What's it for? We went to look a new kitchens and this hip smasher odd sticky-outy thing was built into one of the hardwood worktops and I can't work out what it's for Confused

Easy - it's pretentious, that's what it is!

Imagine how annoying it would be when you were using the drawer underneath. And I'd have a permanent ring of bruises like some kind of evil fairy curse...

YesIDoLoveCrisps · 18/01/2020 08:54

@MaisWeee she might use it on Meghan as well.

Cheesetrapped · 18/01/2020 08:56

Growing Boys, I am about 6 inches shorter than you. I too am growing some pretty tall boys though. My 10 year old is about the same height as me.

My kitchen work tops could also be slightly higher. I do not know if there is a universal height for them.

squaky · 18/01/2020 09:06

It's for cracking open a beer!

Wow this thread didn't stop last night! Hopefully they will email me back today and some of you can get some sleep Grin

Hahaha! I think this might be a classic thread.

Fifthtimelucky · 18/01/2020 09:32

It can't possibly be for holding a bowl. The sticky out bits don't come round far enough to secure anything and a bowl (or ostrich egg) would just fall straight through.

I'm intrigued to know what it is, though.

OldEvilOwl · 18/01/2020 09:45

Omg I was hoping someone would know by now! Was checking to find out 😂

Iwantacookie · 18/01/2020 09:46

Damn I would of thought the mystery would of been solved overnight.Grin

It is a device for facilitating sex in the kitchen. The woman sits on the top facing outwards, each leg on one side of the "horns", and the man goes in between the legs, belly resting on the curve.

Haggisfish · 18/01/2020 10:12

Brilliant thread op. Suggestions will be much better than whatever it is actually used for.

Explanation · 18/01/2020 10:25

Maybe they don't have many people actually chat to the salesperson in the showroom, most use the place as a free demo display and to get ideas then leave. So they build a random thing into the counter to start a conversation. I'd say it works!

AintNobodyHereButUsChickens · 18/01/2020 10:56

@Explanation that's sort of what the place is actually, you don't buy the kitchen there. It's just a showroom that you go to and view their products. You can make a shopping list on one of their computers then go home, access your shopping list with a login and order it all online from the comfort of your sofa.

Okay, I can stay silent any longer. I have one of these, bought second-hand. I think it’s Smallbone and it’s beautifully made but I’m embarrassed to admit I’m not actually quite sure what it’s for 🤔.

It’s unexpectedly comfy to lean against so for me it’s a luxury tummy-leaner. I’ve not felt able to share this with anyone so thankyou for this thread- it’s an opportunity to unburden my guilty secret. If I expand as I get older then I shall cut a larger curve out to cradle my ample midriff!

It has slots at the rear which I assume are for knives. There is a v odd removable block with a metal-lined drawer underneath. I think the most logical explanation is a vegetable chopping station for a vair posh kitchen (not mine obviously 😂).

Even odder, it has a granite top to the side which is only 70cm high. I’m fairly short and even I’d have to bend down to use it. What on earth you would use that for I have no idea. An incredibly smart pastry workstation for child cooking prodigies?

I’ll try to attach a picture

TheregoesBod · 18/01/2020 11:29

Aurynne, I’m kicking myself now. Ive never tried its effectiveness as a ‘device for facilitating sex in the kitchen’. What a lost opportunity!
Could the lowered granite platform be involved? Chilly on the buttocks perhaps 🍑🥶, but on a practical note at least it’s wipe clean.

I shall look at it in a new light as I sweep past 😂

Gazelda · 18/01/2020 11:40

theregoesbod the granite shelf would be handy for putting your cup of tea on while you're having sex.

GoldfishRampage · 18/01/2020 11:43

TheregoesBod

I think your post has just left me even more confused. The knives suggest more butchery than bakery but who knows?

I found this on wiki about tin lined drawers?
They could be modified to suit local needs; for example, dressers in the Scottish Highlands may have a "porridge drawer"—a tin lined drawer into which freshly made porridge was emptied and left to cool. When cold, slices of the porridge could be cut out and taken out of the house for later consumption

Here, I flipped the image Noeuf

Whatever it is, it's bespoke anyway...

PenguinsOnParade · 18/01/2020 12:28

It's Ayton Bespoke something. Ayton is a style the company sell but I still can't see the weird curved thing on the site. I'm scared I'm going to accidentally buy a kitchen if I'm not careful. Grin

EBearhug · 18/01/2020 12:34

Is it Ayton Bespoke Mode?

FlaviaAlbia · 18/01/2020 12:40

I'm actually getting a new kitchen soon. I felt a bit like I was cheating on my new one browsing the site Grin

MitziK · 18/01/2020 12:42

@TheregoesBod The lift off lid is for an inbuilt bin. Because posh people need that, apparently. Pastry stations tend to be lower so they can be used whilst sitting on a chair.

There are a few images online that show a round chopping board suspended around those sticky out hip hackers. Maybe the very posh chopping board with a channel cut out to slot onto said sticky out hip hacker was kept by the original owners?

HolaWeenie · 18/01/2020 12:46

Is it to help in some way whilst you're making fresh pasta!?

CreekIsRising · 18/01/2020 12:52

It's a Robespierre inspired food critic response device.
