Uber driver thinks my DD has coronavirus

Got an Uber his evening with 4 year old DD. Shes been under the weather for 2 days now. It's not so bad that I'll keep her home, but I have kept her away from any other children. She has a cough and a runny nose. No temperature, diarrhoea or vomiting.

Even I'm a bit poorly. But it feels like the common cold.

Should I call 111?

I don't think she has it, and there have been no confirmed cases in London (where we live). Getting slightly worried after the Uber drivers comment suggesting I take DD to hospital for coughing in his car.

The calls to 111 with people thinking they have Coronavirus, is stopping people getting through who need an appointment and seen by or talked to a medical professional. Unless you've come in from China, or have family who have, your kid has a cold. Is it a bad cold? No? Then please dont overwhelm an already overwhelmed service with more ignorance.

The Chinese shop owner in our local shop is wearing a medical face mask.

As though the Glaswegians who have never been to China who shop in his shop may somehow give him the virus. Aye right mate.

Honestly, people are needing to get a grip on reality. There’s more chance of regular flu than that particular strain. Especially in a country half way round the world away from wuhan.

MorelloKisses · 01/02/2020 22:54

Mask wearing in East Asia is a complex mix of social conformity/respect. I doubt the shop owner in Glasgow is panicking, not just following cultural conventions.

Why are you entertaining this silly man's ideas?
It's winter people get coughs and cold all the time. I've just had a cough that required antibiotics and steroids and even I didn't consider I had coronavirus.
You should have laughed in the numpties face not indulged his idiocy.

gamerwidow · 01/02/2020 22:59

Sadly a lot of people are eyeing all people of Chinese descent with suspicion, he is probably scared people won't come into to his shop if he doesn't wear it.

gamerwidow · 01/02/2020 23:01

I know it’s slightly off topic but I don’t understand the focus on children.

Children have less developed immune systems and are more vulnerable to infection.
They like the elderly and those with LTC are most vulnerable to severe complications.

@LilQueenie ”its being recommended to wash hands with soap and water or use an alcohol based hand sanitiser gel. They are doing everything right. So not thick or stupid.”

Nobody is saying those things are thick or stupid. Antibacterials and alcohol based hand sanitizer are not synonymous.

How2Help · 01/02/2020 23:21

Dettol antibacterial spray does list some viruses that it will also kill in addition to being an antibactetial, but they have issued a statement to clarify they canNOT claim it kills this strain of the corona virus. It is most likely that it will but there is no evidence for this and no public health advice is going to rely on guesswork.

Wrong interpretation of a nice cultural custom? It has always been my impression that chinese and japanese people wear a mask not to pass on a cold to the people around them.

This. It's polite and thoughtful.

LilQueenie · 01/02/2020 23:37

How2Help people were being called stupid in a post for using antibac on a virus. Most antibacs are alcohol based which is why they are still useful and do work on a virus due to viruses being broken down by the alcohol itself.

Im aware dettol does not kill this current strain as I'm sick of seeing it circulate facebook saying it does.

eaglejulesk · 01/02/2020 23:50

The world has gone mad. It's like people's brains are leaking everywhere.

At the moment, while there is no proof that Dettol kills this strain, neither is there any proof that it doesn't -simply because it's not yet been tested.

Given that it does kill other viruses of the same type, it's more than probable that this one too is killed, but until it's been tested (which obviously requires live samples) no one can say it either does or does not.

madcatladyforever · 01/02/2020 23:52

My chinese daughter in law says everyone is crossing the road to avoid her. She's never even been to China Grin

newbingepisodes · 02/02/2020 00:01

I work in public health and health protection - love the hysterics over this.
2 people in the U.K. are being treated for the virus in isolation.
Also, because it never makes the headlines - every year about 10% of people who catch regular flu will get pneumonia and many of those will die. But we never hear about them!
This is no different - wash your hands, practice good hygiene and stop being hysterical.
Unless you are severely immunocompromised, pregnant, elderly you will fight viruses all the time without often even knowing you've had one.

ErrolTheDragon · 02/02/2020 00:05

I wonder if increased awareness of basic measure to avoid spreading and acquiring infections might result in lower numbers with influenza and other bugs?

How2Help · 02/02/2020 00:13

Errol: having flown through 4 international airports this week I can say I doubt it. I went to wash my hands before eating and there were the usual numbers of people walking out of the loos without washing their hands, loads of coughers/sneezers not covering their mouths etc. Situation normal!

LilQueenie · 02/02/2020 00:14

ErrolTheDragon i suspect this may be the case with any luck. however some sill don't get it. currently dp has been coughing for 2 weeks, throwing up, nosebleeds due to the way he wipes his nose and complaining he would be better off dead. Hmm Im inclined to agree after his behaviour. Sneezing into his hand and refusing to wash it. Leaving used tissues everywhere and using the bed spread a shield for his coughing. Both dd and I had the start of being unwell but we sorted it before it took hold. He is the bloody reason people get sick because they refuse to do basic hygiene. Meanwhile I've been cleaning all the surfaces he touches. Angry

ALongHardWinter · 02/02/2020 01:57

Your Uber driver said he thinks your Dd has the coronavirus? Was he a doctor? Confused

1forAll74 · 02/02/2020 02:35

Would the driver be saying the same thing, if he had picked you up from getting a meal, at your local Chinese takeaway place.?

MrsPlesWearsAFez · 02/02/2020 03:04

Next time just assure the driver that he is being ridiculous, and your dd doesn't ecen like Corona Crown Smile

MrsPlesWearsAFez · 02/02/2020 03:04

*even

It’s you making the assumptions there. He probably has a cold and doesn’t want to infect others.

RainbowMum11 · 02/02/2020 03:42

Oh ffs, it's winter, in the UK - coughs & colds routinely do the rounds.
Coronavirus actually includes the common cold virus and has a much lower mortality rate than influenza by a massive factor.
It really isn't anything to be worried about unless you are immunosuppressed, in which case flu would be more of a risk.
