What were you doing 20 years ago today?

I spent the day sleeping in readiness for working the night shift in the emergency call centre/control room of the water company where I worked. I started work at 6pm and was due to finish 6am on New year's Day (although we were stood down about 3am, so I was able to collect DH from the party he'd gone to).

@Jobstress1 what bitches! Thing is you never forget shit like that.

Sgtmajormummy · 31/12/2019 17:22

We had 18mo DS and took him to a rowdy family restaurant at 7:30 pm. We finished at about 10 and took him home as the party was just starting...

We went round to the neighbour’s garden for midnight fireworks, more bangs than flashes.
Rushed back to find my PFB was still fast asleep. SoI think at midnight I was hovering over his cot and feeling a bit weary.
Many better NYEs since then.

At my sister and her than fiance,s house party the pubs and clubs were charging extortionate prices as I recall so most people in my town at least had their own parties ,I remember getting pissed and going to bed early ,20 years on sister and said fiance are newly divorced.

AdoraBell · 31/12/2019 17:26

Central London, perched on a low roof with dozens of other people beside the Thames by Tower bridge watching the fireworks.

AlaskaElfForGin · 31/12/2019 17:26

My friend was staying with me at my flat and we went to a pub in Glasgow near where I lived. We had a bloody brilliant night. We've both had a shit year this year, so I'll send her a message tonight to remind her that that was the night she fell over a hedge into someone's garden on the way back to my flat then we ended up going to a party at their house til about 5 in the morning. Happy days.

KevinsCarter · 31/12/2019 17:26

I was 16 desperate to be at Manic Millennuim. My mother would never let me out of her sight for 5 minutes and I had no friends to go with anyway. I got the VHS afterward.
We spend it at a bonfire on a farm it was bloody cold and we were home by midnight so I was alone in my bedroom listening to the manics on my discman. Happily life got better and nye 2005 I went on a first date with now DH.

BikeRunSki · 31/12/2019 17:27

I was staying with my brother. DH (who was not yet quite H), DBro2, DNephew (age 7) and I all went up the hill behind DB1’s house with a bottle of champagne each. Even the 7 year old Blush. There was a lot left over from DSis’s wedding earlier in the year.

Busymummy16 · 31/12/2019 17:27

Pub with friends and then fireworks at Westminster- we managed to get onto Westminster bridge by my friend blagging us on as it was packed. The river of fire was a bit of a letdown 😂 but the fireworks were great! Then went back to the pub, only to find my wallet had been handed in behind the bar and nothing taken! Happy days!

Busymummy16 · 31/12/2019 17:28

And another one who would’ve loved to have seen the Manics at the millennium. Saw them
Later that year instead. Love the Manics!

Conceiving my son who was born nine months later to the day! 😊

cheesenpickles · 31/12/2019 17:29

I went to a New Year's Party with my mum and dad at a local restaurant dressed in the most insane silver two piece my mum bought me from Harrods and a white feather boa. I remember singing along to Millennium and sneaking sips of my mum's drinks when the staff weren't looking.

mizu · 31/12/2019 17:31

Ah remember this well.

Was at a party at my sister's house here in the UK - was meant to be in Bangkok meeting up with a guy I had met while teaching in Tokyo.

I left Tokyo after 2 years promising him I would meet him at Bangkok airport on new years eve. Truly meant it at the time and even purchased the ticket which I remember was £400!!

Then things changed and i got back together with a previous boyfriend!!!! Gosh, I was fickle. I got a refund for my ticket and really did try to get in touch with people at the airport to get a message to the guy waiting.

He called me on my sister's phone that evening saying he had been waiting for hours and where was I??? 😲😬😯😬

Felt terrible but what could I do??

teenagetantrums · 31/12/2019 17:32

@EdersonsSmileyTattoo! Oh my god I’ve got tingles thinking about it.
I saw many things that night I won’t forget 🤣 I’m from Scotland so only really went to the big events like Lotherton Hall etc but they were the best days of my life. I’ve got #itwillalwaysbewithyou on a slate table runner 🤣 My husband got me it as a present.

GoGoLego · 31/12/2019 17:36

I was 8 so was at my gps whilst my parents were at a party. I remember watching jools Holland in Their bedroom at midnight feeling awfully grown up that I was allowed to stay up

pinkmagic1 · 31/12/2019 17:40

I was 20 and at my mum's neighbours house party with dh who had only moved to the UK 4 months previously to be with me. We had just bought our first house and were looking forward to moving in in a few weeks time.
Happy times and everything was so full of promise. Can't believe it was 20 years ago.

pinkmagic1 · 31/12/2019 17:42

Oh, and was wearing boot cut jeans and a pink crushed velvet vest!

Anotherdayanothernight · 31/12/2019 17:43

I was running a bar restaurant in Notting Hill and we had a fancy dress party, with a lock in afterwards of course... It was a great night

DustyMaiden · 31/12/2019 17:44

Not long after DD was stillborn, felt awful. By the next new year had DS who is currently home from uni.

LickYouLikeACrispPacket · 31/12/2019 17:49
