Anyone else got this horrendous cough and cold?

Pantalaimon88 · 19/11/2019 19:51

I’ve had it since Thursday. Coughing so hard I am urging, lungs feel like they’re being squeezed and I can’t smell a thing. I also feel like I’ve been hit by a bus.

Apparently loads of people have this awful virus at the moment. Is anyone else here suffering too and can share a moan, tea and sympathy?

I've found this I sent to a friend on the 6th January, I was ill from Boxing Day
I remember going in and saying I feel like death and she said "oh that'll be the virus then"

"Swollen glands, temp, nasty virus that’s been going round and she’s lost count of how many people with it. Oh and swollen throat and oral thrush to add to the joy, on antibiotics for the throat"

Honorocarrollkelly · 20/07/2020 23:12

Just to point out that there are bad coughs/colds/flus/viruses every winter. This winter was no different.
They now know that stomach symptoms are common with Covid 19. In fact those with stomach and lung infection have less chance of survival than those with just lung. The stomach symptoms are a key sign of Covid 19. Some facts on it here.
No one on the previous thread mentions stomach symptoms, therefore less likely to be Covid 19 and more likely they all had a different bad illness? There was a very bad cough in the winter. It doesn’t mean it was Covid.

OMG....the first few posts I was properly confused, then I saw the dates.

DH is convinced we had it first week of January. Came back from a short trip abroad, Portugal & started to feel rough. Terrible sore throat, awful cough & pouring with sweat for 3 nights. Felt crap for a week after that, bought antiseptic throat spray as so sore. No snotty nose or sneezing.

I wonder.....

I thought infill testing was very narrow abs then weren't loads of tests chucked?

obviouslymarvellous · 20/07/2020 23:16

I had a cough from mid November to jan which was the worst I've ever had. It wasn't a cold. Nothing would come up it was so dry and damaged my voice. It flattened me. After 4 weeks of trying anything and everything and it getting worse- I crawled to the docs who told me I had pneumonia and needed to go to the hospital. I couldn't for various reasons but I did tell her if I got any worse I would go. She gave me the strongest tablets she could. I couldn't breathe whatsoever at night. I actually thought at one point that my time was up. It took until March this year for me to feel ok and even now when I do running or long bouts of exercise I still feel very breathy. I'm Worried in case it wasn't covid and what will happen if I do catch it... I do think though the symptoms I had match covid but I won't ever know

I thought it was a joke too until I saw the dates and flipped to the last few posts.

PicsInRed · 20/07/2020 23:22

My eyebrows full raised when I saw the dates. Makes sense though. There have been so many reports of a covid like illness in the young which preceded the wave of elderly deaths.

Zucker · 20/07/2020 23:25

Quite amazing reading this thread. It's an answer to all of those threads where people say Oh I don't know anyone that's had it. Poster after poster describing it in detail and yet as soon as it was named, no one knows anyone that's actually had it.

MrsAmaretto · 20/07/2020 23:25

My sibling was for the first time in their life ill and in bed for over a week in January/February. They were told it was a virus, possibly bronchitilitis. They work for and English nhs trust and their covid antibody test has come back positive, as have 63% of their building.

I'm not being a bitch but my sibling has a small circle of friends, no community groups, works long hours and isn't in pubs, swimming pools, gyms, visitor attractions or schools in their day to day life. Covid was circulating in the community a fuck load for them to catch it!

AnyFucker · 20/07/2020 23:29

My H had classic symptoms in December. Am convinced he had Covid.

Hollyhobbi · 20/07/2020 23:34

Don't think it's Covid as the kids were also coughing etc. I remember getting my flu injection last year and the Chemist advising me to get my daughters vaccinated too because she was just back from Australia and said the flu that they had that season was supposed to be awful.

BloodSweatAndBeers · 20/07/2020 23:40

Is it possible that it was here in November then has mutated? I've read that the virus we have here now is not the same strain that emerged from Wuhan. So might explain why people have tested negative and or death rates higher now?

GoGoGone · 20/07/2020 23:40

24 hours after I came back from China in August I came down with terrible flu. Couldn't move for 5 days and cough that lasted at least a month with terrible breathlessness. Have been joking with my friends about being patient zero!

There are loads and loads of very similar viruses though. I think it's a bit unlikely that every bug last autumn was Covid.

There are always endless cough viruses around during winter. I did a cursory search and these are the first two results.

Every year at work, the office and schools are decimated by a cough/cold/fluey virus that rattles on for weeks.

IAmReportingYouForBBQing · 21/07/2020 00:00

This is bonkers!

I think it’s the loss of smell and squeezed lungs/suspected pneumonia that’s piqued people’s interest.

Dd3 was I’ll for three months I really believe it was COVID and it’s possible that actually the people in care homes got it last.

ArthurMorgan · 21/07/2020 00:42

Another one here that was so confused before I saw the dates! In Feb my niece's and nephews all had really bad coughs / chests, the baby was horrendous with it. I caught it after that, my lungs felt like they were on fire, I couldn't breathe, I was sure it was covid at the time (did isolate) or that I had pneumonia, I'm still out of breath now at times. If it was all a coincidence, the virus we had was rampant for months before then , our primary nearly closed with it before the Xmas holidays, I remember ringing in sick for DD and the head of year saying that they're dropping like flies, if it hadn't of been the last week before holidays they either would have no students going in through illness or they'd have to close anyway. Very interesting zombie thread indeed!

Not really. There’s nothing in the genetic research of the virus that supports that. The genetic lines in Europe are mostly a different strain from those in Asia, but they originate from January and tend to lead back to the German patient 0. Although I think it was introduced a couple of other times from Singapore or China.
goose124 · 21/07/2020 06:05

Wow; this is crazy!

peonypower · 21/07/2020 06:20

Has anyone seen data from sewage studies in the UK? They've shown it was present in Italy and France before Christmas by looking at frozen sewage samples. Stands to reason it was here too.

But there ARE lots of nasty respiratory viruses every year. And coronaviruses are typically later in the winter season, peaking Jan to Mar, which fits with the excess mortality we've seen (spiking in April). But that doesn't mean it wasn't circulating in the community from autumn.

There wouldn't have been excess mortality until it got a firm hold in the 85+ group as that's where most of the deaths are.

Rebelwithallthecause · 21/07/2020 06:54

I went to a museum in London at Christmas and came back with terrible cough, sore throat, no taste or smell, fever, aches, migraines all lasting weeks.

I remember feeling so scared I would lose my baby as I’d never been that ill before

A few weeks after I had it my parents both got pneumonia and so did some friends (Young fit normally healthy 30 year olds)

chocolatesaltyballs22 · 21/07/2020 07:11

Just to add, I had stomach symptoms too. I was abroad so I put it down to the local water or something, but that along with the horrendous cough and sore throat has me convinced that I had Covid.

Patsnpons · 21/07/2020 07:21

Wow, I too was thinking why is no one picking up on the obvious symptoms till I saw the date.

alicequartz · 21/07/2020 07:37

@BabbleBee

I wonder if this year was a second wave too.
Well that's something to think about!
