If you were staying at someones house at this time of year, what tog duvet would you expect?

We are all warm bods in my house so the duvets we have are all around 2.5 tog.

We haven't had anyone stay for years but have people this weekend. I was sure I had a 7 tog king put a way somewhere but can only find that in a single. My spare king is 2.5.

That's too cool for other folk isn't it? I also have a blanket and it's quite a thick duvet cover.

I was just going to pick up a cheapy one but seem to have the choice of 10.5, 13.5 or 4.5?

Would 4.5 be too cool as well? We will never use a 10.5 or 13.5. Confused

I have one duvet. In the heat of the summer I sleep with only a sheet. In the cold of the winter I have my duvet plus a blanket. And my electric blanket of course! I really wouldn’t buy a duvet. Just provide an extra blanket or two and a hot water bottle!

kaldefotter · 06/02/2020 14:39

At least a 9 tog plus blankets made available in easy reach. Currently, I've got a 9 tog and a 4.5 tog clipped together.

Definitely not a 4.5 tog for your guests in the winter; that's a summer weight duvet.

CakeandCoffeeQueen · 06/02/2020 14:40

I think putting them together is best, and the sidle at the bottom of the bed and an extra blanket. You could always ask if they want a hot water bottle or the heating on as well.
I get really hot am sleeping with a cellular blanket and a fleece on my feet at the moment.

10.5 tog with a blanket available too.

Girlonatubetrain2 · 06/02/2020 14:43

Using a 13.5 currently (& fluffy PJs)

WaxOnFeckOff · 06/02/2020 14:44

If I could see a 7 available for pick up today or tomorrow i would do that, but the choice seems to be 4.5 or 10.5 or 13.5. I only have 1 big enough blanket/throw as we don't really use them either.

Hmmm. Maybe I should have another rake around in case I have something lurking that I could pop though the washing machine toady otherwise I need to go and buy something.

We have stayed at their house and other people and always get a thick duvet everywhere even in summer but just presumed that was what they had spare so either took it out and just slept with the cover (we normally don't wear PJs but do when we are staying with someone else) or spent the night alternately throwing it off and back on again :)

I use a summer one year round
But would likely expect a standard 13 ish tog, as its the normal duvet imho

Batqueen · 06/02/2020 14:49

I just offer the same one all year round with a massive pile of blankets of various thickness and pillows so people can pick to their taste!

BlackAmericanoNoSugar · 06/02/2020 14:50

I'm a warm person but it can get very cold in my bedroom. I use a 4.5 tog silk duvet and have a fluffy silk blanket that adds a lot of warmth but can easily be pushed to the side. I think it wouldn't hurt to put the duvet that you have on the bed and leave a little stack of extra single duvets/single blankets so that they can layer up if they want to.

BarbaraofSeville · 06/02/2020 14:52

We have a 4.5 all year round, except in high summer when we sleep under an empty duvet cover.

The 4.5 is too warm apart from the depths of winter. We did have a 2.5 ish one but we've lost it(!) so maybe it's run off with your spare.

If you can't find anything other than the 2.5, I'd give them that, plus the blanket, and suggest they sleep in pyjamas and offer to keep the heating on low overnight. I wouldn't bother with new duvets as a one off as they might not be needed anyway and you say it won't get used again.

The variation as to what people like is interesting. Might explain why hotels and holiday accomodation seems to go for 10-13 togs, which I can't sleep under at all, even with all the windows open.

GameSetMatch · 06/02/2020 14:54

I get so hot in bed I have a 4.5 in winter, you can always put a blanket on a bed but hard to cool a hot duvet down.

meelamo · 06/02/2020 14:54

I have a 10.5 for all year round. Fine in winter but usually too hot in the worst of summer.

DesLynamsMoustache · 06/02/2020 14:56

We use a summer one all year round too. I would be absolutely baking with a 13.5 tog and I'm in the north of Scotland! Just stick a blanket or throw on top as another layer, but if you have a decently heated house and don't live in the North Pole it'll be fine.

IvinghoeBeacon · 06/02/2020 14:56

I have no idea what tog my own duvet is, let alone the spare one, and I don’t change it by season except for removing it altogether and just using the cover in a heatwave. If they’re giving you what you consider to be a thick one even in summer then probably they don’t really think about it either. Given the range of responses here I think you’re better off going for lower tog plus plenty of blankets so that they can choose what they need.

PorpentinaScamander · 06/02/2020 14:57

I wouldn't have a clue. I use the same duvet all year round and have no idea what tog it is. I'd be happy with any duvet as long as there were extra blankets in case I got cold.

Jaxhog · 06/02/2020 14:57

It depends on how warm your house is. I'd assume the same as you have on your bed.

MillicentMartha · 06/02/2020 14:59

I use a 9 tog that was the heavier part of a 4 seasons quilt in the spring, autumn and winter. They seem to be hard to buy on their own, though.

teenagetantrums · 06/02/2020 15:04

I'm always hot so wouldn't care what tog. If you have blankets or throws to put on top that would be fine. Presumably you know them well as staying with you so just ask them. Or if they driving ask them to bring Thier own duvet l wouldn't mind if it was me.

Pollaidh · 06/02/2020 15:04

In our cold bedroom, 13 tog at the moment, or 4.5 tog and a blanket.

WaxOnFeckOff · 06/02/2020 15:07

Found a 4.5 king still in the packaging so going to go with that combined with the 2.5 and the blanket and will leave smaller blankets and the warmer single in the cupboard and let them know they are there. We only have a 2.5 as do both DSs and everyone is perfectly happy if not too warm at times.

2 duvets ,one 13.5 and one 10
Bedspread and throw
But we turn heating off at night.

Funguy · 06/02/2020 15:25

Can you not ask them? I hate the heating on at night and sleep with a window open with a nice warm duvet.
If not, just put some extra blankets in the room and they can help themselves.

KirstyJC · 06/02/2020 15:29

We have a 7 on now but will change back to the 4.5 soon. Kids in 4.5 all year and one is still too hot even with the windows open overnight!

Csn I ask where you got the 2.5 from as I have been looking but can't find any unless they are silk (too expensive) or feathers (triggers allergies). Would be fab to have a lighter one!

goingoverground · 06/02/2020 15:39

How warm is your house at night? I set my thermostat to come on at night if it drops below 16 C at night when my elderly DM is staying because she feels the cold. It has never actually come on though, even when there is snow, the house retains the warmth from daytime.
