Anyone there? Reports are sketchy at the moment. www.theguardian.com/uk-news/live/2019/nov/29/london-bridge-incident-police-city

OP posts:

just watchd the video dcade ago after the attempted attack of the attacker saying he wasnt a teroist and how in prison he had asked for help to chang his views as he saw they werent right but wasnt then offered any help

Passthecherrycoke · 30/11/2019 16:04

The man running away with the knife was a police officer- off duty apparently

nocoolnamesleft · 30/11/2019 16:07

The terrorist was not murdered. He committed suicide by cop.

Justaboy · 30/11/2019 18:25

That armed officer would have a very very difficult decision to make and weigh up in matter of seconds, probally less.

He would have known that the man had stabbed people. He would have known that he had a knife and some reports say he had Two knives taped to his hands so it was very difficult to disarm him.

Another report said that he did have a gun in a bag an then there was the fake vest. Now who on here has ever seen a photo of that sort of item other then on a TV programe?

I could if i wanted make something that looked very dangerous some old bog rolls painted red or grey stuffed with paper painted up and a few wires or electic flex commng out of them. Who would know if that was live or not?.

Now he could have, if desired, disabled that man with a few shots to the lower torso after all he might have held valuable intellengence that would have been worth knowing to the security services perhaps.

Now he would have also known that others were in damage range of a bomb like this and himself. He wouldnt be able to know if that was real or not

So he has to decide to shoot to kill all in a second or so.

What would you do, anyone?..

chomalungma · 30/11/2019 19:45

What would you do, anyone

There was the same discussion after Jean Charles De Menezes was shot dead. I think it's got to be very hard to shoot to disable but not kill. Especially if they are suspected to have a suicide vest one.

Taking someone alive has to be the best option. But there is often no choice but to kill someone, to prevent further loss of life.

CoolCarrie · 30/11/2019 20:21

Jean Charles death was caused by very bad intelligence, that poor man died because the police and intelligence services did a bad job. Yesterday the police did an excellent job,, however they, and the people of London were let down by the justice system, he should not have been allowed out of jail.

Passthecherrycoke · 30/11/2019 21:53

@Justaboy the point is the police don’t need to decide because they order is- potential
Explosive vest- shoot to kill.

You can’t have people doing these jobs who need to think and consider before doing things

It looked like a big bag of white powder he threw away...

TheoriginalLEM · 01/12/2019 07:19

So i read that somebody hit him with a narwhal tusk. Is it just me who is puzzled by this? Sorry if it's already been explained.

eurochick · 01/12/2019 08:07

It was apparently on the wall in Fishmonger Hall. I've read a Polish chef who worked there grabbed it and chased the guy. Others grabbed a fire extinguisher.

TheStaleBiscuitofDoom · 01/12/2019 08:09

They took the narwhal tusk off the wall of Fishmonger's Hall where the conference was being held.

Dongdingdong · 01/12/2019 08:10

I’m glad to see that Boris is already talking about ending automatic early release for prisoners if he wins the election. A big tick in my book, especially after this.

chomalungma · 01/12/2019 08:33

A big tick in my book, especially after this

And yet it's NOT in the manifesto, and he's also been a part of the Government that played a part in introducing this.

Anyone would think he's washing his hands of what his party have done and is doing a kneejerk reaction to get votes.

Scotinthenorth · 01/12/2019 08:37

holdnose

Are you Jeremy Corbyn?

Dongdingdong · 01/12/2019 08:41

And yet it's NOT in the manifesto, and he's also been a part of the Government that played a part in introducing this.

Actually, Labour was the party who introduced automatic early release in 2008, according to this:

how are they proposing to fund this? with the proposed funding cuts? have you actually read the manifesto?

chomalungma · 01/12/2019 08:41

Are you Jeremy Corbyn

And yet Corbyn has said there is no problem with what happened to the terrorist on London Bridge....

Passthecherrycoke · 01/12/2019 09:04

“I’m glad to see that Boris is already talking about ending automatic early release for prisoners if he wins the election. A big tick in my book, especially after this.”

I’m completely miffed by this. The conservatives have been in power for 9 years. If it was that important why haven’t they done it anyway by now? Confused

BovaryX · 01/12/2019 09:18

So am I. Automatic release after serving half a sentence is a fatally flawed policy. Sentencing for people determined to cause terror and carnage needs to be reviewed as a matter of urgency. The Tories have failed on this and need to focus on this if they win. But if Labour win? This failed paradigm will continue

chomalungma · 01/12/2019 09:30

It was. The Conservative party ignored most of the recommendations.

Maybe they should also look at the funding issues around the criminal justice system, the mental healthcare system, the probation service and in looking at all the issues around male violence in general.

anxioussue · 01/12/2019 09:36

They should have ended early release in the nine years they have already. Priti Patel seems to be delighted at this opportunity to gain votes but I doubt Johnson would even stoop that low. In the photos he looked devastated and she had her trademark smirk.

BovaryX · 01/12/2019 09:43

‘delighted at this opportunity?’ Hmm. By the way, Boris Johnson has announced he will scrap the early release system. Good. Crime and sentencing is an election issue and Boris J had made pledges to address the ongoing failures in his manifesto. Has Corbyn given his opinion yet about the cops shooting a terrorist?

rhubarbcrumbles · 01/12/2019 11:45

They have had 9 years. What was their excuse for not having done it sooner?

BovaryX · 01/12/2019 11:52

‘Call me Dave’ and Theresa ‘I apologize for being a Tory’ May. Both Blairites. The current Liberal status quo on crime isn’t working. The Tories should have tough on crime in their DNA
