Do you like your name being shortened?

Everybody calls me by my shortened name, occasionally I will get a full name call but I was wondering how far you would go?

I know somebody who refuses to answer if their name is shortened and it got me curious

My name is three letters, one syllable, can't be shortened. I would have loved a name that could be shortened!

Footiefan2019 · 10/01/2020 21:32

I love when kids have really random shortenings of their name for some reason. I taught a Annabel that got called ‘nana’ like ‘banana’ and she was absolutely ace ! Also a Rafael that went by Ray Ray, he too was a top kid

My name is three letters, one syllable, can't be shortened.

In Australia your name would be lengthened! Grin

Katieweasel · 10/01/2020 21:35

My DH's name is Ian. Shortest name in the world but his family still shorten to "E". Always amazes me.

TeetotalKoala · 10/01/2020 21:36

Most people call me by the long version. But the shorted version is quite familiar, so generally people don't use it. Occasionally I've had someone use the short version and have thought 'oooh, that's a bit familiar', so subconsciously I must prefer the long version unless you're very close to me. My husband always uses the short and only uses the long version if he's cross with me. We were once having a spat over WhatsApp and he actually wrote the long name. I knew I was in trouble then!

Conversely everyone calls DH by a shortening but I call him the full name to be affectionate. Ie everyone calls him Matt but I call him Matthew.
Same!! DH will introduce himself as 'Matt', but I never, ever use the short version. Never have.

sockittome123 · 10/01/2020 21:36

People are too intimidated by me to try it Grin

TeetotalKoala · 10/01/2020 21:37

Also, I always introduce myself using the long version. It's my name. It's six letters. It's not long or taxing.

Gogolego · 10/01/2020 21:39

Didn't used to
But my full name is quite flowery and I don't work in a flowery job and it was simpler to shorten it and it's crept into other areas of my life. Also easier in a crowded place to shorten it

MAFIL · 10/01/2020 21:40

@Katieweasel are you me?!!
It's exactly the same with my husband and his family and it really infuriates me. How can you need to shorten a name that is only 3 letters!Angry

Hadenoughofitall441 · 10/01/2020 22:33

I prefer it 😁 I hate my full name, it sets my teeth on edge when people call me it. My daughter has her name shortened and we use 2 names. My sons name couldn’t be shortened, but one of his teachers extended it and now they all say it at his old school and his new school 😂🤦🏼‍♀️ His friends call him by a different nickname.

stoplickingthetelly · 10/01/2020 23:08

I’ve only got a short name and no one shortens it. My dd has got a long name and we deliberately use a shortened version and it suits her well, only occasionally does she get her full name.

SnowGo · 10/01/2020 23:13

I go by a shortened version of my name at work (though IMO it is a nice and full name in itself) - mainly because I don't want to subject people to the similar vowel filled jumble that is my full name, and because people often forget the last syllable from my full first name as its longish, turning it into a name I hate (because people always call me it by mistake).

fussychica · 10/01/2020 23:47

Mine can't be shortened so people try to change it and call me the longer versionConfused. I like my name as it is thanks.

LiveFatsDieYoGnu · 11/01/2020 07:18

My name doesn't really lend itself to shortening. DH's has several possible shortenings but he always goes by his full name. Everyone uses his full name except BIL, who has decided to shorten it despite literally noone else doing so, and it irks me immensely!

lostsoulsunited · 11/01/2020 07:25

My birth certificate name is the short version but people sometimes call me the long version. It's irritating as it's not the right name, not my name but like Kathleen and Katherine

Hushabyelullaby · 11/01/2020 08:36

I hate mine being shortened and no one has ever done it (many have tried, but I refuse to answer)
