A Royal Referendum - How would you vote?

Nikhedonia · 19/11/2019 01:22

I know that this wouldn't be how it would work, but please humour me Smile

If there was a referendum where the options were to either keep the Royal Family or get rid (after the Queen dies) how would you vote?

(Ignoring the fact that this isn't how it would work and if Brexit has gone like this, doing a deal with the Royal Family could be just as painful)

I'm genuinely not sure how I'd vote.

Havrnt read the whole thread but I don't see hoe anyone could vote either way, until we knew exactly what we would be replacing them with. Otherwise it could just turn into yet another Brexit clusterfuck.

vikkimoog · 21/02/2020 16:53

sirching they have no political power at all so they wouldn't need replacing

The most obvious replacement, if needed would be a ceremonial president, like the Irish one, and completely different to 'President Blair/Johnson etc'.

Keep but really scale of down. Obviously they are family to each other but only the direct line should be working royals. However, Anne and Sophie work hard so it is difficult to decide.

LuluJakey1 · 21/02/2020 17:37

Keep but rationalise. Only Monarch and heir and his/her heir to have HRH and Prince/Princess. No other titles, money or houses/estates to be given at all. If any additional members wish to work for the Royal Firm they should work 37 hours a week and be paid a salary in keeping with a job where there are no qualifications required. Minimum expenses.

LuluJakey1 · 21/02/2020 17:38

I certainly would not want a President.

Oh. I have just finished a book all about their constitutional powers which were much wider ranging than I thought, and quite scary how unaccountable they are and how little the public know of their powers. I thought it was reliable. It was by Norman Baker. The powers that he talked about are ones I would prefer not to be given to the Prime Minister. A President may be ok though.

BrightlightsSmallvillage · 21/02/2020 18:06

Keep. I think the way Britain has been able to cling to it's historic traditions and make them work for us in a modern world of diplomacy and tourism is well worth it.

Having a live royal family definitely bolsters foreign interest in visiting the UK and I prefer the stability of our symbolic, non-partisan head of state. I hope the Royal family continues to work hard at being a unifying force across the Commonwealth, particularly at this time.

I also think the way we are able to criticize our institutions without too much acrimony is an undervalued aspect of British society, and stems from such stability.

If we want to fight white, monied privilege I'd rather we concentrate on ending it's dominance in our elected institutions.

Noodlenosefraggle · 21/02/2020 18:10

Their constitutional powers are restricted by convention, so virtually everything they do is on the advice of the Government. They could, I suppose decide to overturn convention and use all their parts. That's a massive reason to get did. We don't know who we'll get in the future. Lovely little George could be a terrible adult and we would have no choice but to put up with him.

x2boys · 21/02/2020 18:11

I'm a bit meh about the whole royal family ,but saying saying we did get rid of them what would happen to them? Presumably they ( the most important member ,s at least) have enough personal wealth to continue to live a fairly privileged life style ? And world wide I think there would still be enough interest in them for them to be invited to grand events ,give talks ,open events etc so would their live,s really change much for them?

He clearly abused (an) underage girl(s), the whole country now knows and because of who he is nothing will happen. Wtf is up with that?

That's not what he's been accused of. They weren't underage in the territories and it's trafficking that's actually the issue here. Obviously horrific, too, of coures.

But he hasn't 'clearly' been proved to do anything yet. He hasn't even been charged. I don't like the man but there is such a thing as innocent until proved guilty.

Off with their heads... Metaphorically.

It's deeply weird to prostrate yourself before people just because of who their parents are.

derxa · 21/02/2020 18:37

I repeat.Keep them. I love old fashioned people like the Queen and Princess Anne

reluctantbrit · 21/02/2020 18:40

Depends. Would the PM be “promoted” to a president figure like in the US? Then a big NO. I think there should be a head of state separate from the government.

We have a president in Germany, elected in a very strange manner but he is, similar to the queen, a purely representative figure. Less public engagements though, lots of people never see him, there is no ribbon cutting etc.

I think cutting down the actual royal family like the Swedish king did is a better idea.
