Have you ever known someone who is the opposite of their name?

Obviously doesn't apply to people with non descriptive names!

I've been emailing a customer services person for a couple of days today called Melody. Ridiculously, in my mind I'd imagined her sounding all girly.

She called me today to resolve the issue I've been having. A more gravelly voiced and monotone lady I have never spoken to in my life.

Made me think of other descriptive names, and if people generally live up to them or are the opposite of them Grin

Had a school appeal once for a very pregnant lady, who brought a toddler who rampaged around; his name was Peace. The baby was going to be called Famous.

fromagefreak · 04/03/2020 19:02

I knew a girl called Verity who used to play with my daughter. She was the most atrocious bare-faced liar and if she hadn't been quite so awful the irony would have been amusing.

OneUsernameOnly · 04/03/2020 19:09

My dd has a classmate called Rebel - he is very conformist, follows rules religiously and wouldn’t say boo to a goose.

WarmSausageTea · 04/03/2020 19:15

I also knew a far from joyous Joy.

Nice word, perhaps not a great choice of name.

I worked with a Victor who was terrible at everything, he was like the anti-Midas.

bananaskinsnomnom · 04/03/2020 19:26

Not wanting to cause any offence for those who have chosen the name: Angel

I’ve worked with children for a decade. The name Angel makes my heart stop. I’ve never had an Angel who has been an Angel.

CruCru · 04/03/2020 19:32

Yes, I was also going to mention Angel. There’s one who comes to my local park who keeps being bellowed at by her mum (with reason).

There was an Angelique at my school who had the same issue.

Haworthia · 04/03/2020 19:36

I know a rather large Wren.

Xylophonics · 04/03/2020 19:42

I've known a Ms Meek who could be fierce when she wanted to be and a very pedantic Mr Careless

BahMooQuack · 04/03/2020 19:43

God I worked years ago with Joy who was a vicious bitch.

AndNoneForGretchenWieners · 04/03/2020 19:47

I know someone whose surname was Smelt, he didn't though.

DS went to sixth form with a Chastity who left to have a baby.

Hepzibar · 04/03/2020 19:47

I thinking you're on a hiding to nothing naming your child Joy.
As with other posters the Joy's I have known are anything but.

One I went to school with was a real misery guts, and the second also did not live up to her name (that's the kindest thing I can say)

SoMuchToBits · 04/03/2020 19:55

I know a Joy who is lovely. Actually two, if you include my elderly Auntie Joy!

AlexCabot · 04/03/2020 19:56

I once knew a delightful Joy!

I did go to uni with a fella called Freedom who ended up doing 15 years for armed robbery.

JoyMyNameisJoy · 04/03/2020 19:57

I have name changed to say I am all the grumpy Joys you have ever known! (I am not the vicious bitch one though!)
I hate my name, it's absolutely dreadful. It's too much to live up to, and when I went through a period of depression it was like some enormous cosmic joke that I didn't understand the punchline to.

On baby name threads people always rave about how lovely Joy is.
Just fucking don't do it!

Greenandcabbagelooking · 04/03/2020 19:58

@bananaskinsnomnom - me too. Angelique is lovely though.

My niece is called Joy, and she’s pretty chipper. However, she’s only 8 months old, so time will tell.

JoyMyNameisJoy · 04/03/2020 19:58

I have never been at school, college, or worked with another person with my name though.

BahMooQuack · 04/03/2020 19:59

That's the thing though... people remeber a grumpy Joy, They don't remenber a grumpy Pam or Beryl.

EoinMcLovesCakeJumper · 04/03/2020 20:00

I used to work with a guy whose surname was Prettyman. He was most certainly not. I also know an atheist called Faith.

On the flip side, I knew a police officer called PC Law. I saw more than one person burst out laughing when they found that out, often while they were in handcuffs that she'd just put onto them.

underneaththeash · 04/03/2020 20:00

Adjectives are never very good names....

JoyMyNameisJoy · 04/03/2020 20:03

I know a Russell who can move silently Wink

Lobsterquadrille2 · 04/03/2020 20:09

Alan Sugar 😀

Hepzibar · 04/03/2020 20:13

Adjectives are never very good names ha this is so true. My gran's NDN was called Grace, she was the least graceful person you could imagine - which my gran never tired from pointing out.

That said, I know sone lovely Graces'.

BarkandCheese · 04/03/2020 20:19

I know a Joy who’s lovely, although I’m sure like all of us she has her moments of being miserable and stroppy. It can’t be an easy name to carry off.

Bunchofkeys · 04/03/2020 20:22

I went to school with a Fleur who wasn’t at all flowery.

Ughmaybenot · 04/03/2020 20:22

My awful fathers equally awful mother is called Joy. She’s vile, a really nasty piece of work.
