Do you like your name being shortened?

Everybody calls me by my shortened name, occasionally I will get a full name call but I was wondering how far you would go?

I know somebody who refuses to answer if their name is shortened and it got me curious

My name is only 3 letters and 1 syllable long and so can't be shortened. Which means if someone is to call me by a nickname which means it gets lengthened and usually to absolutely anything of any sound or length and I hate it. It means I get called absolutely anything and that's not my name. I'd much rather a longer name that could be shortened so it would at least sound vaguely similar to my actual name.

Poetryinaction · 08/01/2020 22:30

My name is 1 syllable.
But I love short names. My dh has a 1 syllable name too. My kids all have names that can be shortened to 1 syllable, and I regularly use this shortening.

MikeUniformMike · 08/01/2020 22:30

It can't but it can be lengthened to things I don't like and that aren't my name. I don't like it being misspelt. Some people see to think they know better than I do what my name is.

toomanyleggings · 08/01/2020 22:34

I had one person who shortened my name and I found it a bit of a novelty but I'd be annoyed if everyone did it

toomanypillows · 08/01/2020 22:34

Everywhere I've ever worked, people shorten my name without asking - from a 3 syllable name to a 1 syllable. When I was younger I didn't mind quite as much, but now I'm in my 40s I find the nickname/shortening a bit twee and young so I very much prefer my actual name.
I use it all the time in emails etc. and refer to myself by my given name, but no one takes the hint. Even when replying to emails that I've signed with my full name, people will reply with the nickname - and often I don't know them that well.
Also, the nickname begins with a different letter (think Michelle and Chelle) and I've lost count of the times people address mail and such to Ms C TooManyPillows instead of Ms M TooManyPillows.

I have a name that’s very easily shortened. I would shorten it myself when younger, but in my 50s it feels less ‘me’ and more ‘ageing used-car salesman’.

Nowadays, I generally use my full name, except with a few old friends who’ve known by my shortened name for decades. That said, I don’t mind if people shorten it.

WarmSausageTea · 08/01/2020 22:43

I don't like it being misspelt.

This irritates me, particularly with family members, and yes, there are a few who do. It really shouldn’t be that difficult to get a person’s name right.

TheGirlWhoLived · 08/01/2020 22:44

My name is fairly hard to shorten, I mean physically it can be done but it just sounds hugely informal. I tend to get the odd tradesperson that thinks we are on ‘Kirst’ terms Hmm

MikeUniformMike · 08/01/2020 22:48

I have a short name, something like Ann but I get Anne, Annie, Anna or Annabel, or Jill where I get Gill, Gillian or Jillian.
It's really annoying. I wish it didn't annoy me but it does.

puppymouse · 08/01/2020 22:49

I have a proper full name that's on my birth certificate but is never used. I take it up with IT or HR if it mistakenly gets used for emails addresses or other work IDs as I don't associate myself with that name.

Then there's a normal every day shortening of my name that my mum calls me and work colleagues who don't know me well call me.

Then there's a shortened version of the shorter version which all my friends and closest colleagues use.

Then there's my Dad. Who calls me by my initial Grin

I like it. I feel like it shows people are comfortable with me. I do occasionally flinch if it's used too quickly or by people trying to get me to buy something or do something though.

MAFIL · 08/01/2020 23:21

I hate it. Most people don't do it, but all my inlaws do and it drives me mad. I have given up trying to change them though as all my efforts have failed. I just seethe quietly these days.

Tinselviolin · 08/01/2020 23:27

My name is two syllables, so it can't really be shortened. One friend used to when I was younger, I didn't really mind but I was very clear it was only her that was allowed to!
My mum is known now by her full name, even to close friends, but old school friends and family call her by the shortening she had when younger, and my gran calls her a different shortening which noone else is allowed to use ever (think Elizabeth - Beth - Betty but not)
My friend introduces herself by her full name but once she knows you she will suggest the shortening,it's kind of like an honour Grin

BournvilleGreen · 08/01/2020 23:33

I have a 3-letter name that can't be shortened. So does DH. When people want to give us nicknames, they lengthen our names!
@Batqueen @MikeUniformMike I think there's a good chance we all have the same name Smile

dellacucina · 08/01/2020 23:37

My name is unusual. It feels bizarre and very familiar if people shorten my name. Virtually no one dares, however!

Thistle23 · 08/01/2020 23:40

Nobody is allowed to call me by a shortened version of my name. I love my name and hate the common nickname .

Hirsutefirs · 08/01/2020 23:40

Don’t be a big head. Take the name people give you.

notacooldad · 08/01/2020 23:47

I usually get called by my full name
I don't like the usual shortening of my name and only two people call me this. I don't correct them. My close friends call me a version of my name and I've got used to it. It's quite amusing when, for example my work colleagues meet my friends and they are using different names for me. This has resulted in some colleagues using friends version!

Along the lines of Elizabeth, Liz, Lizzie or David, Dave, Davey.

MinnieMountain · 09/01/2020 07:10

I introduce myself as full version at work, short socially. People tend to stick to it.

AtLeastThreeDrinks · 09/01/2020 09:36

Love it, I always introduce myself as my full name but when someone shortens it it makes them feel pally and familiar –I guess because my family shortens my name. I however will always use someone's full name until I know them a bit better or hear others shortening it!

As an aside, I feel really uncomfortable when someone introduces themself with a nickname that you're then expected to use. I feel really awkward until I know them properly!

amusedbush · 09/01/2020 11:01

My name can be shortened two ways and I despise one of them. I go by the other and have since I was at primary school. The only person to use my full name is my granny!

everyrosehasathorn · 09/01/2020 11:16

I hate my name and hate the shortened version even more so. Friends and family have been calling me the shortened version since I was a baby and even though I tell them I hate it, it’s too ingrained for them to stop. I move to another country years ago and my new friends and husband’s family only call me the full version. Also it’s easy to misspell or swap a letter which then changes my name completely.

I hate my name. Sigh

housemdwaswrong · 09/01/2020 11:26

I hate it, because there's no natural way to shorten it, so when people try, I end up being called by a letter! Drives me insane. My family shorten it, coming from a way that my brother pronounced it when he was learning to talk, but that's not a natural way, so people don't tend to. Thank Goodness.

Goodnightjude1 · 09/01/2020 11:29

My mum is the only person that calls me by my ‘full’ name. Everyone else shortens it, which is fine, I actually prefer it. Although it gives me the rage when people that don’t know me shorten my name without asking Angry

Damntheman · 09/01/2020 11:36

I prefer it. My full name also makes me feel like I'm in trouble. Sadly I have to go by my full name at work because Norwegians can't tell the difference between the short form of my name and another name entirely and I hate being called the wrong name.

That said, if someone doesn't like their name being shortened then I won't shorten it. It's not that hard to go by someone's personal preferences.

Doobigetta · 09/01/2020 11:45

My name has two common short versions. The first is similar to Lizzie- very childish and cutesey. I hate it. My family use it, which I’m resigned to not being able to do anything about, but anybody else would get extremely short shrift and I probably wouldn’t bother engaging with them again.
The second is more like Liz. Some of my older friends use it and I don’t mind too much, but I never use it myself and I’d correct anyone who didn’t know me well who used it. I always pay attention to the name people use themselves, I think it’s very rude and presumptive not to let people pick their own name.
