What were you doing 20 years ago today?

I spent the day sleeping in readiness for working the night shift in the emergency call centre/control room of the water company where I worked. I started work at 6pm and was due to finish 6am on New year's Day (although we were stood down about 3am, so I was able to collect DH from the party he'd gone to).

Castle in Scotland with 30 of my closest friends. Was a challenge to organise ore-whatsapp!

leghairdontcare · 31/12/2019 16:47

Manic Street Preachers! Best New year's Eve ever. Only £30 odd for the ticket. As Nicky Wire said, they were the only people to put on a millennium event and lose money Grin

SkiingIsHeaven · 31/12/2019 16:48

Fancy dress party in a barn. I went as the millennium bug.

I had flu, I was awake for about an hour all day. Not the most thrilling night ever !

Toomuchgoingon · 31/12/2019 16:55

Spent the night in the village pub, drinking Moscow mules and homemade jelly baby vodka. Then staggered down to the village green where they had one of the beacons, and cheered the Morris dancers on. Definitely a sign of having too much to drink. Grin

I was at home with my 7 month old twin dds. My now exh had fallen asleep around 9pm and I remember feeling utterly disillusioned, dying for some human contact and having someone to hug at midnight. With all the hype of the new millennium, it felt completely flat when it happened.
It was a bloody lonely night.

Dumbledoresgirl · 31/12/2019 16:55

I was living in London with dh, a 3 year old, a 2 year old and I was 6 months pregnant with my 3rd. We went into central London in the afternoon and milled with all the crowds on the Embankment, saw the London Eye (or Milennium Wheel as it was also known - or Lemming Wheel as my son called it) still lying at 90 degrees as it was not ready in time for the Milennium, pushed our way across Waterloo Bridge with a buggy and a bump! and started home on the train by 7pm. Put the kids to bed, and then stayed up and watched the London fireworks, half on the telly and half out the window.

GinisLife · 31/12/2019 16:57

I was in Madeira on holiday. Spent the evening watching the fireworks in Funchal harbour drinking champagne from the bottle 😀

MAFIL · 31/12/2019 16:57

Yes Popup that's why I cried really. The nursing staff and some of the other junior docs kept me sane in what was a truly awful time. When I walked in and found them asleep with their party hats on and the food all unopened I was touched beyond belief.

willdoitinaminute · 31/12/2019 17:02

All night party with big group of friends. Then walked up a local hill at dawn to see the sun rise on the new millennium. There were fireworks going off for hours after midnight and even a few as we walked up the hill.

LackBladder · 31/12/2019 17:03

On a boat on the Thames and much like some PP, a large amount of class As. Stopped up directly opposite the Eye for the fireworks and then up and down to Greenwich until 5ish, then about 30 of us went back to a house party in Clapham. Absolutely amazing night, nothing will top it - the people I was with, the fun we had - and nor do I ever want it topped.

LickYouLikeACrispPacket · 31/12/2019 17:04

@EdersonsSmileyTattoo I was also at Gatecrasher at Don Valley Stadium and it was bloody amazing. Can’t believe that was 20 years ago! 😱

lanbro · 31/12/2019 17:06

I went to Newcastle Quayside, wristband entry only, can't believe it was 20 yes ago!

IndigoApple · 31/12/2019 17:08

I was 8 months pregnant, DH and I stayed in our flat and watched Edinburgh's Hogmanay on tv instead of being there. It was around the time it became more for the tourists than the locals and I've never been since. Had a glass of cava at midnight. 20 years on DD is off to Princes St later, I've just told her to take a coat 😁. I will be sitting at home watching it again but with more than one drink I hope!

Tomliboosrule · 31/12/2019 17:11

At the Millennium Dome opening ceremony drinking champagne with the Queen (and 5,000 other people...).

happypotamus · 31/12/2019 17:12

I was 18, and at a party at a friend's house. I can't believe that was 20 years ago!

delilahbucket · 31/12/2019 17:13

I was 14 😱 and at a party my friend's parents had put on for us. We stayed up until 7am, which I was very happy about because I hadn't done it before!

SmuggyMcKnobson · 31/12/2019 17:14

OH was on call (millenium bug type shit) He was working away and suggested that I brought the kids over to spend NYE in a supposedly swanky hotel. Sounded like a plan. It wasn't swanky, our room was bordering on grim and I had tonsillitis.

OH was up and out at 7am the next day, kids slept until late so we missed breakfast and I spent the rest of the day with two very miserable kids in a cold, rainy city where almost everything was shut .

TSSDNCOP · 31/12/2019 17:14

At a house party having a fancy dinner.

Tonight I will be at a house party having a fancy dinner.

I am a creature of habit.

If you ask me again on NYE 2039 I will very likely be at a house party having a fancy dinner. By then it will need to be puréed and served a lot earlier though Grin

CalleighDoodle · 31/12/2019 17:15

I was on a club 18-30 three nights in Ibiza.

mummypigx · 31/12/2019 17:15

I was 11. My parents had a big house party for their friends, my mum would have been late 30s and my dad mid 40s.

I was just excited I got to stay up till midnight!

winterinmadeira · 31/12/2019 17:16

I genuinely can’t remember - and I’m not sure if that is a good or a bad thing!

Jobstress1 · 31/12/2019 17:17

I was 14 and all my friends went to a girls house for a sleepover who didn't invite me (to be nasty). I also was recovering from flu. My parents went out so I was home alone. They all rang me at midnight a bit drunk and silly- I had to act like I wasn't upset. It was crap! I don't miss being that age!

Boxerbinky · 31/12/2019 17:20

'Cream' at the pier head liverpool! Pete Tong, Oaky and Fat Boy Slim plus if I remember rightly the Stereophonics played!! Tonight I am sitting with my nearly 3 year old and DH with a glass of vino and may pop next door if we are still up at 12 GrinGrinGrin

EdersonsSmileyTattoo · 31/12/2019 17:21

@LickYouLikeACrispPacket It was an amazing night! I seem to remember some crackpot climbing up somewhere he shouldn’t have done at one stage!

#itwillalwaysbewithyou

It’s a shame Crasher has gone down the toilet so badly recently, the way they treat the DJ’s that play for them is appalling, Scott Bond should be ashamed of himself!
