I haven't ever met any famous people.

OP posts:
Sundancer77 · 03/01/2020 22:24

Served Melanie Sykes at a tennis club around 20 years ago..expected her to be nicer than she was.
Worked for Peter Jones and his wife a few times-very lovely people.
Holly W-very unsure if she was actually really nice or not

TheWayOfTheWorld · 03/01/2020 22:26

Oo, I've met a few, none super exciting though.

Trinny - this was at the Lady Garden gala ball a couple of years ago and she actually spoke to me and my colleague before the VIPs turned up. She was in the middle of doing my colours when she got collared by Tania Brier Angry. Very tall and a bit mad but nice enough.

Professor Robert Winston - my husband and I shared a ski lift with him and did the British thing of pretending that we had no idea who he was. Had a pleasant conversation about the Alps Smile

Nicola Horlick - really lovely, I've met her several times through work.

I am meant to be meeting William Shatner in a couple of months, v excited about that 🤓

Deborah Frances White (The Guilty Feminist) - rude and miserable. It was pre gig so perhaps she needed to be like that to get herself in the right mindset.

Uma Thurman - didn't meet as such, but she was departing plane out of first and I was right behind her (from business rather than first!) and she seemed very nice and polite to the crew etc

Gordon Brown - shared a lift. Only twigged who he was as he exited said lift.

Crunched · 03/01/2020 22:26

Well golddustwomen, I was in a country hotel. I had chosen this place to take my niece’s Australian bf for coffee and cakes as it was typically’English’ (think Midsummer Murders). The only other people in the were David Jason and a similarly aged man with him. My young Australian friend, an army private, hugely respectful, was so excited to see such a huge star. He went over and said “Excuse me, could I say how much I love what you do” at this point DJ swept his hand as if in dismissal and the other gentleman snapped “leave us”. My friend was gutted and I felt awful.
I understand that it may have been annoying but there are nicer ways to be asked to go away.

CakeAndGin · 03/01/2020 22:30

Same Judi Dench... according to my mother anyway!

We were visiting London when I was about 10 and a lady started talking to me on the tube and my mum indicated it was fine to answer her back (you know, stranger danger). So I told her how I’d been on the London eye and she asked about my school. As we got off the tube, mum recognised and pointed with a shocked face and apparently Judi Dench nodded and smiled that she hadn’t been recognised before. If it wasn’t Judi Dench it was still a nice.

I did some low level acting in my early teens so I met some low level famous people. A couple of people from Emmerdale (the lady had red hair but no idea of her name). Ben, Tony and Mercedes from Hollyoaks back in the day.

OverByYer · 03/01/2020 22:32

PPs don’t just post lists. Doesn’t mean anything.
At least a bit of context and what they were like.
I could list a dozen or so celebs I’ve seen in the street but doesn’t mean a lot.

I also met Woody Harrlelson, sat by him in the theatre watching ‘Art’, I think he was there as Norm from Cheers was in it.
Had a chat with him after and he signed the programme for me. He was very nice and unassuming

CakeAndGin · 03/01/2020 22:32

*Dame not same 🤦‍♀️

Sylvestre · 03/01/2020 22:36

Jill Murphy - Peace At Last,The Worst Witch. She was in the cabin next door to ours with her little boy on holiday over 20 years ago. She was absolutely lovely and we only found out in passing what she did when were were talking on an activity one day. DD was massively into The Worst Witch at the time and has bought one of her books to read while we were away. Jill drew a beautiful illustration for her in it and signed it. It was such a lovely thing for her to do and very much appreciated.

George Clooney twice at press conferences while promoting films. Exactly how you’d expect - flirty with everyone, very at ease and charming and diligent at being nice to fans. No idea what he might be like in RL. Same with Brad Pitt, Matt Damon and Mark Wahlberg. All very lovely to both fans and press but not a clue as to what they’re actually like.

Didn’t meet them but William, Kate and George were on the same train to London. Standard class. Sat at very front of carriage. William took George to the loo twice en route. There was no fuss by staff and they were all very quiet. I was very surprised to see them there. It was just before Charlotte was on the scene I think.

Ian Hislop on same train route. I think it was first class as I was on a work trip. Smiled when I smiled at him. Very quiet also.

fairgroundsnack · 03/01/2020 22:36

Prince Andrew - he was boring, short and chubby!
My mum met Cliff Richard in Tesco and had a chat with him about the news headlines...

fairgroundsnack · 03/01/2020 22:37

Oh and Lady Hale! She presented me with an award. I was totally star struck...

overnightangel · 03/01/2020 22:39

Rory McGrath stayed in the hotel I worked in about 20 years ago whilst filming a programme here.
Rude, drunk, self-important, grumpy.

FartyFenella · 03/01/2020 22:44

Alan Rickman. He introduced himself to me - as if I didn't know who he was! He was the loveliest man and kindly listened to me waffling on. And that voice! That is one of my most treasured memories.

Phyllida Law - a superb actress and Emma Thompson's DM. We were both snowed in at the same theatre many years ago and she joined in with manning the restaurant for all the stranded people. I remember her clearing tables with a tea towel chucked over her shoulder and having a chat and a laugh with everyone.

Nichola McAuliffe - she was also there that night and also did a shift in the restaurant and entertained the stranded people by singing songs at the piano.

Willie Ross - who played Sue's Dad in the film of Rita, Sue and Bob Too. He was reprising his role at our theatre. He was a lovely man and very good company.

And not exactly famous by 'famous' standards but Neil McCaul. I worked with him for a few weeks back in 1998 in a musical. The bugger used to steal my fags!

BUT! He was one of the 3 priests in Father Ted who got lost in the lingerie department. That makes me very happy! The best ever episode of Father Ted!

And he got murdered very, very horribly in Midsomer Murders. That also makes me very happy!

Wren77 · 03/01/2020 22:47

About 30 years ago I had a Saturday job in a book shop in Yorkshire and served Emma Thompson. I still remember how I went bright red when I looked up from what I was doing at the counter and realised who it was!

AgeLikeWine · 03/01/2020 22:48

Most of the senior New Labour politicians, including Tony & Cherie Blair, John Prescott, David Blunkett, Robin Cook etc etc.

I was a Labour activist in a very important East Midlands marginal seat in the late 90s, and everyone came up from London to campaign in our area. We won Smile.

Tony knew he was about to become PM, and behaved accordingly. He was more charismatic than anyone you have ever met. Cherie came across as being extremely bright, and she was very attractive in the flesh.

Chelsea26 · 03/01/2020 22:51

This is very interesting! I work at a place where a host of famous people work. I don’t need to interact with them but 99% of these ring true about the vibe I get off people I haven’t spoken to.

Apart from David Jason - he’s really lovely, I’m sorry to hear your story @Crunched but I would put it down to a bad day/bad timing

The rest seem spot on in the nice ones are nice all of the time and the arseholes are arseholes all of the time

Dementedmagpie · 03/01/2020 22:54

My mum met cliff Richard once. She came back from some event saying we'd all be very excited about who she just met. It was the biggest let down ever when she told us (although I wasn't in the least bit bothered that I hadn't gone with her!)

SantaBeckett · 03/01/2020 22:55

I used to love William Shatner but he seems to have a reputation as an arsehole. I hope he isn't!!

RightOnTheEdge · 03/01/2020 23:02

Sheikh Mohammad Al Maktoum, was very polite to meet. I do know about all the shocking stories about him and his family now though.

Claire King a few times, friendly and a good laugh very generous at Christmas.
Her then husband who played Chris Tate in Emmerdale, stuck up and miserable.

Ozzie Yue an actor who's been in Father Ted, Coronation Street and Nuns on the Run. I had the pleasure of meeting him a few times he was absolutely lovely and so was his wife.
I met them all because they owned racehorses that I looked after as their groom.

I met John Prescott because he was the judge for best turned out horse in the race and I won.
Frankie Dettori, Keiron Fallon and Sylvestre Da Sousa of they count as famous outside racing? Frankie won on my horse and did his flying dismount which was fun.

Rob Lowe - utterly gorgeous & charming 💙

Michael Bublé (numerous times) - hilarious, gorgeous, charming & down to earth, really lovely 💙

Take That - Mark, Gary & Howard lovely, Jason quiet & Rob a bit of a plum (but it was years & years ago)

Bryan Adams - nice enough

Richard Branson - nice but looked like a tramp (in the nicest possible way) & was wandering around the plane seconds before landing 😳

samandpoppysmummy · 03/01/2020 23:06

Lorraine Kelly - I appeared on GMTV for 4 days in a row in 2003 testing talking about beauty products) with three of my close friends. A work colleague's younger sister had a job at GMTV and was producing her first 'segment' and asked us to do it - it was so much fun and I was amazed how many random people recognised me from it - it was like being a very minor celebrity for a week. Also met Kate Garraway in the 'green room' while we were waiting to go on.

All of the original Blondie (Debbie, Chris Stein, Jimmy Destri, Clem Burke at an after-party after I'd won tickets in a phone-in radio competition to a small invitation-only gig at the Villiers Street Theatre in September 2003. I chatted to them all for ages despite being utterly star struck, especially by Debbie). And then met Gary Valentine (who hasn't been at the gig) when me and DH took him out to dinner at L'Escargot in December 2003 - DH just emailed him and invited him and he said yes 😁 - it was an amazing evening).

David Beckham - I won a Virgin Radio
competition to meet him in 2002. I was properly star struck and could hardly speak 🤩

Theresa May - quite a few times at small social gatherings with DH - she is our local MP.

Mohammed Al Fayed, Kevin Keegan and Karren Brady at the Fulham FC promotion party held in the Harrods 4th Floor restaurant when they were promoted to the premier league in 2001 (I had a part time job in the ticket office at the time),

The Queen and Prince Philip when they came to officially open the place I currently work in 2014.

Morrissey and Bjork - met randomly in a pub and a cafe when I worked in Camden. Also saw lots of BritPop stars out and about in Camden (1994-95) but didn't really talk to them so it doesn't count.

Jeremy Kyle - I had a VIP backstage pass at the V festival in 2003 and 2004 as I worked in a media agency. I got to know quite a few of the Virgin DJs - none were really 'famous' at the time unless you were a Virgin Radio listener, but Jeremy invited me to sit in on his evening radio show and I did once - it was much less glamorous than I expected it to be! He became famous a few years later when he moved from radio to TV.

Terry Wogan - lived very locally to me and met him at several social events, he was always absolutely lovely.

All of the X Factor judges and contestants at the after party of one of the shows filmed at Wembley in 2011- including all of Little Mix. We had VIP tickets through a contact at DH's work.

I think there are probably more that I've forgotten about 😁

marcopront · 03/01/2020 23:07
