What were you doing 20 years ago today?

I spent the day sleeping in readiness for working the night shift in the emergency call centre/control room of the water company where I worked. I started work at 6pm and was due to finish 6am on New year's Day (although we were stood down about 3am, so I was able to collect DH from the party he'd gone to).

I was doing the late shift at the hotel I worked in. Then my boyfriend (now my ex husband) cooked me dinner and we watched the fireworks. I was at work again at 6am.

northernknickers · 31/12/2019 17:54

Oh it was awful 😂 Went to a house party with a friend. She knew the hosts, I didn't.

I SHOULD have been going to a posh hotel do in Manchester but I'd just split up from my 'DH' a few weeks prior after finding out he'd been having an affair, and he had the tickets!!

Lovely friend took pity on me, dragged me out, saying how fab this party was going to bet etc. It wasn't...for me 🤦‍♀️. Everyone was coupled up...my friend was being 'blind-dated' with someone and I felt like a right chump!

Gorgeous house, beautifully decorated for the occasion with twinkling lights everywhere, like something out of House And Home, catered food, and me, all sad on the sofa 😂😂 I tried, really I did, but it all got a bit much after a couple of wines. I think it would have been ok if I'd known everyone, but I didn't know anyone apart from my friend, who was trying to impress Mr I'm Big In Kitchen Design, which pretty much left me to my own devices really, making small talk with strangers.

Midnight came round, everyone is happily snogging their partners, and I'm left in the conservatory with the Labrador...so I gave him a hug and had a bit of a sob into his lovely chocolate fur. He was very understanding.

No New Year has ever been quite as bad since. Thankfully.

At a massive get-together of family & friends at BIL's house. It was a fine, mild night and the everyone's DC spent most of the time running around the garden unable to believe their luck that they were allowed to stay up. Luckily BIL lives rurally, so no neighbours to worry about. It was a great night.

I went to my dads work do. Wasn't what I planned but everyone had the flu! It was a Cabernet and a disco. It was ok but there were a lot of older people and I was 22!!

cptartapp · 31/12/2019 18:09

In London watching the fireworks with good friends.

Sgtmajormummy · 31/12/2019 18:09

RIP you sexy m.......Crown Sad

MrsPelligrinoPetrichor · 31/12/2019 18:12

I was pregnant, made roast beef then walked to the top of a nearby hill to watch the London fireworks. Dh narrowly missed being injured by a firework someone threw!!

golddustwomen · 31/12/2019 18:15

I was 7, we had a street party, can't remember much other than everyone in a circle singing and dancing. Rather with I was the op at the manics concert!!

Karmagician · 31/12/2019 18:15

I was volunteering with VSO in Ghana! Had only been there 3 months (of a 2 year stint) but both my best friend (who was cabin crew and had requested an Accra NY trip), and my boyfriend, who I'd left behind in the UK, came out to visit and we spent the evening and night in a 5-star hotel in Accra. Unfortunately all picked up food poisoning but the evening itself was great!

corduroyal · 31/12/2019 18:15

Terrible boyfriend, terrible night.

golddustwomen · 31/12/2019 18:16

Pp at the manics concert even!!

MaudBaileysGreenTurban · 31/12/2019 18:20

My then-boyfriend and I threw a party in our London flat. The evening was mainly memorable for being the night that I realised I wasn't in love with him. It took months (and a fling with an old uni boyfriend Blush) to make me finally pluck up the courage to end it, though.

He was a lovely chap and is now married with kids, highly successful and semi-famous so I guess I did him a favour in the long run Grin

It's very odd to think that was 20 years ago...

MissCalamity · 31/12/2019 18:25

At a house party with 3 friends, it was weirdly friends of the first boy I ever kissed, & one of my friends ended up sleeping with him Shock Another friend "copped off" with someone else, so about 2am myself & my other friend who hadn't pulled went to another party closer to home. There wasn't much choice at that party either Wink
I ended up getting home about 6am New Years Day. No longer speaking to the girls who we left at the party which is a shame, but life goes on.

Silverstreaks · 31/12/2019 18:26

Just to the right of the Houses of Parliament!
A group of us walked through London and were detoured via a road underpass. A very weird experience walking in a huge crowd where normally it would only be cars. Then a slow, busy, buzzing walk to get to HofP where we bumped into loads of people we knew and happily off our chops waited for the fireworks from the Millennium Eye and pontoons on the Thames. It was all beautiful and a slightly teary experience.
Afterward we took a slow walk back to Camden for a long, comfortable house party (keeping one eye on the sky for planes falling).
It was brilliant and I still remember it fondly.

Skiing in Italy.

bobsyourauntie · 31/12/2019 18:30

I spent the night in my local pub with friends, it was quieter than other years as lots of people stayed home but still good fun.

I stayed in my first house that night for the first time. It was being renovated, only had an outside loo, no heating, but I was determined to wake up there on 1 Jan 2000.

EKGEMS · 31/12/2019 18:30

Pippapotomus · 31/12/2019 18:44

In London watching the fireworks at Big Ben. It was cold, boring and no loos.

iswhois · 31/12/2019 18:50

I was 7 but I have a lot of childhood memories of nye being in the local pub getting off my face on full fat cola and panda pops so I assume I was there Grin

GiveMyHeadPeaceffs · 31/12/2019 18:56

Hogmanay in Edinburgh where I walked back to where we were staying alone because my boyfriend at the time reckoned I felt miserable because I hadn't drunk enough...spent the next 5 days in bed with actual flu and was nearly hospitalised for it. He was a such an arsehole.

ILoveMyCaravan · 31/12/2019 19:01

Cuddling my brand new baby niece ...one of the last babies to be born in 1999 !!
I was asked at midnight to be her godmother 💕
Cannot believe she’s now 20 .....

Happy memories

isabellerossignol · 31/12/2019 19:02

Spent it with friends. We had been friends for years and I never thought we'd drift apart but we did. Makes me quite sad.

moolady1977 · 31/12/2019 19:03

I was nursing my 10 week old baby boy who is now twenty and rang me earlier as he will be too drunk and I'll most likely be asleep come midnight
