Blimey. Married for 27 years.

OP posts:

How can he say he's had no secrets ever from his wife? Either he's suddenly 'turned' gay then or his wife was ok with living a lie for 27 years. I don't get it?!

karencantobe · 07/02/2020 15:25

And there have always been some scenes that are more accepting. As I said in the late 80s/early 90's the Goth scene was very accepting and liberal. It was very much if you treated people respectfully, generally people did not care about your sexuality.

Winstonwolfe · 07/02/2020 15:26

Interesting take on it from someone on Twitter, referring to his wife:

"She's known he was gay before they married. She's his manager. She's kept the papers quiet for years about #schofe and his "encounters". Now no one, including Ruth, dare criticise #schofield for fear of being called #homophobic. His wife is protecting his brand and her %"

This is very interesting! Agree that nobody can be seen to say a bad word about him now for fear of being called homophobic. I only saw the interview briefly but I did sense Eamonn wasn't completely playing ball, particularly with avoiding the hug. I wonder how Ruth really felt about having to participate in that display.

SarahAndQuack · 07/02/2020 15:26

@KatyCarrCan, what on earth are you talking about? I want to 'laud' him? Quote where in my posts you get that from. I barely know who he is and have no interest. I just object to the homophobia on this thread.

bohemia14 · 07/02/2020 15:28

@HopeYouStepOnALego I think you might have hit the nail on the head.

Encyclo · 07/02/2020 15:29

Anyone who walked with their gay family and friends in a Pride March back in the 80's and early 90s will have first hand experience of the type of homophobia that was present at the time.

Homophobia and fear of gay people.

It really was a very different time. A children's presenter coming out would likely find it very hard to build a career.

JuanSheetIsPlenty · 07/02/2020 15:29

If that’s true then she married and had kids with him for her career? Confused really?

FreakStar · 07/02/2020 15:29

Why would a straight woman get married to a gay man and have his children? It makes no sense. More bollocks from someone who knows nothing I say!

Floribundance · 07/02/2020 15:31

I married my ex and stayed with him for over 15 years knowing that he was a wanker. Who knows what goes on in other people’s relationships.

JuanSheetIsPlenty · 07/02/2020 15:33

Steph? Is that you?

BaolFan · 07/02/2020 15:34

I don't think the 90s were this haven of gay acceptance that a lot of posters on here seem to think they were.

They weren't. I marched at Pride in the 90s to support a newly out lesbian friend of mine. The abuse we got was appalling.

I also campaigned for the repeal of S.28 - which didn't take place until 2000 in Scotland and 2003 in the rest of the UK.

People have short memories.

Silversurfie · 07/02/2020 15:35

There are plenty of closeted gay men who have married their managers. People get married for all sorts of reasons.....

karencantobe · 07/02/2020 15:37

I agree people have short memories.
It reminds me of people my age who are shocked when shown the open racism on TV shows in the 70's and 80's. They had simply forgotten the reality of how it used to be.

Things have changed very quickly.

Gr3yCl3y · 07/02/2020 15:38

There is still a huge amount of prejudice going by what my ds has experienced and those at his youth group even from their own families. Quite shocking. Goodness knows what it was like in the 80s.

I don’t get the PS hating. It’s tough coming to terms with being gay. His wife is supporting him as his family. The MN Lynch mob don’t know the details however much they say they do. His family do which speaks volumes.

Fredastaireatemyjamsandwich · 07/02/2020 15:38

I'm proud of myself - I listen to people being brave and think - 'I must be brave'. Worked with him a few years ago. He was totally self absorbed then....

userxx · 07/02/2020 15:39

@Floribundance :) That really made me laugh!! Totally agree with you by the way.

FabbyChix · 07/02/2020 15:40

Why poor wife and kids you’d think it was a choice. I doubt he chose this path give the man a break. What a brave man with a wonderful supporting family

karencantobe · 07/02/2020 15:41

Whether he has being unfair to his wife, none of us actually know.

I agree for kids a parent coming out as gay is a big deal.

kenandbarbie · 07/02/2020 15:42

I hope this is true. If it is I can like him again.

JuanSheetIsPlenty · 07/02/2020 15:42

Very interesting interview dowser!

Haworthia · 07/02/2020 15:44

Totally plausible. I can think of two other high profile men beset with gay rumours who married women on their management teams. I’ve never understood what’s in it for the women, but hey ho.

JuanSheetIsPlenty · 07/02/2020 15:45

I hope this is true.

If it is I hope she’s made a clean fortune out of it. Sacrificing her own chance at a lifetime of proper love to make his career is worth £££££.

sam221 · 07/02/2020 15:47

Ok so I must be late to the news, but truthfully I couldn't tell if someone is gay or not. So surprised reading here that people could tell?! I also didn't know Ricky Martin was gay and had no idea, until he came out!
I do feel for his wife, surely over the last 10 years he could have come out?
I appreciate homophobia was bad even the early 00s but I think over the decade things have got better, so he would have been supported.

Bluntness100 · 07/02/2020 15:49

If his wife knew, and he is not intending on divorcing or having a relationship with a man, then what is the need to tell the world? There is none. So something has prompted this, either the story was about to break and he's taken control of the narrative, or the story was about to break and he's taken control of the narrative.

I'm guessing there will be a story about a man he's involved with soon enough.
