Just seen a famous person in Aldi but I don’t know who

Can you help me?

He’s older, late sixties, early seventies. Tall, white, slim, glasses, white/gray hair. Very well spoken/posh. I’m not 100% about whether he’s a journalist/broadcaster or an actor. Nothing obvious on Google..... a bit vague I know but if Mumsnet can find someone’s ring in Archway I am sure it can help me identify this guy!

@Elderflower14, I'm on a painted-rock-hunting Facebook group with your son, he's almost properly famous in his own right Grin

NewModelArmyMayhem18 · 03/01/2020 19:49

I bet Putney doesn't have an Aldi - they are not commonplace in the naice parts of London.

Elderflower14 · 03/01/2020 19:56

@eBooksAreBooks I know... He was out clubbing with one of the finalists from Drag Race recently and spent NYE with a BGT act!! ♥

BarbaraofSeville · 03/01/2020 20:01

Clicks glasses with toomuchtrouble4me in the uncultured thickos corner.

The only Waitrose in my city is right opposite an Aldi so I don't know what it says about the demographics of that neighbourhood.

I saw Michael Palin on a train once in the days when we were still allowed to travel first class for work and it would have been around the same time that I saw Ramon Tikaram in Kings cross station at the height of his 'Ferdy from This Life' fame.

Browniegal13 · 03/01/2020 20:04

@PaperbackBlighter. Anthony Head lives near me. An often be seen in the local Budgens or horse shop! Z

manicmij · 03/01/2020 20:22

I too was thinking Nigel Havers.

Taddda · 03/01/2020 20:29

Jonathan Pryce was staying in a hotel I was in, he was complaining (politely!) at reception about the noise coming from the room above him, the Receptionist apologised and said 'Sorry sir, we have some quite famous celebrities staying who seem to be partying quite alot, I'll try to have a quiet word'....he smiled, said thank you and walked away- then the other guy behind reception ran to his colleague and shouted 'OMFG that's that guy outta pirates of the Caribbean'.....receptionist went white.

@scarbados I live in Leeds and I remember going to watch An evening with Alan Rickman' or something like that at the Leeds playhouse where he was being interviewed as he was sat on stage. It must have been 20 years ago now. Was that the night?

scarbados · 03/01/2020 20:47

minesagin37 - It was around that time. He was directing The Winter Guest and did the In Conversation thing either just before or just after the run of the play. We met him the week before the play started.

Ages ago when I was a school governor I met David Puttnam very briefly. He must meet thousands of people. Months, probably years, later I was on a train and saw someone very familiar. I smiled cheerily and said hello and he smiled back. Then it clicked. David Puttnam. He couldn't possibly have remembered me but he clearly has lovely manners.

I did similar to Jack Dee when I saw him at a school event. Never met him in my life but I knew I knew him so said hello and belatedly worked out who he was minutes later. He seemed less than delighted to be greeted by a total stranger, but the imminent prospect of listening to a beginners' string group can do that to a person. Grin

lilgreen · 03/01/2020 21:18

It was in Kingston Aldi and it was Jack Whitehall’s dad.

BikeRunSki · 03/01/2020 21:24

I’ve told this story on her me before, but I’ll say again. About 20 years ago my widowed DM was at a big NYE party, and her friend/host introduced her to someone who DM thought was familiar, maybe a friend of a friend. They chatted for a few mins when DM realised who he was a burst out “Oh My God, you’re Ringo Starr!”.

WobblyLondoner · 03/01/2020 21:25

That's hilarious @AllYouGoodGoodPeople - he really does look like (a super neat version of) John Curtice. I'd not have made the connection though as I'd no idea what Jack Whitehall's dad looks like until this post.

OstrichRunning · 03/01/2020 21:26

I grey it @JesusMaryAndJosepheen! I'd love to see Twink in Dunnes Grin

I once found myself in a pub (shock) sitting near Bono who was having a drink with the artist Guggi.

OstrichRunning · 03/01/2020 21:26

got not grey

smilingontheinside · 03/01/2020 21:28

Merryweather80 I have served Toyah Wilcox a few times she is nice and her husband is a proper gentleman. I've bumped into Michael Hesseltine in the high street and saw the actor who played the oompah loompah in Charlie and the chocolate factory in Heathrow airport (wish it had been Jonny Depp 😍). Servex a famous footballer many years ago (80's) can't remember his name (not a fan of football) but do remembef he had the most beautiful cashmere camel coat on. All the male staff were quizzing me about I was not at all starstruck Grin

WobblyLondoner · 03/01/2020 21:28

I once bumped into Ralph Feinns coming down some cinema steps in Mayfair. Never found him particularly attractive on screen but he was very gorgeous in real life (and gave me a lovely smile) Smile

TheTinselrati · 03/01/2020 21:42

I stood next to Richard Briars at the till in M&S once. I had to resist the urge to hug him.

DuMondeB · 03/01/2020 21:50

I once saw Alan Rickman stride in front of me across Covent Garden in a long swirly coat and nearly swooned. That man just oozed charisma.

I sat directly opposite him on a train (table seat) for 4 hours! Didn’t dare look up because I couldn’t trust myself not to stare at him

RoyEastmannKodak · 03/01/2020 21:53

@scarbados I am speechless with awe re Alan Rickman and the impromptu gin drinking session. I loved that man as an actor, from Severus Snape to Hans Gruber with my absolute favourite being Jamie in Truly Madly Deeply. Respect! To him.. and you!

LahndonTown · 03/01/2020 21:54

After flying back from Vegas and having had 2 hours sleep I looked over and recognised this guy stood across from me. Took me a second to realise and did a double take - it was Tom Jones.
I have no idea what came over me (I was late twenties and this was only a few years ago) I said to my DH 'look it's Tom Jones'. He said 'where'... It was literally just us and him in the hall so not by any means a crowded place. By the time he had turned to question me I'd gone up to him and asked to have a photo with him. I looked like absolute shit, no make up and tired but he was so lovely, he posed for a photo and I just started talking about going home to Wales, as though he knew every tiny village there.
DH likes to bring this up very often at how mental I was and I cringe thinking about it.

lilgreen · 03/01/2020 21:54

Saw Jeremy Paxman having coffee at the Hyde Park cafe. He was shorter than I expected but had a nice overcoat on.

Gonewiththemadness · 03/01/2020 22:40

@PerfectionistProcrastinator my favourite comment ever 🤣😂🤣😂

Noodledoodledoo · 03/01/2020 22:46

@Elderflower14 I am SOOOOO jealous I loved Archie.

JohnLewisIain · 03/01/2020 22:56

I once saw Warwick Davis in Peterborough Waitrose. I was with DD who is a massive Harry Potter fan, so I played it cool and ran up and down the aisles screeching “Where is the yoghurt? Where is the YOGHURT?????”

DD says it was one of the most embarrassing days of her life.
