A Royal Referendum - How would you vote?

Nikhedonia · 19/11/2019 01:22

I know that this wouldn't be how it would work, but please humour me Smile

If there was a referendum where the options were to either keep the Royal Family or get rid (after the Queen dies) how would you vote?

(Ignoring the fact that this isn't how it would work and if Brexit has gone like this, doing a deal with the Royal Family could be just as painful)

I'm genuinely not sure how I'd vote.

I think they are far better representatives / ambassadors of Britain to the world than our politicians

Yes, nothing brings a more positive representation of a country than a prince who associates with convicted paedophiles. Confused

AuchAyeTheNo · 20/11/2019 21:49

Get rid of the lot of them and all the hangers on.

Keep the palaces and have them open to the public for history etc but it really should all end with Queenie.

Figgygal · 20/11/2019 21:52

I'd keep

Keep, but streamlined.

If we had a presidential-style election for the post I worry about the type of person that would put themselves forward for the job (Boris, for example). I think I prefer the concept of duty rather than naked ambition!

AnneElliott · 20/11/2019 22:56

Keep but would streamline them.

ZenNudist · 20/11/2019 22:58

Get rid

bloodynamechange · 20/11/2019 22:58

Get rid of them.

InfiniteCurve · 20/11/2019 23:00

Keep.
The Royal family is part of our history and connect us to our national past

Royallyscrewed · 20/11/2019 23:02

Keep but cut some of the dead wood away (Andrew, his kids, Edward, the michaels of Kent et al).
I have a soft spot the the DofE and the princes and I quite admire Anne’s refusing her children titles

Gallivespian · 21/11/2019 06:37

@ChicCroissant, if you have an elected HoS with minimal political power and the salary of a senior civil servant, I can assure you that a career politician like Boris will not have the remotest interest. And the great thing is that you get to choose, they can be impeached, and their term of office is finite.

purplepalace · 21/11/2019 06:41

Get rid

Get rid after the Queen dies and replace with an elected non-executive President like they have in Ireland, Germany, India, Israel for example.

ChardonnaysDistantCousin · 21/11/2019 07:33

If you streamline the monarchy then it might be better value for money than an el cited head of state, because then you have elections and keeping the head of state, and security and pension for the previous ones and so on. Keep a lean monarchy, keep the tradition, but get better value for money.

VolcanionSteamArtillery · 21/11/2019 07:55

If you streamline the monachy you still dont get rid of Charles and Camilla...

FoamingAtTheUterus · 21/11/2019 08:38

Keep. They generate millions and do a lot of good work.

People can bluster on about them being scroungers etc but I think they've sacrificed a lot. Freedom being one of those things. I'd absolutely hate to live their life.

BertrandRussell · 21/11/2019 08:42

“ If you streamline the monachy you still dont get rid of Charles and Camilla...”
You would if you streamlines it my way.

Whattodoabout · 21/11/2019 08:42

Get rid.

Dowser · 21/11/2019 08:42

After all the events that have unfolded over not just the last few days but over the decades are you still prepared to have the wool pulled over your eyes.
I’m not.
And even though andrew has been told to step down from public duties I’m not happy at having to pay towards His the protection

ChardonnaysDistantCousin · 21/11/2019 09:29

I like Camilla.

keepingbees · 21/11/2019 09:34

Keep. But I think it should be streamlined to senior royals only. Minor royals should be self sufficient and not have tax payer funding.

Armi · 21/11/2019 09:36

Keep.

NotQuiteUsual · 21/11/2019 09:41

I'd work them out and me in as Queen.

Every Friday afternoon would be disco day, where we all stop what we're doing and show everyone out groovy moves. Cinema tickets would be capped at £5 a ticket.

A vote for me is a vote for having a right laugh.

Whoops75 · 21/11/2019 09:44

Keep

After the queen dies the royal family goes from 30 to 10. That is enough to keep the pomp but at a lower cost.

noodlenosefraggle · 21/11/2019 09:48

I don't mind Charles and Camilla. Let's face it they cant do anything. Their role is all ceremonial as it is. All that guff about Hm getting her red boxes every day. She could chuck it all on the fire and it wouldn't make a blind bit of difference. I'd be fine with a very slimmed down monarchy, with one state residence. Get rid of the rest. All their problems are caused by their lives of unearned privilege and sense that they are better than the rest of us due to their birth. The sad thing is how many 'commoners' think the same. That's why people blame Meghan and Fergie for all the RF's ills. They cant believe that the Royals are humans beings, no different from the rest of us, not 'Born to rule'
