks · 06/03/2020 00:40

Worked with a Joy years ago. She was the most difficult woman I have ever worked with. Totally selfish and self centred.

ContessaferJones · 06/03/2020 00:48

I once knew a Dr Onion. He wasn't particularly alliumlike Grin

Cassandrainthenight · 06/03/2020 08:23

I only know one Joy and she's very loving and positive, just had to say, after all these negative examples ;)

AChickenCalledDaal · 06/03/2020 08:32

I know a Mr Friend who is well known for smiling to your face then stabbing you in the back.

Marilynmansonsothereye · 06/03/2020 14:23

I've known a Mister and Mrs Mould who were bakers. Sort of revelent to the thread! I've never liked adjectives for names. I've known a baby named 'Bonny' and thought what if she wants to be a radical feminist or a butch lesbian..
Joy is a lovely word and lovely name but a lot to live up to when life is nothing but sometimes!

spiderlight · 06/03/2020 16:00

The person who registered my dad's death was called Joy. She was absolutely lovely but her name couldn't be worse for her role! I suppose she registers births and marriages as well, so it balances out.

BurneyFanny · 06/03/2020 18:18

Gift means poison in German so her name works nicely there.

toffee1000 · 06/03/2020 19:07

I’ve only ever come across one Joy, she was a dinner lady at my primary school. I obviously don’t remember her much but she was OK overall.
My name means “the lame one” as it’s from the Roman Emperor Claudius who had a limp. I walk without any kind of limp at all! Occasionally I’ve sprained my ankle but it’s not a permanent thing.

It took me a while to work out “Justin”... Grin

bjoke · 07/03/2020 10:22

I once taught a girl named Beauty, she's anything but.
