Do you like your name being shortened?

Everybody calls me by my shortened name, occasionally I will get a full name call but I was wondering how far you would go?

I know somebody who refuses to answer if their name is shortened and it got me curious

I hated my name being shortened so much I changed it. Only the Tax and NHS Medical Records people use my 'real' first name. Everyone else knows me by the I though un-shortenable four letter name I chose to replace it. Four letters with a diphthong in the middle of it which means occasionally, really very very occasionally, some prat tries to cut it down to a two letter noise grunt. Which I refuse to even acknowledge.

Everyone shortens my name apart from my mum and sister. Sounds horrible when DH says it in full like I’m going to be in trouble.
Conversely everyone calls DH by a shortening but I call him the full name to be affectionate. Ie everyone calls him Matt but I call him Matthew.

NoWordForFluffy · 08/01/2020 17:51

Only the shortest, one syllable, version. I don't like the -ky / -ki version.

I think it's funny when my clients shorten it on the phone as they tend to apologise for shortening it. I always say that I don't mind though.

In my work emails to other professionals I use the full version, unless it's an ex-colleague, then it's the short version.

chesterfuckingdrorrs · 08/01/2020 18:10

I dint even know the last time someone called me by my full name. It's been so long it sounds odd when it happens.

My name can be shortened, then shortened again, think Rebecca, Becky, Bec (not my name)
It irritates me a wee bit if people I only vaguely know call me the shortest version as it feels too familiar/overly friendly but that my issue so I still answer, usually through gritted teeth.

Ownerofmultiplechimps · 08/01/2020 18:11

I hate it personally, my name is only 5 letters & 2 syllables so shortening it sounds silly like you’ve forgotten to finish a word. An ex used to use only the 1st letter then add to random letters which made me despise him more (very glad he’s an ex obviously)

RaininSummer · 08/01/2020 18:12

Mine cant really be shortened and I am quite envious of people with that choice.

Snowflake9 · 08/01/2020 18:13

I don't acknowledge anyone who calls me by my shortened name. I used to ignore teachers !!

Ownerofmultiplechimps · 08/01/2020 18:13

@TheSandman you’ve articulated it way better than I could except in my case it’s a three letter noise grunt!

katzenellenbogen · 08/01/2020 18:14

DH and I intentional chose a name for dd that has no shortened version.

So did my parents. As posted above, mine just gets lengthened Sad

GreenTulips · 08/01/2020 18:15

Nope! I hate the short version, luckily it’s only my mum that uses it.

I tell others not to as the short version sounds awful.

Dowser · 08/01/2020 18:48

No ..hate it
It makes a man’s name..andI don’t want to be known by a man’s name

frankincenseandmur · 08/01/2020 18:53

No I hate it. It isn’t even a proper short version, just a common nickname for people with my name.

DropZoneOne · 08/01/2020 18:56

Hate it. Full name is only 2 syllables, shortening it is just lazy. I've had two people shorten it at work, realise I'm scowling, and say "oh, do you not like being called xxx". I always ask new starters what they prefer, I'd never assume a shortened version unless that's how someone introduces themselves.

JellyfishandShells · 08/01/2020 18:57

I've got a shortish and simple name anyway and hate it when it gets shortened by new acquaintances or something like an exercise class teacher being told my name is Jelly (its not, obvs) and then calling me Jel.

That's not my name. If its a name that is frequently used in the diminutive, then ask what someone prefers before you assume.

StylishDuck · 08/01/2020 19:05

I have a short version of my name that I hate and and even shorter version of my name that I like. (Think Katherine/Katie/Kate - not my real name).

People don't usually make the mistake of calling me the middle one twice Grin

MrsGolightyly · 08/01/2020 19:06

NO

CoffeeAndCarbs · 08/01/2020 19:08

DH and I were talking about this the other day. My name can't be shortened but his can (he always goes by his full name though). A colleague from a partner company he was dealing with at work the other day emailed him addressing him as 'Matt', despite the fact he always signs off as 'Matthew'.

I think it's really rude for someone to take it upon themselves to shorten someone's name. Unless 'Christopher' introduces himself to you as 'Chris', you shouldn't assume that you can call them that.

Undies1990 · 08/01/2020 19:16

No. I hate it when people shorten my name, especially people that don't know me personally. It's offensive, rude and crosses a boundary in my opinion.

iMatter · 08/01/2020 19:19

There are loads of shortenings of my name and I like them all.

Not very keen on my "full name" but no one ever calls me that (other than the vicar at Sunday school when I was 5)

chocolateisavegetable · 08/01/2020 19:45

It depends what your name is to start with. My name really doesn't work shortened. DH prefers the shortened version of his name.

ClientListQueen · 08/01/2020 19:45

Yep, I don't answer to my full name - only it because I don't recognise it when someone says it!

Lordfrontpaw · 08/01/2020 19:47

Not really because the actual shortened version of my name isn’t ‘me’ and noone calls me that! My actual shortened verison that family use is a bastardised version -
my elder sister couldn’t say my name when I was born so it just stuck. Lucky it wasn’t ‘cheetah’ as she loved/s monkeys.

Nottobesoldseparately · 08/01/2020 19:49

I hate the short version of my name.

Depending on who you are, how I know you, how long I've known you and how much I like you will depend on whether I answer, correct you or just ignore you.

I never use it, never have. Even my DH doesn't shorten it.

thatguiltyfeeling · 08/01/2020 19:51

My name is short and can't really be shortened apart from dropping a letter - imagine Ellie to Elle. I hate that and it was worse when a friend started doing "Elle-Elle" (clearly totally different from the example name but it gives an idea).
I don't mine just being called my initial though

Lordfrontpaw · 08/01/2020 19:52

People do lengthen short names though! I worked with a Lucy whose boss called her Lucifer!
