If you were staying at someones house at this time of year, what tog duvet would you expect?

We are all warm bods in my house so the duvets we have are all around 2.5 tog.

We haven't had anyone stay for years but have people this weekend. I was sure I had a 7 tog king put a way somewhere but can only find that in a single. My spare king is 2.5.

That's too cool for other folk isn't it? I also have a blanket and it's quite a thick duvet cover.

I was just going to pick up a cheapy one but seem to have the choice of 10.5, 13.5 or 4.5?

Would 4.5 be too cool as well? We will never use a 10.5 or 13.5. Confused

13.5 at this time of year

whimbrel · 06/02/2020 14:14

Just offer additional blankets and a hot water bottle?

dementedpixie · 06/02/2020 14:15

4.5tog is what we use in summer, we have 10.5tog at the moment

10.5 but I also have throws folded at the end of each bed.

ShirleyPhallus · 06/02/2020 14:15

I have one duvet that I use all year round.....

Ninkanink · 06/02/2020 14:16

4.5 would be okay for someone like me who doesn’t like it too hot at night - that’s what I’m using now. If that’s not enough then you can put both duvets into the duvet cover or have one on top of the other.

ManiacalLapwing · 06/02/2020 14:17

We have 7 in winter, 4.5 in summer. Heating off overnight (normally 17 degrees until 9pm) but the house is well insulated and doesn't drop below 10 degrees.

ManiacalLapwing · 06/02/2020 14:18

I'm quite underweight and 4.5 with a blanket would be fine for me though.

Mintjulia · 06/02/2020 14:19

13.5 in winter.

Do you keep the heating on all night?

WaxOnFeckOff · 06/02/2020 14:19

Yes, I suppose I could get the 4.5 and add it to the 2.5 - good thinking.

It's a newish build (2001) house and we do heat it but not during the night. DH and I and teen DSs are probably over warm even with the 2.5.

Weather is quite mild but it's to be windy and stormy over the weekend I think.

13.5 this time of year. Could probably manage with a 10.5.

WaxOnFeckOff · 06/02/2020 14:23

I'm in Scotland and even when it's cold and frosty out, none of us get cold. Duvet covers are the same as the ones DH and I use which are Dip and Doze and it doesn't give the thread count, but they are pretty substantial.

WaxOnFeckOff · 06/02/2020 14:25

Hmm, maybe i should get a 10.5 but it would really just be kept for visitors and just be clutter for most of the time. It's not cost as it would need to be a last minute thing so a cheapy from argos and cost differences between the thicknesses is negligible

I didn't even know they went that low...

We use 10.5 year round, with a fleecy throw on top in winter.

KittenVsBox · 06/02/2020 14:26

We are still on 4.5, but I think most people would have thicker.

I think the idea of getting the 4.5, and pairing it up with the existing 2.5 is probably best. Plus maybe some blankets incase your visitors are the 13 tog people.

Redglitter · 06/02/2020 14:26

10 tog would kill me. I've got a 1 tog all year round. Occasionally I'll throw on a blanket

dementedpixie · 06/02/2020 14:26

I'm in Scotland using 10.5tog. Ds still has his 4.5tog

inwood · 06/02/2020 14:29

I think mine is 13.5. I wouldn't buy a new one but fielder extra blankets if you have guests.

Mintjulia · 06/02/2020 14:30

It was -5 here last night. Not so mild, and it’s expected to snow on Monday.

WaxOnFeckOff · 06/02/2020 14:32

yes, I'm thinking the 4.5 plus the existing 2.5 and the fleecy blanket. I could put the feathery single in a cover and use it as a throw across the bottom and they can use it as required - really not sure they'll need it.

Or alternatively I could leave the heating on low overnight and just turn off the radiators in our rooms and they can do what they like with theirs?

No idea how many TOGS our duvet is but we use the same all year round .
Have a fur throw and blankets but never needed to use other than for decorative purposes .

ExpletiveDelighted · 06/02/2020 14:34

9-10 tog ideally but 4.5 tog plus a blanket would be fine, no heating overnight. Ours are supposed to popper together to make 13.5 tog but we have never used it that way, would be way too hot.

missmouse101 · 06/02/2020 14:35

10.5

NannyR · 06/02/2020 14:36

I would go for a 4.5 or 7 tog plus a couple of blankets then your guest can sort out what suits them best, depending on the temp of the room and how warm/cold they naturally feel. Personally, I would be extremely uncomfortably hot with a 13.5 tog quilt in a warm (17+degrees) room.

tilligan · 06/02/2020 14:36

Difficult one to call....I hate being too cold or too hot equally when I am away from home! The idea of adding two thinner ones together plus a throw would cover all bases.
