Blimey. Married for 27 years.

I know someone who is in his late 50's who has only just come out to everyone , he didn't really come out to his self until he was 38 and as a result hasn't had a relationship , its so very sad . He even told me he was ashamed of who he was

Hopefully this will give strength to others who may not have had it
Yes its not good for his wife and kids ( we would guess? ) But can probably lay a lot of the blame of society and the vitriol of people on line

Yes the 80's were not an easy to time to be out and gay. It was till legal to discriminate against people, fire them from jobs for being gay.

JuanSheetIsPlenty · 07/02/2020 13:52

So what exactly I’d the purpose of the public declaration?

Presumably because he wants to have sex with men and doesn’t want endless leaked stories to the press about it.

I would say he’s already been having sex with men and someone is about to leak or threatening to leak a story.

Sorry I haven't RTFT someone might have already said but a bit convenient to bring this all out just at the minute he's disliked. A possible career saving move to sway public opinion back in his favour.

That aside he is very brave to come out, I can imagine it is difficult but I feel more for his wife and children tbh.

karencantobe · 07/02/2020 13:54

Also although I do not think he is brave, virtually every single person in the public eye talks about their private life. So they mention their husband or wife, or talk about how they are getting married, or mention their kids.

illandBored · 07/02/2020 13:54

Does Holly really sit in a hot tub with Schofield ?! Or was that Tongue in cheek by Eamon?!! Confused

YogaLite · 07/02/2020 13:55

So glad I am not the only one who thinks him brave, more a publicity seeker, the wanted to be SEEN "strong", what a lot of BS!
The strong one is his wife for putting up with it. I know from personal experience what happens behind closed doors in the circumstances.
So so wrong to give all the support to someone who lied most of his adult life, they don't deserve praise nor publicity.

Rainbowb · 07/02/2020 13:55

Can’t say I give a toss tbh!! Thought it was all very cringy, a simple statement in social media/to the press would have sufficed. Still, I suppose it’s upped the viewing figures for that god awful programme!

karencantobe · 07/02/2020 13:56

I agree he was about to be outed by the papers. This is why George Michael came out publicly.

It doesn't surprise me, I always thought he was a bit camp.

Iamthewombat · 07/02/2020 13:57

Yes the 80's were not an easy to time to be out and gay.

I don’t want to rain on your parade, but come back in time with me to 1984. Of the five biggest mainstream British music acts, three were fronted by openly gay men and a fourth was fronted by a man who would come out as gay in the 1990s. Was it so unacceptable?

It was till legal to discriminate against people, fire them from jobs for being gay.

You couldn’t fire people for being gay in the 1980s.

Lennon80 · 07/02/2020 13:59

Married her at 31 - what a bastard! But yeah he’s so fucking brave.

karencantobe · 07/02/2020 13:59

Yes you could fire people for being gay in the 80s. I know people who lost their jobs for this. It was perfectly legal.

Iamthewombat · 07/02/2020 13:59

If interested, I’m talking about Freddie Mercury, Boy George, Holly Johnson and George Michael, with Simon le Bon flying the straight flag.

Dowser · 07/02/2020 14:00

When my non gay ex husband cheated on me with several other women.throughout our marriage ..I wondered if he’d ever actually loved me and was our marriage and supposedly happy family a total sham.
Horrible, horrible time.

I suspect he’s had the talk with her a while back...and as someone else said maybe he has his eye on someone or something is about to revealed about him...so he got in first

Just seems odd. A message on his Instagram on would have sufficed..with a brief statement when it was his and hollys day

Involving ruth and eamonn over it was just weird and made it a much bigger event that in all honesty it needed to be .

A brief statement along the lines of
On Friday as you may have seen, I’ve come out as gay . This is a private matter between me and my family who are being really supportive.
Please respect our privacy at this difficult time.

And now business as usual ..over to you Holly.

Why all the drama and cringefest. So over the top , so I necessary and so all about him.

Just weird. No one else’s business but him and his wife and family

The80sweregreat · 07/02/2020 14:00

Making me think now who he ( allegedly) is with? IF anyone?? Do you think they were threatening him ? Blackmail?
There could be more to come out ?
If his taken out injunctions then he might be ok if anyone is trying to get money or whatever. Must be a horrible life living a lie for so long. I still feel for his wife and family though. Must have been hard for everyone.

Iamthewombat · 07/02/2020 14:00

Tell us who was fired, legally, for being gay in the 1980s. Are you talking about service personnel?

karencantobe · 07/02/2020 14:01

Musicians are always allowed to push the boundaries more than others. And 4 groups with openly gay pop stars across a whole decade is not a lot.

GFJoe · 07/02/2020 14:01

but it is possible to behave with respect to others and get on with your life quietly. He obviously doesn't want to do that!

Maybe it's worth it to him for the woke points. Amazing how, as usual, on twitter, the real (female) victim in all of this gets ignored.

ZenNudist · 07/02/2020 14:02

I agree he should have come out years ago but its quite likely his wife knew about it amd was happy to go along with it as he is loaded.

I feel sorry for their dds.

karencantobe · 07/02/2020 14:03

@Iamthewombat yes service personnel, and several friends in other types of jobs including teachers. Were you around then as someone openly gay? Because you do not seem to know the first thing about it.

Also people harassed out of jobs for being gay. Also denied access to services such as hotel rooms. And plenty of lesbians lost their kids in the courts.

MurrayTheMonk · 07/02/2020 14:04

Im actually really surprised so I'm obvs not very observant if it's been as obvious as everyone here seems to think Grin
Why were they on TM this morning then? Just for this? Don't Ruth and Eamonn do it on a Friday? Or was it a special interview with holly, because Eamonn clearly hates Phils guts?

He always spoke so nicely about his wife-what a sad situation.
