Everybody calls me by my shortened name, occasionally I will get a full name call but I was wondering how far you would go?

I know somebody who refuses to answer if their name is shortened and it got me curious

Hate it.
I've always been full named as at school & university there was another with same name who shortened.
I can get quite grumpy about it.

Mrsjayy · 08/01/2020 17:06

I don't mind i have 3 shortenings of my name i only hate 1 of them but will answer to anything Smile

DaanSaaf · 08/01/2020 17:07

Much prefer it, hearing my full name makes me think I'm in trouble.

Mrsjayy · 08/01/2020 17:08

My name is long I think people think it is friendly to shorten but I prefer my full name .

OhWellThatsJustGreat · 08/01/2020 17:08

I'm not fussed, I'll answer to pretty much anything including 'hey you'
But then my mum has so many different nicknames she uses for me and only uses my actual name when taking about me and my full name when she was telling me off when I was younger.

DrKnickerbocker · 08/01/2020 17:09

I don't mind.
There's only one way to shorten my name, but I have a variety of nicknames too.

I'll answer to anything that isn't cunt tbh.

DappledThings · 08/01/2020 17:10

Don't mind it, just find it a bit odd as it so rarely happens

OneMoreRound · 08/01/2020 17:10

Hate it, but it's been happening all my life. Polite corrections go unheard. Signing cards and gift tags with my full name go ignored.

But, usually, when a person is given a nickname/shortened version used, it tends to be an affectionate thing. So I try to focus on that and not let it get to me. If I got shirty every time someone used my shortened name there wouldn't be many people left who liked me.

Notacluetwittwoo · 08/01/2020 17:11

I have a long name which when shortened people tend to mis-hear so in all formal situations as an adult I’ve always given my full name. To friends and family I’m always shortened. Some people shorten it at work etc without asking and usually I don’t mind but sometimes it feels a bit weird and over friendly. I’ll answer to anything though! Except a very common alternative version of my name which starts with a different letter (think difference between Anna and Hannah but that’s isn’t my name! Some people genuinely get my name that wrong and it really annoys me)

redwoodmazza · 08/01/2020 17:11

I have a 2 syllable name that can't be shortened. I would quite like to be able to be called something different...

1990shopefulftm · 08/01/2020 17:12

there's no way to shorten my name, any nicknames anyone has ever used have been longer.

oohnicevase · 08/01/2020 17:13

@Daansarf
The same , my full name is very formal and makes me feel like I'm in trouble .. I hate it !

katzenellenbogen · 08/01/2020 17:13

My name is very short - lots of people lengthen it and I wonder who they are talking about Grin

EmpressLesbianInChair · 08/01/2020 17:14

Mine has a few shortenings. I loathe one of them & I used a few of the others when I was younger, but now I use the whole thing most of the time. It’s just easier

inwood · 08/01/2020 17:15

My name has five letters and gets shortened all the bloody time. I don't mind when I know people but complete fandoms at work shortening it pisses me right off.

GreenBasket · 08/01/2020 17:16

I have loads of nicknames that I'll answer to - I don't mind the abbreviated versions of my (already abbreviated) name either.

Get bloody pissed off when new encounters shorten it straight away though, and when people use a y instead of an ie when I've specifically said "with an ie" or they are replying to something written and my name is right there!!!!!!

BearSoFair · 08/01/2020 17:17

My name can be shortened two ways. One I like and is what I introduce myself as, the other I really hate! If people use the one I hate I always politely correct them as I don't associate myself with that name at all, if that makes sense.

BearSoFair · 08/01/2020 17:17

GreenBasket My sister has the 'with an ie' problem too, it drives her mad!

Purpleartichoke · 08/01/2020 17:18

I hate it with a passion. It’s rude. Really, rude. Also hate when I tell people my name
and they ask me what I really go by.

DH and I intentional chose a name for dd that has no shortened version.

hairyxmasturkey · 08/01/2020 17:35

I love it.

ComtesseDeSpair · 08/01/2020 17:38

Only when boyfriend does it: he has a very particular Midwestern US accent and lilt that I like.

I can’t imagine automatically shortening somebody’s name without them actually saying “oh, everyone calls me Nicky” or whatever.

YorkieTheRabbit · 08/01/2020 17:42

The way my name could be shortened is by dropping three letters and adding a Z, think Daz, I loath it, never answered to it. I haven’t been call by a shortened name since I was around 15. I do have a nick name which I’m known by, DP his adult dcs and grandchildren call me it. I like it Smile

MrsCherry · 08/01/2020 17:43

I have been using a shortened version of my name for thirty years. All my family, friends and colleagues use it except my dad who never does and uses a different shortened name that I only ever used as a teenager. I don’t think he’ll ever use my preferred name.

MrsCherry · 08/01/2020 17:47

I’m never called by my long name, most people probably don’t even know that it is my name. Much prefer the shortened version.

Howmanysleepsnow · 08/01/2020 17:47

I only ever use my shortened name. Even my parents have only ever used the short version. The full name is birth-certificate only. Sometimes people i work with use a longer version (not colleagues) as they feel it’s “more professional” or “a nice name”. Unfortunately most of them guess at a longer version that isn’t my actual given name (they use one that ends with, rather than starts with, the name I use). I still answer to it (and correct them)... IF I realise it’s me they’re talking to!
