If you were staying at someones house at this time of year, what tog duvet would you expect?

We are all warm bods in my house so the duvets we have are all around 2.5 tog.

We haven't had anyone stay for years but have people this weekend. I was sure I had a 7 tog king put a way somewhere but can only find that in a single. My spare king is 2.5.

That's too cool for other folk isn't it? I also have a blanket and it's quite a thick duvet cover.

I was just going to pick up a cheapy one but seem to have the choice of 10.5, 13.5 or 4.5?

Would 4.5 be too cool as well? We will never use a 10.5 or 13.5. Confused

This thread makes no sense since it clearly all depends on the temperature of your house. If the OP is in scotland and every one is using 2.5 tog duvets and walking around in shorts and Tshirts then she clearly has her central heating whacked up high for long periods of time.

But she's also stated she's walking around outside in nothing but a thin rain coat while myself and others are bundled up in 4 layers, a thick coat, hat and scarf and still feeling cold. Her DC are wearing shorts outside so I don't think the fact they are warm inside is a good bar to set to other people's standards

Witchend · 07/02/2020 07:32

It does also depend on the person.
I am cold at night. I currently have 2 duvets over me. One 13.5 and one 4.5. Some nights I have a 7 on top. Occasionally I have a blanket too.
Dh is next to me with the 7 tog on.

But during the day I'm different. At tennis I'm known for turning up in a skirt and t shirt when there's frost on the ground.

I hate duvets as I always get too hot. A light duvet plus blankets would be better than a heavy duvet.

I’m a cold bod, need to be warm at night. Used to have a 13.5 tog duvet, but now only a 10 I think. In winter I have a fake fur blanket to put over the top. I also will wear my thick fluffy bed jumper or dressing gown if it is really cold. Windows are firmly shut. It’s also a rare day if I don’t wear my bed socks!

In the summer I won’t need the blanket or dressing gown, and if a heatwave then the window may be opened and the duvet kicked off once in a while.

Our house is a modern one and in winter the thermostat is set at about 20-22, but heating is turned off at night. I still need to wear many layers during the day and have a blanket over me in the evening. It is a running joke with the family how you can tell how warm I am by checking how cold my nose gets Blush. I am going through the menopause and have had pretty much every symptom apart from hot flushes and night sweats. I guess I am always destined to be cold. Ironically if I do ever get warm, I get overheated very quickly and can faint.

DH is the complete opposite. We have to sleep in separate rooms otherwise he would die, as he is a thin duvet and window open person. He hates hotel rooms, whereas I love them.

ACautionaryTale · 07/02/2020 20:59

ok, I genuinely don't feel the cold. I only have light leather jackets. I do own a thick winter coat - don't think I've actually worn it in about three years.

most of the time, I don't even bother with a jacket.

Heating tends to get set at no more than 19 in the day. turned off at night and no heating in the bedroom.

Sleep with the windows open all year around - doesn't matter if its -10 or +10. Live in the SW and at the moment, I'm often sleeping on top of the bed with no covers at all!

2.5 tog at most even in the winter.

No need to be competitive, just I run HOT.

I'd happily relocate to the arctic circle but would be dragged kicking and screaming to the tropics. Only time I like temps above 20 is when there is a pool and a swim up bar involved,

woodencoffeetable · 07/02/2020 21:05

a thinish, multi purpose duvet that's washable.
extra blankets and hot waterbottle if person feels the cold

No.not necessarily. I.have a 1 tog duvet on all year round. I sometimes add a blanket but generally it's just the duvet. My heating isnt on every day and if it is on.its generally just for an hour or so. I rarely wear a jacket. I just dont (as a rule) feel the cold.

karencantobe · 08/02/2020 01:18

OP says none of her family wear proper coats during the winter. It gets bloody cold in Scotland, so her family are pretty unusual.

Redglitter · 08/02/2020 02:05

I'm in Scotland too - coatless 🤭

Rosehip345 · 08/02/2020 02:10

Any old one, maybe some blankets if it’s chilly.

HoldMyLobster · 08/02/2020 15:38

We went through this decision making process last night. DS had two friends over, it was -12 outside and we had an ice storm and raging winds, we were fully expecting to lose power and rely on the woodstove for heat. We ended up dragging out every duvet and blanket we had just in case.

Never did lose power after all that Grin

TildaKauskumholm · 08/02/2020 15:44

I would burst into flames with a 13.5 tog. For guests you really need to give them a choice, maybe a thin or medium quilt and a blanket or two. We sometimes stay at my ILs house where the only option is 13.5 quilt or nothing. I have asked for a blanket but they have none. I take my own now, and feel very unwelcome.

SuperMeerkat · 08/02/2020 15:47

Until I joined MN I never realised people actually had winter and summer duvets. The mind boggles 😂🤯

marble11 · 08/02/2020 15:53

Am I the only one with a 15 tog duvet 😂

Baaaahhhhh · 08/02/2020 15:55

I have a 12 tog - can't get them anymore, but this is perfect for me. No heating at night, and I leave the window slightly open, but sleep without pj's, so never over hot. I do use it all year round though. The temp has to get over 28 for me to take it out of the cover.

thenightsky · 08/02/2020 16:14

@marble11 You are not alone. Mine is at least 15 tog - I go down to a 9 for summer. I feel the cold.

CurlyMango · 08/02/2020 20:03

9-10 tog

kenandbarbie · 08/02/2020 20:25

I only have one duvet on each bed all year, with a variety of togs!

HoldMyLobster · 09/02/2020 04:04

-18C here tonight. On the FB Maine hiking group there's a guy sleeping outside tonight in a hammock tent. I feel a bit weeny now under my goose down duvet with flannel cover...
