What's it for? We went to look a new kitchens and this hip smasher odd sticky-outy thing was built into one of the hardwood worktops and I can't work out what it's for Confused

Well its obviously a stomach measurer. If your tum is rounder than this, stop baking until you fit again.... simples

Runbikeswim · 17/01/2020 21:13

I think it is to wedge a mixing bowl against. There is a bowl that can be used for a demo looking at the display.

Crap idea though.

viques · 17/01/2020 21:14

I think it's for when you have a lot of people for breakfast so you boil an ostrich egg for everyone to share. Jolly good idea too, I mean have you got an ostrich egg sized eggcup ? Last time I boiled one I had to balance it in a mixing bowl, I thought at the time if only I had a sticking out ostrich egg thingy........

TitsInAbsentia · 17/01/2020 21:18

It can't be for resting a mixing bowl in, people with kitchens like that have kitchen aids for mixing surely?

Qcng · 17/01/2020 21:30

If the problem is your mixing-bowl slipping,
I have easily thought of 100 solutions, that don't involve a hip-jabbing, ovary piercing, toddler head bumping problem. I'm sure most people could.

caoraich · 17/01/2020 21:34

Our old kitchen had one of these on the island unit which had drawers underneath but also space for bar stools.
It had been put in by the previous owners who were very into their scandi design and used it to push the Tripp Trapp high chair up to

geojellyfish · 17/01/2020 21:35

Do you think it is reversible so that when not using the groove for whatever-the-hell-it's-for, you slide out the massive wooden board, turn over and slide in so the jabby bit fits into a purpose-built recess?

ChicCroissant · 17/01/2020 21:51

I doubt I'd use that for mixing, I can't balance my Kenwood Chef on that and no way am I balancing a large Mason Cash bowl on it either!

Does it fold away?

Cheesetrapped · 17/01/2020 21:53

This thread is making me wonder if MN is entirely populated by very tall people. This appendage is being described as a hip basher or a belly holder. My kitchen worktop comes up to just below my boobs.

That kind of makes more sense if it is a mixing bowl holder as I would tend to mix at about chest height anyway.

BreconBeBuggered · 17/01/2020 21:54

It's for slobby middle aged droopy people like myself to rest both the belly and the droopy tits without said wobbly bits getting in the way of the food being prepared to maintain the wobble.

DuckonaBike · 17/01/2020 22:06

Umbrella stand? A sort of minimalist one?

Footle · 17/01/2020 22:09

The artisan Lakeland ovary piercer wins the thread.

MrsEricBana · 17/01/2020 22:10

Chef friend says def to put round bowl and scrape chopped food / waste straight in. Daft.

Loyaultemelie · 17/01/2020 22:11

It's a stop crutches falling over and braining the cat/knocking over cup thingy.

RogueV · 17/01/2020 22:13

Marking place

Runbikeswim · 17/01/2020 22:16

I have extensively googled. Nada.

Smithtylater · 17/01/2020 22:18

It looks painful. If you had little ones you would know you had it....banged heads everyday!

TitsalinaBumSquash · 17/01/2020 22:19

It's there to be top contender on things that I can get my belt loops or pockets caught on, it's battling my kitchen drawer handles. Angry

draughtycatflap · 17/01/2020 22:21

Is it a baking accessory for supporting Paul Hollywood’s sagging balls?

YetAnotherSpartacus · 17/01/2020 22:24

I need to know too!

lunar1 · 17/01/2020 22:26

I hope you are going back tomorrow to check!

WindyMiller1020 · 17/01/2020 22:27

😂 @APatchyTomCat

AmelieTaylor · 17/01/2020 22:28

It must be (as someone else said) a removable bread making board with the gadget to help you hold the bowl because I’ve never noticed it in the showroom and I’m sure I would have (having been there too many times, for far too long!).

People keep talking about hips & legs - on me that would be ribs or boobs (well I say ribs- more like the rolls covering the ribs 🤣).

I suppose, if it WAS the correct height it could help hold a bowl to stop your arm feeling like it’s going to fall off !

I’d like to have the space to store something like that in the kitchen.

Jaxhog · 17/01/2020 22:32

I don't know, but I want one.
