Uber driver thinks my DD has coronavirus

Dowehaveit · 01/02/2020 19:24

Got an Uber his evening with 4 year old DD. Shes been under the weather for 2 days now. It's not so bad that I'll keep her home, but I have kept her away from any other children. She has a cough and a runny nose. No temperature, diarrhoea or vomiting.

Even I'm a bit poorly. But it feels like the common cold.

Should I call 111?

I don't think she has it, and there have been no confirmed cases in London (where we live). Getting slightly worried after the Uber drivers comment suggesting I take DD to hospital for coughing in his car.

OP posts:

Oh ffs

LilQueenie · 01/02/2020 21:03

unless you have an underlying condition then don't panic. treat as you would any other cold because this is how they treat the new corona one anyway.

BingoLittlesUncle · 01/02/2020 21:06

And that is why sensible people take black cabs.

There are no words, god help our poor NHS

Lordfrontpaw · 01/02/2020 21:20

A friend whose wife is a nurse said that people are coming into the hospital with self diagnosis or - my favourite - ‘we’ve just flown back from holiday and there were Chinese people in the flight, well I’m not certain they were Chinese, but they might have been...’

ym10146 · 01/02/2020 21:22

new business idea

If he did have medical training, imagine the strain it could take off GP's/NHS if you could get medical advice whilst in a cab! Genius.

TSSDNCOP · 01/02/2020 21:25

An Uber driver?

Not a doctor that’s actually gone to medical school?

Calpol, fluids, Peppa Pig and 48 hours.

TheMotherofAllDilemmas · 01/02/2020 21:34

My friend works at York Uni and she says the shops have completely sold out of antibac!!!

Which is really not surprising, they normally don’t have more than 10 bottles in display in small shops.

cousinboneless · 01/02/2020 21:35

Oh ffs. My DD has an extremely loud barking cough. She's had it since the week before Christmas. I've taken her to the GP several times and they say her chest is clear and it will pass. She is absolutely fine other than this cough. Eating, drinking, no high temp etc. Every taxi driver we've had has remarked on her cough. One was insistent that it's whooping cough. It's not. You know your own child, don't buy into the hysteria. The world and his wife are always waiting to pass judgement. Now that the Brits from China are quarantined at the hospital 10 minutes away from our house everyone in my area is going wild about Coronavirus, I expect the taxi driver we have on Monday morning will make a comment. It's just scaremongering. Treat it with the disdain it deserves.

Sn0tnose · 01/02/2020 21:38

How did you not laugh at him? It’s the season for coughs and colds. If he thinks everyone who has the sniffles is a virus carrier, he’s in for a stressful few months.

And never mind him giving you a low rating, how about you give him a low rating for being so absolutely bloody ridiculous?!

PotholeParadise · 01/02/2020 21:39

One of the in-laws once suggested that DH might have meningitis because of his headache when he got some awful bug that turned into a chest infection.

DH asked his GP about this possibility while he was being prescribed antibiotics for the chest-infection, and the GP said that it couldn't be meningitis, otherwise he'd already be dead. Grin

saraclara · 01/02/2020 21:41

I read the title and assumed this was a joke thread. Then read that you were asking whether you should call 111.

Okay, you've back pedalled since, but seriously...?

The world has gone mad. It's like people's brains are leaking everywhere.

TheCanyon · 01/02/2020 21:47

Both my nephews have just been to visit, loaded with the cold and a bad cough with no heads up from db or dsil. But its winter, that's what happens. Taxi drivers have taught me quite a few interesting things over the years but this is taking the piss

MoaningMinniee · 01/02/2020 21:49

Uber driver may well have family who are immunocomprised.... - although it's more likely he's been reading too much Daily Mail.

ShesGotBetteDavisEyes · 01/02/2020 21:51

How many people must get in his cab with coughs/colds? - that dumbo is probably responsible for a large % of people wasting the NHS’s time!

Bodear · 01/02/2020 21:58

OP, why would you only feel responsible if a child caught your dd’s cold but not if an adult did? Why would you think a parent would be annoyed if your dd infected their child but not that an adult would be annoyed if they themselves were infected? I know it’s slightly off topic but I don’t understand the focus on children.

How2Help · 01/02/2020 21:59

My friend works at York Uni and she says the shops have completely sold out of antibac!!!

Has the corona virus mutated into a bacteria?

DecemberSnow · 01/02/2020 22:02

So everyone with a cough / cold / runny nose rings 111....

Imagine....

Get a grip people

If your child is very poorly / weak / not eating or drinking / weeing less / high temperature.... Then yes, ring 111....

But not with a sniffle... FFS

kateandme · 01/02/2020 22:06

this is going to be the biggest drip feed ever if op comes back to say " oh yes i might add my husband just came back from his business trip to china."

wonderrotunda · 01/02/2020 22:09

@ BingoLittlesUncle 👍

Justaboy · 01/02/2020 22:27

8My friend works at York Uni and she says the shops have completely sold out of antibac!!!8

Has the corona virus mutated into a bacteria?

LOL! was just about to mention that!

Didn't any one of the great public ever do any science subjects at school, it does make me wonder sometimes just how thick and stupid most are:(

When it comes to such matters as logic and reasoning..

LilQueenie · 01/02/2020 22:39

its being recommended to wash hands with soap and water or use an alcohol based hand sanitiser gel. They are doing everything right. So not thick or stupid.

Lysianthus · 01/02/2020 22:41

@Lordfrontpaw 🤣🤣🤣

LilQueenie · 01/02/2020 22:42

^Alcohol-based hand sanitisers are not only effective at preventing the transmission of coronavirus, but the transmission of viral infections in general. According to Public Health Canada, they need to have at least 60% alcohol content, which is the case for most over-the counter hand sanitisers.

According to University of Toronto professor James Scott, this percentage is actually even more effective than 100% alcohol because the little bit of water improves the way the alcohol penetrates and kills viruses outer coatings.

Hand sanitiser doesn't replace hand-washing when it comes to actual dirt, but in terms of viral or bacterial illnesses it is an excellent way to prevent the spread of disease.^

oncemorewithfeeling99 · 01/02/2020 22:43

Our whole family has a cold with a cough. It’s absolutely not the coronavirus. People really do panic about the strangest stuff.
