A Royal Referendum - How would you vote?

Nikhedonia · 19/11/2019 01:22

I know that this wouldn't be how it would work, but please humour me Smile

If there was a referendum where the options were to either keep the Royal Family or get rid (after the Queen dies) how would you vote?

(Ignoring the fact that this isn't how it would work and if Brexit has gone like this, doing a deal with the Royal Family could be just as painful)

I'm genuinely not sure how I'd vote.

All the comments about how the pomp and ceremony of the RF set Britain apart from the rest of the world are hideously racist and ignorant. Like other countries don't have RFs which have pom and ceremony around them.

TattiePants · 21/02/2020 15:48

Definitely get rid

Lolly86 · 21/02/2020 15:49

Keep

Get rid asap!!

Topseyt · 21/02/2020 15:51

On the fence. I might lean towards keep if it could be without the likes of Prince Andrew. He is an utter plonker who has done more to damage the image of the monarchy than any of the others, in my opinion. The Queen seems rather blinkered when it comes to him.

Much more of him and I'd vote to get rid, even though I am not really anti monarchist.

I think the next generation of royals (Prince Charles, William etc.) will need to tread very carefully when the current Queen has gone. It will be a vulnerable time then, but I am sure they can see this.

At least it isn't Prince Andrew who is next in line, or I might want it gone before he got up the throne. He would be such an embarrassment.

Fourtights · 21/02/2020 15:52

Ditch - it's an outdated institution that makes no sense in the modern world. It's also cruel to the people in the Royal Family. The whole thing is ludicrous.

MsJuniper · 21/02/2020 15:57

Get rid and also abolish all titles.

MrsFogi · 21/02/2020 16:01

Get rid - pronto.

indianbackground · 21/02/2020 16:07

I’d say ditch completely or keep.

If part of the keep is tourism then I don’t think a slimmed down monarchy will have the same magic. The tourists who visit only because there is actually a King/Queen probably prefer one with the crown/long train/big wedding.

Floralnomad · 21/02/2020 16:09

Get rid and I also wouldn’t wait for the queen to die .

WingDefence · 21/02/2020 16:10

Abolish.

TheNavigator · 21/02/2020 16:15

Get rid.
If we have to keep, establish Meghan as queen, with Harry as her consort Grin

TSSDNCOP · 21/02/2020 16:18

Keep

I think it still would. Who really gave a stuff about Princess Eugenie's wedding apart from the hard-core nutters? Wills and Harry's weddings done them the non heir buggers off.
I bet just having the monarch and their family would work fine. Prince Andrew was a real cutie as a baby and the Queen looked blissfully happy. If he'd disappeared as an adult we wouldn't have had the spectacle of that cute baby turning into what he has. I'd vote severely severely slimmed downturn eventually gone.

MadisonAvenue · 21/02/2020 16:20

Get rid

7salmonswimming · 21/02/2020 16:21

If Brexit has taught us one thing, it’s that rationally extricating ourselves from a supra-national organisation/institution isn’t within our organisational capabilities.

On that basis alone, ie to save the country from a collective stress-induced heart attack, I say slim down to heirs to the throne only, in ceremonial roles, with all the country homes and palaces handed to the National Trust (only Buck Palace and a country estate like Chequers kept for the monarch), all stolen or “gifted” loot from ex-colonies returned, all private art and jewels gifted to the nation. Elizabeth, Charles, William and George, as individuals, are no more deserving of their immense, grotesque, immoral inherited wealth than any one of us posting here. They are deserving of compensation for their services to others - basically, their jobs.

So keep for an easy life, slimmed down, with restitution on a scale never before seen.

Abelino · 21/02/2020 16:23

I'd vote to get rid, but I think I'd be on the losing side!

At the very least, I'd like to see it slimmed right down to just the heir and their spouse, then their heir etc. What Harry did should be the default. I read somewhere that Charles is keen on this idea, which is promising.

GarlicSoup · 21/02/2020 16:26

Keep 👑

BarbedBloom · 21/02/2020 16:27

For now keep, but after the Queen dies, get rid. The Andrew stuff has left a bad taste in my mouth and changed my opinion

R2519 · 21/02/2020 16:29

Keep, but massively streamlined. Charles, William and his kids, no one else. I would also strip the others of their titles too. I dont think there will be a monachy in 50 years time, which means George is unlikely to be king but you never know!.

lazylinguist · 21/02/2020 16:31

Get rid. The history of the royals is what the tourists come to look at, not the current royals themselves. Why would visiting the Tower of London or looking at Buckingham Palace be any less impressive or appealing if the monarchy ended? As pp have saud, Versailles seems to do pretty well!

floffel · 21/02/2020 16:33

GET RID!

AlexaAmbidextra · 21/02/2020 16:38

Keep.

cologne4711 · 21/02/2020 16:40

Keep. Imagine Boris or Cummings as president. At least we have a known quantity with Charles and William.

TiddlestheCat · 21/02/2020 16:46

Keep. But we get to get rid of the old ones and choose new ones. There could be a big national competition. Categories could include waving, physical presentation, corgi handling, keeping one's mouth shut when facing tyrannical ignorant heads of state, ribbon cutting, crown balancing, hurdles (without sweating) and the egg and silver spoon race.
