If you were staying at someones house at this time of year, what tog duvet would you expect?

We are all warm bods in my house so the duvets we have are all around 2.5 tog.

We haven't had anyone stay for years but have people this weekend. I was sure I had a 7 tog king put a way somewhere but can only find that in a single. My spare king is 2.5.

That's too cool for other folk isn't it? I also have a blanket and it's quite a thick duvet cover.

I was just going to pick up a cheapy one but seem to have the choice of 10.5, 13.5 or 4.5?

Would 4.5 be too cool as well? We will never use a 10.5 or 13.5. Confused

@BercowsFlyingFlamingo

I sleep naked all year round with my 3 tog duvet, and the window open! I like to feel a little bit cold in bed which I know is a bit weird but I really hate being hot in bed!

CremeEggThief · 06/02/2020 16:53

10.5 at the least! I use it most of the year, but go to 7.5 for the summer.

I didn't even know you could get below 4.5!

WaxOnFeckOff · 06/02/2020 16:55

We have all the windows on the latch all year round but I honestly do like to be warm and I'm not cold in the house or in bed.

DH and I sleep naked in our 2.5, no heating overnight, windows on the latch and live in Scotland. Boys wear PJs when they come downstairs but I'm not sure what they actually wear in bed.

I've gone with the 4.5 and 2.5 (4.5 new, 2.5 laundered but used) in together - feels a nice weight and is very floofy. I've put the fleecy blanket across the bottom so that it can be pulled up if required and I've popped the single (made up in a cover) and a couple of single blankets into the wardrobe.

Looks too warm for me but I can quiz them when they arrive if they'd prefer cooler or hotter.

Thanks all for your help. Just goes to show the massive disparities in how warm we sleep :)

We had a frost last night & live in a draughty old house.

13.5 tog in winter, 4.5 in summer.

BercowsFlyingFlamingo · 06/02/2020 16:58

UntamedWisteria · 06/02/2020 16:59

However our guest room has 10.5 tog all year round, regardless of weather. It is above the kitchen so it's pretty warm.

ReginaGeorgeous · 06/02/2020 17:01

I have 10.5 tog in the winter and 4.5 in the summer. I live in a toasty new build but am a cold blooded creature.

WaxOnFeckOff · 06/02/2020 17:03

DH and I fell out massively one summer holiday when there was just the two of us. I am too warm apparently...

We were in a shitty hotel in Malta during a heat wave, no AC and he wouldn't have the window open for mosquitoes so we were both grumpy anyway. I got sent to the far end of the bed for being like a furnace - we are still together 25 years later but i still get gently encouraged to move away.... :o

DH and I are toasty warm in winter and reasonably cool in summer under our beautifully light 4.5 tog goose down duvet.
Sometimes in extremely cold weather we leave the heating on all night but invariably get too hot.
Could you not stick with the duvet you've got and heat the guest bedroom for the night(s)?

RedWine123 · 06/02/2020 17:07

4.5 and a couple of blankets

TowerRingInferno · 06/02/2020 17:29

We have 13.5 tog in winter (v old and cold house)
9 in autumn and spring
4.5 in summer

I’d expect 13.5 in a cold house and about 10 in a warm new build, possibly even less.

FabbyChix · 06/02/2020 17:32

13.5 all year

FabbyChix · 06/02/2020 17:33

I also only use down duvets I have polyester

FabbyChix · 06/02/2020 17:33

That’s hate polyester

evilharpy · 06/02/2020 17:36

Ours is 13.5. I don’t think we changed it for a lighter one last summer apart from a few very hot nights when we just used a light blanket instead.

I’m incredibly cold blooded. If I had a 4.5 tog duvet I’d spent the whole night shivering and would have to pile a load of coats or something on top.

KittenVsBox · 06/02/2020 17:44

I'm a 4.5 tog from above.
Window vents open all year. On the latch for about 9 months.
Heating goes off about 8pm, and comes back on at 6.15am, if required by the thermostat.
I sleep in a teeshirt. DH in boxers.

BarbaraofSeville · 06/02/2020 17:46

Do all the 2.5 and 4 tog posters sleep in great fluffy onesies or next to a great hulking hot water bottle of a partner

Ha ha, no I start off in a t-shirt and socks but almost always take them off as I'm too hot.

DP does fit the profile of a 'great hulking hot water bottle of a partner' but I don't think it makes a difference whether he is there or not, I'm just as warm when he's working nights or away. He's never cold either, thankfully.

Ninkanink · 06/02/2020 17:53

No, I usually sleep nude. Sometimes on a cold night I’ll wear a tee shirt or pyjama top, and on very cold nights I’ll wear full pyjamas.

We also have one bedroom window open pretty much all the time, we only ever close it if it’s stormy or extremely cold. We never heat our bedroom either. We just both prefer a cooler bedroom and plenty of fresh air.

Pipandmum · 06/02/2020 18:00

4.5 year round, though in hit summer nights just the duvet cover without the duvet. I don't normally have the heat on upstairs. However if my sister comes to visit she wants the heat on and the thickest duvet and will probably wear socks to bed too!

thenightsky · 06/02/2020 18:07

We have 16.5 tog for winter and 7.5 tog for summer. We both feel the cold.

BercowsFlyingFlamingo · 06/02/2020 18:08

My mum thinks I'm mad because my pjs consist of a vest and cropped bottoms and I have a 10.5 tog and the window open. The heating goes off at 8pm. She's got a bit nesh in her golden years though. I don't like being too warm in bed. If I had a partner I might want a lighter duvet. Ds snuggles with me and he's always lovely and warm but he doesn't give out as much heat as a man. Dd is always cold and sleeps in a fluffy onesie and has blankets over her duvet. I'm thinking of getting her an electric blanket to stop her moaning. It has been a bit nippy lately. Sometimes I had to wear a coat! My friend from London has about 5 layers on including a calf length coat, hat gloves and I'm there in a vest and hoodie and hat. Anyone would think our more northern weather is bad!

Nacreous · 06/02/2020 19:58

I usually use a 4.5 late spring to early autumn and 10.5 in winter.

The guest bed has a 4.5 with a heavy cotton bedspread, a thick fleece blanket and an alpaca blanket though, because the bed is right near the radiator and the room has the boiler in, so I figure that way people can adjust to their preference. If it was reeeeallly cold I would up it to the spare 10.

Your solution sounds very sensible to me Op.

thegcatsmother · 06/02/2020 20:27

All the beds here have 9.0 on at present, and I have 4.5 to add should it get colder, as I buy all seasons duvets. I also have fleece blankets, throws and 5 pairs of cashmere bedsocks as I get really cold (the socks are worn in rotation, not all at once).
