Just seen a famous person in Aldi but I don’t know who

Can you help me?

He’s older, late sixties, early seventies. Tall, white, slim, glasses, white/gray hair. Very well spoken/posh. I’m not 100% about whether he’s a journalist/broadcaster or an actor. Nothing obvious on Google..... a bit vague I know but if Mumsnet can find someone’s ring in Archway I am sure it can help me identify this guy!

Nigel lives north of the river so I doubt you see him in Kingston.

Amanlamp100 · 03/01/2020 23:16

Philip Schofield 😀

Loola2009 · 03/01/2020 23:16

We get Eric Pollard in our Aldi 😂 his mum lives locally so he’s quite often at our local shops!

Dip1 · 03/01/2020 23:19

Ronnie Corbett?

sparkylove · 03/01/2020 23:51

Nick from the Apprentice? Can't see him shopping in Aldi mind

FloraGreysteel · 03/01/2020 23:56

Alan Partridge? Grin

Willow2017 · 04/01/2020 00:18

OP found out who it was 20 minutes after posting YESTERDAY!!

mrscolonelbrandon · 04/01/2020 03:51

Scarbados you lucky lucky thing as you can see by my MN name I’m also a very big fan !!

I once saw Gemma Collins in marks and then in the wimpey! But would rather have bumped into Alan Rickman!

Rockbird · 04/01/2020 05:57

Who the hell is Jack Whitehall, never mind his dad? Clearly I need to get out more... Grin

GlamGiraffe · 04/01/2020 06:24

I'm utterly oblivious to 'slebs', not a clue who any of them are. I was with DS(17) and DD(2) getting off a train and a man on the platform grabbed the buggy yo lift it off for me and said a few words. DS almost collapsed in shock behind me as he dragged me alond the platform, "
mummy, do you KNOW who that man is?"
"Erm know, hes the man I always see who I chat to"
Eye roll, shock, instant phone action presumably to about 50 people. Apparently I'm very stupid because I "know' the main man from fame of thrones but have no clue. I still dont know what his name is.
There are loads around here. One they are pointed out to me most are very short which is always weird. Nigella Lawson is strangest, she is unrecognisable off screen. I dont know what they do to her on tv but it's nothing short of miraculous!

Zoflorabore · 04/01/2020 06:26

My mum and her new husband were going on honeymoon last summer and were staying in the airport hotel due to an early start. 3 times they ended up getting in the lift at the same time as Roy Chubby Brown! They initially didn’t click who he was but he must have thought they were stalkers.

WildIrishRose1 · 04/01/2020 07:00

As I was on my way to meet friends yesterday afternoon, I thought I saw Miriam Margolyes chatting to someone on the street. Still not sure, as it was in Dublin, but I did a double take at the time.
A few years ago I was walking down Grafton Street and I saw a familiar face heading toward me. I couldn't remember where I knew him from, so I greeted him with a cheery "hello, are are you?", to which he smiled, only to realise as I passed him that it was Alan Rickman.

Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g · 04/01/2020 07:55

GlamGiraffe, Kit Harington, Charles Dance, Nikolaj Coster-Waldau? Game of Thrones had a huge cast. Not Peter Dinklage, who was arguably the best male character, as he's American and I assume lives over there. I'm with your son, I'd have been in shock too!

HowlsMovingBungalow · 04/01/2020 08:05

I saw Charles Dance in the chilled section in Sainsburys many moons ago, it was a surreal moment.

I also thought I recognised someone famous in my then local Waitrose, his face and voice were recognisable but I just couldn't put a name to him - oddly enough a week or so later I recognised his voice on a radio programme - it was James Purefoy.

IlsSortLaPlupartAuNuitMostly · 04/01/2020 08:34

Oh come on GlamGiraffe, you can’t leave it like that especially on this thread. You’ve got to help us work it out now. What was his age, height, nationality, skin colour, hair colour, accent? Googling Game Of Thrones cast will give you a set of photos in order of prominence.

BarbaraofSeville · 04/01/2020 08:50

I wouldn't know any of the cast of Game of Thrones if they all started filming right here in my living room.

But I've just remembered that we once shared the same flight back from Mallorca as Malandra Burrows who is/was 'Kathy from Emmerdale' (I haven't watched any soaps for about 30 years so I've no idea if she still does that). But DP sort of knows her anyway as she was the 'promotional face' of a company that he worked for a very long time ago.

Flynnshine · 04/01/2020 09:03

So glad you got your answer OP!
I once did that really embarrassing thing where you recognise a face and assume it's someone you know and it turns out you do, but only from the TV!
Shopping in the supermarket and caught eyes with a man I recognised, assumed he was a Dad from my daughters school so said hi, and in passing asked how his summer was going etc, he looked totally bewildered but was polite and smiley... turns out it was Nigel Harman, ex Eastenders actor. Not a Dad from the school! Grin

Foxyloxy1plus1 · 04/01/2020 09:53

Sheila Hancock having breakfast in Cote Brasserie
Robson Green in Sainsbury’s
Brian May in WH Smith (a long time ago)

We live near a place that has a well known theatre, so there are quite often actors in the town.

NewModelArmyMayhem18 · 04/01/2020 10:02

I saw Nigel Havers in Mayfair a year or so ago. I recognised him by his very particular style coiffed hair as he walked purposefully along. He is small, no more than 5 foot five? He was immaculately turned out wearing mustard coloured cord trousers.

I've seen loads of famous people in my time but fewer these days (clearly I just don't get out as much!).

Hightlight had to be a shopping trip in Portobello Road years ago. In the one afternoon (and I was out sightseeing rather than celeb spotting with a German friend) we saw Nick Cave buying children's books, Michael York and his wife and someone else very famous but who clearly didn't leave such a lasting impression on me. I remember thinking that three celeb spots in one day was pretty cool.

I've seen Richard Grant strolling along Picadilly in my time too. He was very tall with a very commanding presence.

And Stella McCartney doing very, very frequent trips to the loo in a pub back in the 90s - make of that what you will!

I've seen Felicity Kendall food shopping twice

MachineBee · 04/01/2020 10:12

My DCs spotted Chris Packham in Cite de l’Europe on our way back from watching a solar eclipse in Belgium. They were still at primary school and mad CP fans so just went up to him and starting telling him all about the eclipse. He was with his StepDD and really lovely. We ended up having a long chat with them because they’d also been to see the eclipse and were just as excited about it as us.

hallygore · 04/01/2020 10:36

Alistair brownlee shops at our aldi.

AhCheeses · 04/01/2020 11:16

I was at work early one sunday morning, it was very quiet, I was bored. A man walked through the door and headed towards me, I thought "oh my god, why is my dad here!?"
Stood up to greet him and realised, it wasn't my dad, it was Vic Reeves... He was lovely and I was embarrassed 😳

ShelaghDC · 04/01/2020 11:38

Ian Lavender? John Craven? Chris Evans?

katzenellenbogen · 04/01/2020 12:28

@shelaghdc if you are responding to the OP, you might want to try reading the thread.

OP found out who it was 20 minutes after posting two days ago
