Would you vote Labour if you earned over £80,000?

NoMansGE · 15/11/2019 10:52

When doing more research on labours tax policies DH and I noticed that this starts from salaries of £80,000. This would effect our household as that is DHs salary. We both agree with their campaign for 'no more billionaires'.. but we aren't billionaires. We are a normal family who live a comfortable but far from luxury lifestyle. We're both torn how to vote, as it would usually be labour.

@Answerthequestion this thread is a great case in point. See how it is just completely ignored by the vast majority of posters. they do not give a damn. And people wonder how the Holocaust could have happened.

oldwhyno · 15/11/2019 12:16

This is where labour always go wrong. They talk a good game about the mega wealthy and then simply target the middle class.

There's plenty of "oh, but higher earners should pay more" on this thread. Of course they should, don't state the obvious. Higher earners already do pay more. The question is whether they should pay even more.

For too long we've let Labour AND the Tories draw the economic line that divides us in the wrong place. And we always end up talking about the income of working people, not the huge wealth of an elite minority.

weymouthswanderingmermaid · 15/11/2019 12:19

@DuchessMustard and @Answerthequestion a genuine question; please can you educate me on the anti-semitism issue in the Labour Party? I'm not being goady. This morning I was trying to search for info after reading about the open letter from John Le Carre etc.
I have Jewish friends who are Labour and JC supporters, who say it's a smear campaign.
Can you direct me to some objective data / information?

ClownsandCowboys · 15/11/2019 12:19

Yes I would because I want to live in a civilised society. All those countries with higher taxes are happier.

I'm not a high tax payer, but I would happily pay more tax on my salary.

missfliss · 15/11/2019 12:20

To the OP.

Yes I would.

nowlook · 15/11/2019 12:21

@Velveteenfruitbowl

I don't believe that many, if any, achieve high earnings other than through privilege of some kind.

Just my view though. You may be the exception that proves the rule (or debunks the theory).

Ijustwanttoretire · 15/11/2019 12:22

You are not a normal family on a normal wage if your husband earns £80K.

^This

Damntheman · 15/11/2019 12:23

I'd be interested in the same thing mermaid because I also struggle to find anything objective and hear both ends of the opinion spectrum from Jewish people.

That said, the Tory party's Islamophobia is pretty out there for all to see but apparently that's ok so long as JC doesn't get in?

LunchBoxPolice · 15/11/2019 12:27

Oh to be a “normal” family on 80k Hmm

BlueCornsihPixie · 15/11/2019 12:27

I would, I don't think I can sit here moaning about how shit the country is, how the NHS is crumbling, food banks etc and not pay more tax. I earn 70k, but likely to earn over 80 in the next couple of years and to be perfectly honest I have plenty of money, so it's bs to say you are just a normal family on 80k. You aren't. You might not be mega rich, but you are certainly a hell of a lot more comfortable than the majority of families.

I think as well all the 'i would have to leave if Labour increased taxes' is total bollocks. Why? It's not like your going to starve to death, you just want more money. It's not about having to it's about wanting to. At least admit that.

BoogleMcGroogle · 15/11/2019 12:29

I would never vote for Labour led by Corbyn and his cronies, but the fact that we would be £721 a month poorer is not the main reason for this.

His economic model ( including seizing of private assets) is preposterous in the context of a globalised economy.
The economy will take the double hit of a shitty Brexit and Corbyn's daft leftist attempts at running the country. It will be a disaster for business, which he views as nothing but a cash cow.
Labour's Brexit policy is a joke and Corbyn's a eurosceptic.
Corbyn has no credibility on the foreign stage. It would just be embarrassing.
I hate his scapegoating, divisive style of politics. He's made it quite clear what he thinks of families like mine ( both ethnically and economically like mine).
He's horribly illiberal. I believe in protecting the individual against the tyranny of the majority, and that includes radical socialism, including protecting those who are members of religious minorities.

So no, not voting Labour here, despite hugely respecting some individual Labour MP's had having always been a left-leaning liberal.

DuchessMustard · 15/11/2019 12:32

@Damntheman and @weymouthswanderingmermaid you could start with the front page of the Jewish Chronicle begging non Jews not to elect an anti semite, or the poll showing that 87% of british jews known Corbyn is antisemitic.

When I'm on my laptop I'll post more links

And no, it's not ok to be islamophobic either and I would never vote for a party that was institutionally racist against any minority group.

underneaththeash · 15/11/2019 12:32

I voted labour under Tony Blair and was earning over £80,000. We earn well over that now and I would consider voting for a centrist/left Labour Party however......

I wouldn't vote for Jeremy Corbyn if I earned 80p. He's a dangerous bigoted communist.

GrumpyHoonMain · 15/11/2019 12:32

Traditionally Labour has preferred to tax the 32-100k bracket far more disproportionately than the Tories. Yes tax needs to be focussed on people who are truly high earners like OP’s DH but in reality a lot of these people are able to hide behind complex tax rules and always will. It’s the people who get paid via PAYE but don’t qualify for benefits that get hit the hardest.

In reality to make me even think about voting for Labour I would want to see what benefits I can obtain. I am sick of being taxed to the gills but then not be able to get anything back - yes the poorest in society need our help but when benefit rises are higher than salary rises (which they were during successive Labour governments) you know that society has failed. To get my vote they would need to target childcare and other ‘nice to have’ benefits to people who work and don’t obtain benefits.

mbosnz · 15/11/2019 12:33

I'm not voting for a bunch of Anti-Semites with a person I find completely untrustworthy at the helm.

I'm not voting for a bunch of Islamophobes with a person I find completely untrustworthy and utterly revolting at the helm.

I'm screwed really, aren't I?

Answerthequestion · 15/11/2019 12:34

@weymouthswanderingmermaid

Luciana Berger needed protection at her own parties conference because she was at the receiving end of anti semitism

Ruth Smeeth was attacked by her own party as she was Jewish

John Mann’s children were subject to abuse as a non Jew he supported the Jewish community

Louise ellman and Luciana Berger we’re subject to votes of no confidence in their constituencies - co-incidence they are both Jewish Liverpool labour MP’s

The mural which JC says he didn’t realise was anti Semitic

The online trolling and vile anti semitism which Jewish Jewish supporting MP’s were subject to especially on Twitter

The lack of action by the Labour Party in dealing with anti Semitic complaints

The appalling chakrabati report

It’s not that these things happened, they will happen, there have always been anti semites but it’s the lack of urgency and attempt to deal with them by the Labour Party.

And it’s only on MN where everyone has Jewish friends who think JC is the bees knees. There is a very very serious concern in the Jewish community. The letter yesterday from John LeCarre et al was amazing and I applaud them. The Jewish chronicle which is a mainstream in offensive newspaper too the unprecedented action of appealing to non Jews not to vote labour on its front page last week.

Please don’t dismiss this, it’s a very very serious issue and it’s a threat to the Jewish community of this country.

DuchessMustard · 15/11/2019 12:34

@weymouthswanderingmermaid

I have Jewish friends who are Labour and JC supporters, who say it's a smear campaign.
Funny, because I live in the heart of the jewish community, in the most jewish constituency in the uk, and I haven't heard one single Jewish person express this view

Does your username indicate where you live?

DuchessMustard · 15/11/2019 12:36

Also can I say thank you from the bottom of my heart to those people who have principles and will not vote for an antisemitic party even though it won't directly impact them. It means so much to us.

missyB1 · 15/11/2019 12:37

Our family income is over 80k we’ve always voted Labour, but simply because Lib Dem are promising to stop Brexit we will vote for them this time.

Passthecherrycoke · 15/11/2019 12:37

@Velveteenfruitbowl you use loads of service and will use more in the future

So disappointing so see so many posters whose husbands earn over £80k talking about what “we” will pay Sad

Not many people warning over £80k will leave @sunglasses123. We’re not Richard Branson. I don’t speak any languages, understand any other cultures, I have family here, children in school, a mortgage etc etc.

flowerycurtain · 15/11/2019 12:37

@leckford had it right.

Anyone one with any real wealth will just make sure they earn £79 999. They're the people should be paying more tax not the normal people on a salary.

I would vote for my local labour candidate but not with Corbyn in charge. If he won I would also leave the country.

GrumpyHoonMain · 15/11/2019 12:38

@mbosnz - Labour is equally as anti-Hindu and anti-Sikh as it is anti-semetic. Local Labour councils in Leicester, for example, are far more likely to approve the building of new mosques than new temples / gurudwaras even in predominately Hindu / Sikh areas.

But then the Tories are no better.

This in part explains why a lot of the ‘brown’ vote for BNP / UKIP / BP comes from disenfranchised Hindu and Sikh people. The only reason why they haven’t made bigger inroads is because of the skinhead racists that still populate these parties.

mbosnz · 15/11/2019 12:38

Also can I say thank you from the bottom of my heart to those people who have principles and will not vote for an antisemitic party even though it won't directly impact them. It means so much to us.

It's deeply disturbing that it's been so little time and yet it seems that history is starting to repeat itself.

Passthecherrycoke · 15/11/2019 12:39

@DuchessMustard a Jewish woman was saying similar on question time (from Glasgow) last week, but it’s not an opinion I’ve heard much before

itwaseverthus · 15/11/2019 12:40

The labour party is full of anti-semites so I would not vote for them on that basis alone. I am not Jewish and even I know how wrong that is. Why on earth are we talking about the tax when this issue is so bloody relevant and terrifying?
