What's it for? We went to look a new kitchens and this hip smasher odd sticky-outy thing was built into one of the hardwood worktops and I can't work out what it's for Confused

Ayton Bespoke Marble?

Mysterian · 18/01/2020 13:07

I'm guessing it's a 'bespoke feature' designed for adding £500 on the price of any kitchen. Either that or a bowl rest so you don't have to trap it against your hip to stir hard.

diddl · 18/01/2020 13:11

"so for me it’s a luxury tummy-leaner."

Ooh-does it sort of pin clothes back to prevent getting flour on them?Grin

Bluetrews25 · 18/01/2020 13:14

Is it fer taffy pullin'?

GlamGiraffe · 18/01/2020 13:20

@TheregoesBod the metal lined box is a wine/drinks cooler I think.

Traditional furniture always has a tin lined box or drawer at the bottom which you fill with ice and/ or cold water and stand your bottles in, I dont understand why someone would put one in a kitchen where they have a fridge though🤔.

Two of my antique sideboard have them. They're very useful to have in the dining room.

Ihavenoidewhatsgoingon · 18/01/2020 13:24

I had a look at the smallbone website - there are those things all over the photos in the unfitted kitchen category. Still have no idea what it’s for but it’s obviously posh

FlibbertyGiblets · 18/01/2020 13:29

This thread is most excellent. Double thumbs up from me:
One for OP, top guessing game.
Second for everyone's contributions. You're all vair funny women.

Thank you!

FlamingoAndJohn · 18/01/2020 13:45

This thread has made me realise how short I am. I’d be closer to catching a boob on that than a hip.

StCharlotte · 18/01/2020 13:50

It looks to me like a solution that hasn’t found its problem just yet!

Absolutely this.

EvilPea · 18/01/2020 13:57

Imagine how many times your child impales themselves on that when they get to just the right height.

NearlyGranny · 18/01/2020 14:19

Clearly some kind of birthing stool for MN earth mother types who cannot be lured out of the kitchen even to deliver!

AintNobodyHereButUsChickens · 18/01/2020 14:34

We have an answer!! And in light of all of your responses, I am disappointed it's for such a mundane reason. I was hoping for the sex prop!

But why was it in their showroom if they don't sell it?! I suppose it was an accessory along with the flour and all that!

origamiwarrior · 18/01/2020 14:42

I think the key is that in the OPs version, and in @theregoesbod version, is there is a drawer underneath. So you open the drawer, place your bowl in the drawer, then sweep your veg trimmings into it.

zoobincan · 18/01/2020 14:42

Oh god OP email them back and ask why it's on their display kitchen if they don't sell it! That's more of a mystery than actually not knowing what it was Grin

FlaviaAlbia · 18/01/2020 14:42

Reply and tell them you need one in your life and ask if there's anywhere you can see a demo of it being used Grin

PenelopePissedstop · 18/01/2020 14:45

Well Janet has said it is for beating assistance so for those who want to legitimise their kink we could play six degrees of separation. I think Janet is a MN’ER and this is the best laugh she has had in a while, she is now having a wee boogie humming Michael Jackson’s beat it in the show room with a Jazz hands big finish.

PenelopePissedstop · 18/01/2020 14:48

Now I think on is that made from Victoria wood ? Was there a copy of the Woman’s Weekly in that drawer?

FlamingoAndJohn · 18/01/2020 14:55

Why would you need somewhere to rest your mixing bowl?

GlamGiraffe · 18/01/2020 14:55

This sounds ridiculous. The ones on the Smallbones website are a wider band so font look like bowl holders.
Big bowls are flat on one side like the pic attached so you dont stir with them upright, or am I the only one?.
I'm sure they're for something else really. Someone needs to ring Smallbones!

PenguinsOnParade · 18/01/2020 15:35

I'd be guaranteed to drop any bowl I was using that with and would constantly have hip bruises from walking into it. I really thought it was going to be for sweeping things into the bin more easily, plus I now have a ridiculous amount of kitchen adverts everywhere I go on my phone now. Grin

Ihavenoidewhatsgoingon · 18/01/2020 15:37

I don’t get how they would work?..

You can “rest” the bowl on the counter (like the on in OPs photo) or if you are mixing it goes in one arm and you mix with the other hand

Would you have to hold the bowl in that contraption with your tummy, boob, hips (depending on your height) so wouldn’t be the most comfortable position for mixing??

Am I missing something?

MostlyChocolate · 18/01/2020 15:38

Hook a small biodegradable bag underneath to collect peelings.

notthemum · 18/01/2020 16:17

Well thank Christ for that but the metal bit definitely looks upside down to me but what do I know ?

LittleCandle · 18/01/2020 17:54

Well, what a let down. I was hoping for something really exciting!
