Anyone want to help me decipher the name of my house? [pic included]

Hello all,

I’ve lived in my house over a year and only a few days ago I noticed that the concrete pillar outside our house has worn letters on it.

I’m very curious as to what they say, but try as I might, I can’t make out the word.

Any suggestions?

If I had to take a guess I would say Christian!

titchy · 12/01/2020 12:55

Camston?

Definitely ston at the end....

sockittome123 · 12/01/2020 12:56

The last three letters definitely look like TON, actually. I'm seeing C H S T O N as I look closer

FleurNancy · 12/01/2020 12:56

Try doing a rubbing of the letters onto paper? Might make the raised bits stand out better? Also, if you've got any old paperwork as part of the deeds then might be worth having a read of those. Roughly whereabouts in the country are you as dialect/local language might play a part?

FWIW I think it starts CH and ends in STON but it looks like an M inbetween which can't be right.

Coniston (there’s a lake in the Lake District called this)

MamehaSan · 12/01/2020 12:57

Something that ends in "Stone". The first letter is a C I think...

sockittome123 · 12/01/2020 12:57

Camston seems like a good shout!

Xanadu58 · 12/01/2020 12:57

Chilston ?

Palavah · 12/01/2020 12:58

Can you do a rubbing of it (paper over the top and pencil or ideally stubby wax crayon to go over it).

I agree STON at the end, and think the second letter is A.

CAUSTON?

DartmoorChef · 12/01/2020 12:58

It ends with stone

HowlsMovingBungalow · 12/01/2020 12:58

Something Stone

raffle · 12/01/2020 12:58

Gunston

MamehaSan · 12/01/2020 12:58

Actually I think it's Camstone on second look

Palavah · 12/01/2020 12:58

X-post!

HowlsMovingBungalow · 12/01/2020 12:59

Chilstone?

Cosyjimjamsforautumn · 12/01/2020 12:59

When was the house built? If 1911 or earlier someone may be able to look up on online census

ItsAHardKn0ckLife1 · 12/01/2020 12:59

I also agree it ends in “stone”

CHILSTONE

Lllot5 · 12/01/2020 13:00

Isn’t there another letter after the N at the end?
Chamstoni?

Littlejets · 12/01/2020 13:00

Looks like it could be Caustone to me?

MenopausalMafiosa · 12/01/2020 13:01

If the house is old enough, you could try doing a street address search on the 1939 census. It may give the name of the house.

Ludways · 12/01/2020 13:01

Chilstone

Or maybe Chitstone

CaptainMyCaptain · 12/01/2020 13:02

Camstone.

hattyhatshats · 12/01/2020 13:03

Have you googled the address to see if anything comes up?
