Do you like your name being shortened?

Everybody calls me by my shortened name, occasionally I will get a full name call but I was wondering how far you would go?

I know somebody who refuses to answer if their name is shortened and it got me curious

I have a 3 syllable name that everyone uses. Always makes me sad that no one likes me enough to shorten it Sad

Lordfrontpaw · 08/01/2020 19:54

Maybe it’s just a really pretty name?

veinticinco · 08/01/2020 20:03

Growing up, I don't think any of my friends went by their full name (most of us went by ridiculous nicknames completely unrelated to our names even) so tend to shorten/lengthen names instinctually. I will, however, call people by their full name when asked so please speak up if that's what you'd prefer!

Animum2 · 08/01/2020 20:06

Another thing is my name can be spelt two ways and even though on emails you can clearly see how it's spelt I still get replies using my name with the wrong spelling, I frequently tell people the correct spelling but some time nobody really listens!

I like it, but only when its people I know, not strangers who have assumed it's ok.

managedmis · 08/01/2020 20:21

I hate it when people don't shorten it!

Purpleartichoke · 08/01/2020 20:25

Surely if a person prefers the shortened version of their name, they introduce themself as such.

feelingdizzy · 08/01/2020 20:26

I'm only known by my short name (except by my Mum) my long name doesnt really feel like my name .Its like a formal title and I don't really suit it.

RiftGibbon · 08/01/2020 20:27

I don't like my full name - I don't use it when filling out documents/forms, and nobody calls me it other than my MIL.

Baboutheocelot · 08/01/2020 20:28

I’ve never been known as my long name. The only time I get called it is at the doctor or the bank. I like the shortened version, the long version doesn’t feel like my name.

Ilovelala · 08/01/2020 20:28

Only people close to me shorten my name and I'm fine with it. My mum doesnt shorten my name though and my husband has never called me by my name in 11 years.

SardineJam · 08/01/2020 20:28

Im in two minds about this, I wouldn't mind if it's a close friend but object to colleagues and acquaintances shortening it - even close friends call me by my full name, perhaps I give off vibes to them to not shorten it 🙄

Mandarinfish · 08/01/2020 20:30

I prefer to be called by my shortened name (and everyone does).

Concestor · 08/01/2020 20:32

No. I refuse to answer if my name is shortened except by my brother or one cousin.

OhNoMyCheds · 08/01/2020 20:43

Dislike it greatly. Not sure if it was the area I grew up in but when I was younger lots of people would try and shorten it. I only realised the other day that no one I know now tries to do that. Thank fuck.

katie43210 · 08/01/2020 20:44

I'm a Catherine so have loads of shortened variations, I'm known by 1 name at work, another by friends and family use my full name. I don't think work even asked what I prefer...

tobee · 08/01/2020 20:45

I don't mind; people always used to call me by my short name but they hardly ever do now.

My Dh is known in professional life as his short name and I usually call him his full name. If I use it in front of his work colleagues I've known them not know to whom I referring. Even though it's a well known short form. For eg if he was known as Mike at work and I called him Michael (not his name) And I'm like Hmm!!

fantasmasgoria1 · 08/01/2020 20:47

No I hate it

CakeAndGin · 08/01/2020 20:58

Another with an abbreviated version and then a shorter version of the abbreviated version.

I personally never go by my full name. It is my name in my email but I put the abbreviated version in my signature and will always sign off with the abbreviated version. I will also introduce myself (professionally or socially) as the abbreviated version. Mostly for professional uses I go by the abbreviated version and with family and friends I go with the shortened version of the abbreviated version. Our head of department has started calling me the shortened version and this has been picked up by the rest of my department and I’m uncomfortable with that. Not uncomfortable enough to correct anyone though because I don’t mind it out of the context of work and it’s automatic to respond to it.

With the abbreviated version, I also have the ‘ie’ instead of ‘y’ problem. People are permanently spelling my name wrong. I don’t correct them but it does bother me when I’ve taken the time to look how their name is spelt/ how they’ve chosen to be referred to. It’s more annoying with those that have different spellings or chose to go by longer version. So I had someone called Christopher email me and I replied with my abbreviated name spelt with ‘ie’. He responded with my full name, fine he didn’t want to assume to shorten it - no big deal. I’ve responded with Christopher again and closed my email with abbreviated with ‘ie’. This time he responds with my abbreviated version but with a ‘y’, which just makes me think that Christopher is a twat.

DrMadelineMaxwell · 08/01/2020 21:25

Not at all. My dh doesn't shorten it, nor does he like his being shortened either.

HotSince82 · 08/01/2020 21:33

I don't mind really.
My full name is beautiful but three syllables.
Its a common name for girls born in the eighties and has a couple of diminutives which are names in their own right. I tolelrate these as most people automatically call me by the most popular one.
It also has a three word diminutive which I like most of all as it is a very affectionate term and I sort of think it conveys a sense of friendliness when others use it.

MustBeThursday · 08/01/2020 21:38

Doesn't bother me, but my full name is only 2 syllables and usually short for something else. I get more annoyed if people assume it's not my full name and use the long version.

Although I have been known to answer to completely different names before now because I've found it too awkward to correct people.

InvisibleToEveryone · 08/01/2020 22:22

Usually shortened version.

Rarely hear the full version, I think the only person who uses it is an old school friend, and it sounds weird.

Full version on everything official though.

Batqueen · 08/01/2020 22:25

My name is three letters long. Sometimes (rarely luckily) people shorten it to two. That leaves me unimpressed. It's not like it's hard to say. . .
