Uber driver thinks my DD has coronavirus

Got an Uber his evening with 4 year old DD. Shes been under the weather for 2 days now. It's not so bad that I'll keep her home, but I have kept her away from any other children. She has a cough and a runny nose. No temperature, diarrhoea or vomiting.

Even I'm a bit poorly. But it feels like the common cold.

Should I call 111?

I don't think she has it, and there have been no confirmed cases in London (where we live). Getting slightly worried after the Uber drivers comment suggesting I take DD to hospital for coughing in his car.

... and yes, expect this kind of behaviour from people, they panic and are nasty when they are scared.

In the last pandemic scare I had to remind my neighbour that the virus is not a genetic disease. She was fully offended that I had brought my child to school even when I had not set a foot in the country were the virus originated in years!

... but then, of course, I could have got it by talking with people from my country... on the phone. Hmm

SchadenfreudePersonified · 01/02/2020 20:14

Do NOT take her to hospital.

Take her home, keep her warm and hydrated and ring 101 if you are worried,

In the HIGHLY UNLIKELY SCENARIO that your DD does have the virus, the last thing you want to do is take her to a place where you sit about in a waiting room with a million other people and infect them, too.

She won't have it, though. He's a stupid wanker - and despite his Uber-diagnosis, I'll bet he hasn't disinfected his car, informed the notifiable diseases people, and then stuck his car in the garage (so he can't work) until the incubation period is over.

She's got some minor childhood bug - I can almost promise you.

Everyone thinks they are a qualified doctor these days . I've had a cough for a few weeks, one colleague has told me that you are supposed to see a doctor if a cough lasts 7 days . Another colleague told me I need antibiotics. I work in a office and no colleagues to my knowledge have had any medical training. I've been to the pharmacist who has just advised medicine apparently they last a while . I haven't got Coronavirus just a mucus cough.

Joke as much as you like Mother - I've seen "Good Omens". If a Demon can get down a telephone signal. . .

Uber-diagnosis

Love this.

Berrymuch · 01/02/2020 20:17

You were right initially more than likely OP, this kind of ridiculous hysteria is what is going to put unsustainable strain on the NHS.

KitKat1985 · 01/02/2020 20:17

Please don't waste NHS resources over this. Your DD has a cold. That's it.

angelikacpickles · 01/02/2020 20:18

Eh, why on earth would you take an Uber driver as an authority on medical matters?

Selfsettling3 · 01/02/2020 20:19

Well sounds like he could be right. The common cold is a corona virus.

UntamedWisteria · 01/02/2020 20:19

To be fair, I have heard some pretty bizarre (& abhorrent) opinions from taxi & bus drivers over the years. I just nod politely, and try not to give any signs that could be interpreted as wanting to encourage them to say more...

coconuttelegraph · 01/02/2020 20:20

Just offended that he thought DD might have the virus just from coughing in his car

I don't think there's any reason to be offended, having any kind of virus is not something negative, why would that offend anyone?

JemimaPuddleCat · 01/02/2020 20:20

I would feel responsible if another child caught her cold. And I'd imagine other parents would be hacked off with me for exposing their child to a cold

Fair enough, though if you're sure it's just a cold and she's well within herself, I wouldn't feel pressured to keep her off nursery/school.

I will point out, though, that there are far more vulnerable groups than children.

MyDcAreMarvel · 01/02/2020 20:21

Do NOT take her to hospital.

It’s really not a police matter.

adaline · 01/02/2020 20:23

He's bonkers.

It's Winter. Most people I know have some kind of cold at the moment. DH and I have been ill for the past month between us - runny noses, headaches, sore throats - neither of us have coronavirus though Grin

SchadenfreudePersonified · 01/02/2020 20:25

ring 101 if you are worried,

Whoops! Sorry about that. Brain fart.

The school crossing lady thinks I have meningoencephalitis and has prescribed me a course of paracetamol and 3days bed rest.

DontTellMeCalmDown · 01/02/2020 20:25

Your Uber driver is a little daft! Nobody likes people coughing around them though, so maybe give her a tissue to cover her mouth when she's coughing.

ErrolTheDragon · 01/02/2020 20:26

Well sounds like he could be right. The common cold is a corona virus.

Most are rhinoviruses, but some are coronaviruses.

IME if you want to maximise your chances of picking up a nasty bug, go to A&E (I got something which was either a particularly nasty cold or mild flu last year when I had to take DH in for a heart problem).

summervines · 01/02/2020 20:28

runny nose -drip feed

PatellarTendonitis · 01/02/2020 20:32

FFS, she's got a cold.

ItalianinLondon · 01/02/2020 20:37

This sooo much reminds me of the Influenza A (how was it called in the UK?). So much hype and panic!

My friend works at York Uni and she says the shops have completely sold out of antibac!!!

Nicknacky · 01/02/2020 20:39

Why would it even cross your mind to call 111? Didn’t it occur to you that it would be daft to worry about Coronavirus and that your kid just had an ordinary winter cold?

Is this level of hysteria only on Mumsnet or has it made its way into real life?

Notcontent · 01/02/2020 20:45

Wow, this must mean that there is an epidemic in London as I saw so many people today coughing, sniffling, etc.

Bee2828 · 01/02/2020 20:46

I am pretty certain she just has a minor cold. It’s just that time of year.

Over the last couple weeks my children have been very poorly sporting very high temps, off food, very lethargic, slight runny noses but it didn’t even cross my mind that it could be coronavirus. They just picked up something from school and there is a lot going around at the minute as there is every year!

Orchardgreen · 01/02/2020 20:48

Oh ffs

negomi90 · 01/02/2020 20:49

Coronavirus is a common virus which is going around all the time in this country. The Wuhan one is just a special strain.
There are currently a lot of children with coronavirus floating around this country and your DD may well have it.
What she doesn't have is the Wuhan one.
