A Royal Referendum - How would you vote?

Nikhedonia · 19/11/2019 01:22

I know that this wouldn't be how it would work, but please humour me Smile

If there was a referendum where the options were to either keep the Royal Family or get rid (after the Queen dies) how would you vote?

(Ignoring the fact that this isn't how it would work and if Brexit has gone like this, doing a deal with the Royal Family could be just as painful)

I'm genuinely not sure how I'd vote.

OP, have you been keeping score?

I'm another who thinks you should have made it an AIBU with a vote button!

The other day I looked on the Royal Diary to see whether Andrew had any events booked for the next 6 weeks - nothing. William, Kate, Harry and Meghan also had nothing (the latter two we know as they're on a break). Edward and Sophie had a few things booked in as did the queen. Anne had the most. Charles and Camilla one or two between now and Xmas.

Anne had 32 up until 15 December. Nothing for William and kate. What a cushy life. Maybe that'll change but there's nothing in the diary.

annielouise · 20/11/2019 18:30

So yes, as I voted before - get rid.

MonsteraDeliciosa · 20/11/2019 18:36

Princess Anne has always worked harder than most of the rest of them.
I recall reading, many years ago, about royals’ workload and civil list payments (as it was then) and Anne got less money but undertook many more engagements than her brothers.

Maybe the crown should pass to her?

OnlyFoolsnMothers · 20/11/2019 19:29

I think of the royals like religion- from a rationale perspective I agree with the practical arguments for banishing. However they bring some joy and comfort to people, whether supporting charities, opening a hospital or visiting the sick I think they are an institution that I do love about Britain

TSSDNCOP · 20/11/2019 19:41

Keep

Vapatea · 20/11/2019 20:03

As a spread better I think we need a back up in case the politicians mess up so I would say let them stay

InTheWalls · 20/11/2019 20:06

Keep. And I'm a Labour voter 🙈

BubblesBuddy · 20/11/2019 20:09

That would be a hard choice! Andrew or Boris? Both could be prefaced with Randy!

GiveMyHeadPeaceffs · 20/11/2019 20:19

Get rid.

Marigold101 · 20/11/2019 20:21

Get rid. Asap.

MadeForThis · 20/11/2019 20:52

Get rid.

KenDodd · 20/11/2019 20:58

I think reluctantly keep. Couldn't stand president Boris.

TheFlis12345 · 20/11/2019 21:03

Keep. I think they are far better representatives / ambassadors of Britain to the world than our politicians.

IncrediblySadToo · 20/11/2019 21:05

KEEP

I love the traditions and I do feel it adds an extra layer of protection against the buffoons

But also it brings a phenomenal amount of tourism & money into the country

IncrediblySadToo · 20/11/2019 21:06

And YES

They’re DEFINITELY better ambassadors than the politicians

twinkledag · 20/11/2019 21:16

Get rid of them

Thedonkeyhouse · 20/11/2019 21:27

I would vote to abolish the monarchy. It's not personal to the individuals involved, I just don't like the concept.

It's a complete farce now. The idea that they are some how more special then us just by virtue of who their parents are is ridiculous when we know so much about them and about what goes on in reality.

I also think it's a bit cruel really. I know it's a privileged life in many ways but it's also a gilded cage - and it's difficult for individuals to leave because leaving would mean turning their back on their family to some extent. It's not like being a normal celebrity where you can just fade into the background if you chose to stop playing the game.

There isn't a lot of research to back up the idea that it's royalty that brings tourism to the UK, so there is no point in keeping them on that score. If you think about it, Versailles has tourists too and that Royal Family has been extinct for ages. Same for The Pyramids and Machu Picchu.
