Just read this on their instagram page.
They plan on becoming private citizens

You can think it will happen without "salivating over it"

I’m seeing no evidence of that on MN.

DeRigueurMortis · 09/01/2020 18:02

It's being reported that the timing of the announcement wasn't about being stalled by the Palace but rather it had been leaked to The Scum Sun and they decided to put it out before it was reported on.

Obviously I have no idea if that's true.

Either way though, I can't see how they possibly thought releasing this news in the way they have was in their best interests.

There are many aspects of this plan that are simply not in their remit to decide/demand from retaining their Royal status whilst earning an income from it, expecting transatlantic security (without consulting Scotland Yard) to cherry picking which duties they perform.

They could well be playing a game of brinkmanship with the Palace and even public opinion but that's a very dangerous game, especially when their "plan" is so heavily weighted to their gain.

I can't help feel this is going to end badly because I cannot see how the Palace can give them what they want in its entirety yet not doing so only fuels their sense of alienation/victimisation (whether you think it's justified or not).

Overall they may have planned ahead with their brand "Sussex Royal" but I've got a strong feeling they are going to have to decide between that and "Sussex Duchy" pretty smartish watching for new trademarks if they want swap royal duty for the opportunity for financial and personal independence.

No salivation here. Opinions not allowed any more?

CurlyWurlyTwirly · 09/01/2020 18:08

Just watching Sky News.
The Queen, Prince Charles & Prince William have met today.
Apparently their teams and governments (plural) are going to have discussions over the next few days.
Probably covers overseas (security) costs as well.

Easiest solution. Strip them of their titles.
Cut the Duchy of Cornwall income.
Get them to pay rent on Frogmore.
None of the other royal grandchildren (the Phillips and the Yorks) don’t have security from the Met.
If they want it to continue; then they have to pay for it.

SoupDragon · 09/01/2020 18:10

Speculating about it complete with a timetable for remarrying and having a second family is salivating over it.

ThinkPositiveThoughts · 09/01/2020 18:11

What I wouldn’t give to be a fly on the wall for that.

The Queen muttering under her breath that she’s ninety-fucking-three and too old for this shit.

madcatladyforever · 09/01/2020 18:12

I don't blame them one little bit.
Harry's mother was hounded to her death by the press leaving him motherless at a very vulnerable age.
He is not going to see that happen to his own family.
Meghan has been the victim of endless rascist abuse, her family have been likened to trailer trash and have been actively encouraged by said press to makes arses of themselves and turn up in wheelchairs shouting their dissatisfaction at the palace front door.
The press et al have behaved like pond scum and everyone has gloried in their discomfort.
Fuck me can't we do better than this as human beings?

JacquesHammer · 09/01/2020 18:14

Opinions not allowed any more?

Of course. My opinion is a timescale for marriage failure together with projection as to new partner is utterly classless.

CurlyWurlyTwirly · 09/01/2020 18:15

@DeRigueurMortis

Good point on the Sussex Duchy brand.
They should not be allowed to use HrH for commercial gain.
I think they should keep the Duke / Duchess title because if Meghan is called Princess Henry; she will automatically be known as Princess Meghan by the press

QueenMargot · 09/01/2020 18:17

Fuck me can't we do better than this as human beings?

Well said.

IrmaFayLear · 09/01/2020 18:22

I don't think they'll live in Canada. Harry said it was "rainy". Well, it is in British Columbia!

They won't want to be stuck out on an island miles from anywhere; they'll be in Los Angeles where the celebrity action is. I don't think Harry will bail on this marriage. I don't think he will be happy in LA, but he'll have made his (monogrammed Sussex) bed and will have to lie in it.

PortiaCastis · 09/01/2020 18:23

Fuck me can't we do better than this as human beings

^^^^^ this and well said

CathyorClaire · 09/01/2020 18:23

Who on earth is going to wear a Sussex Royal bandana?

There's a massive tourist/overseas market for both British brands and all things royal. I imagine the bulk of the no doubt overpriced merchandise will be winging its way abroad.

Fraggot · 09/01/2020 18:27

He is not going to see that happen to his own family.

Yes they’ll be shrinking violets now, retreating away from the limelight they’ve always tried so hard to hide away from Hmm

SisterAgatha · 09/01/2020 18:28

I think all the business with Andrew has brought it home to him. They are in the same position rank wise - former spare now relegated to patronage work, all eyes on them because of their public spending compared to “value” because they are hangers on once the new generation take over.

He probably just thought fuck it. And why not. That said I’d rather not have paid for frogmore, they should pay that back out of these independent finances they have stacked up because the tax payer got the bill for so long.

Bluntness100 · 09/01/2020 18:33

What I find amusing is that according to thr media Andrew has fought tooth and nail to make Eugenie and Beatrice full time royals. It must be hugely galling for them all to watch Harry say no thanks and walk away, especially since between him and Meghan they have a shot of doing something independently that would be financially lucrative that the girls simply couldn't.

On the flip side, the bbc is reporting that palace officials have been told to make it work, as they wish to monetise the royal brand I'm really not sure how that is possible.

Alsohuman · 09/01/2020 18:37

No it isn’t.

Myimaginarycathasfleas · 09/01/2020 18:40

The Queen muttering under her breath that she’s ninety-fucking-three and too old for this shit.

My favourite post on this thread 😂

Dozer · 09/01/2020 18:42

Really want to see that sketch, with the queen played by Helen Mirren.

mrscampbellblackagain · 09/01/2020 18:52

If I was Harry and thought the proposal wasn't moving quickly enough, well I may leak it myself as an excuse to then release it officially.

Personally if I was reliant on daddy and granny paying me c£5m a year for the foreseeable, well I would have got them onside before any big announcement.

You know what? I think Beatrice deserves a mega big wedding, with bells ringing in every church and a whole bloody entourage. Why the hell not?! At least she's sticking around must be galling indeed.

To think that huge security bill only for them to make plans to feck off a year later.

QueenMargot · 09/01/2020 19:19

derigeur, I'd forgotten about Duchy Original Biscuits. The royals have been doing all this stuff anyway.

They could well be playing a game of brinkmanship with the Palace and even public opinion but that's a very dangerous game, especially when their "plan" is so heavily weighted to their gain. Yikes.

TheWorldturnedUpsideDown · 09/01/2020 19:20

Only dipped in, I think good one them.

Hilarious that thread has moved towards royal Sussex bandanas 😂😂👑

Good on the them, he didn't choose his life, he was born into this, it has privileges and immense burdens.
He had the most horrific tragedy happen to him as a very small child.
No money can insulate you fromage your mother painfully dying in a pointless shitty accident, hounded by press, but also the inquests and personal stuff dragged out publicly after... Awful for a young boy to hear whether his mum was pregnant, all her affairs, his dad... Awful.

I wish him and Megan who has a shitty nasty family every future happiness... Good one them!!

CurlyWurlyTwirly · 09/01/2020 19:23

Interesting point. I don’t think Harry would have the nous. Meghan on the other hand....
