Have you ever known someone who is the opposite of their name?

Obviously doesn't apply to people with non descriptive names!

I've been emailing a customer services person for a couple of days today called Melody. Ridiculously, in my mind I'd imagined her sounding all girly.

She called me today to resolve the issue I've been having. A more gravelly voiced and monotone lady I have never spoken to in my life.

Made me think of other descriptive names, and if people generally live up to them or are the opposite of them Grin

@ednatheevilwitch that properly made me snort Grin

Another Joy one. To add to the stereotype she was also the receptionist at our doctors, miserable cow. The only time she expressed Joy was when telling you to call back next week 😏

I know a toddler grace, nice kid with a funny little character but graceful she is not. A school friend called Hope, who was probably the most negative person in our circle.

HearMeSnore · 04/03/2020 21:50

A friend of a friend is called Unity. She has twins.

ArtichokeAardvark · 04/03/2020 21:53

I know a Charity. She's completely tightfisted though - Scrooge incarnate!

I work with a woman who is a total tomboy, wears masculine clothes and has a very somber manner. Her middle name is Princess Grin

My DPs story is that he grew up near a very religious family with two daughters named Chastity and Temperance. Turns out that solely promoting abstinence and teetotalism isn't conducive to a balanced sensible individual and both girls had children in their teens and assorted drug and alcohol issues.

After the girls left home the family had another baby on the way. I'm guessing they didn't name it Drunken Jezebel but with their track record that might have been the best option.

Gatherer definitely wins 😁😁😁

I knew an oriental kitten called Zen. Beautiful cat, cool name. Then he grew up and spent his adult life hissing, yowling and starting fights.

I once worked with lovely a 6ft 6 tall, 17 stone Charge Nurse called Mr Small.

MsTSwift · 04/03/2020 23:13

Always think names like Grace and Willow are quite bold as you don’t know how the child will turn out. I know two rather large stolid Graces and their names seem abit cruel as they really aren’t. Likewise I was at school with a very large Willow.

BahMooQuack · 05/03/2020 06:50

Claphands sort of in your vein, I have a distant cousin called Dick. He is a rather nasty piece of work and his wife is as well. (Gossipers, hypocrites, shit stirrers).

I call them 'Dick and Dickless.

Which was fine until DC1 aged 4 called over to the wife one christrmas. Grin

ProfYaffle · 05/03/2020 06:58

A church local to me used to have a Reverend Pagan.

EoinMcLovesCakeJumper · 05/03/2020 08:15

I knew a Nurse Payne, a kinder nurse you couldn’t have wished for.

My name means graceful... I could injure myself standing still in an empty room Grin My dancing was the cause of fear and dread across many a nineties and noughties nightclub... 💃🤕

JoyMyNameisJoy · 05/03/2020 09:05

@ProfYaffle I used to know a Kristian Pagan which surely is the most contrary name ever?

Dowser · 05/03/2020 12:17

There was a nurse called Delicious..not sure how she tasted..but she always seemed very happy.
I wonder what Cher’s daughter chastity makes of it all

Sonichu · 05/03/2020 12:20

My mum wanted to call me Grace... that wouldn't have suited me at all lol

Dowser · 05/03/2020 12:24

My Joy story...the deputy head at my children’s primary was a Joy. She was an incredible k capable woman. Had been a nurse. I bet her ward ran like clockwork. She was a lovely person. She really had the kids backs.
Organised all sorts of things for the kids, that involved the staff doing something fun for the kids.
She didn’t last long. Couple of years maybe, then got her own school..it didn’t take long before the school returned to its boring miserableness, once the Joy was taken out of it. ☹️
