Would you vote Labour if you earned over £80,000?

NoMansGE · 15/11/2019 10:52

When doing more research on labours tax policies DH and I noticed that this starts from salaries of £80,000. This would effect our household as that is DHs salary. We both agree with their campaign for 'no more billionaires'.. but we aren't billionaires. We are a normal family who live a comfortable but far from luxury lifestyle. We're both torn how to vote, as it would usually be labour.

@Passthecherrycoke It's bullshit. He/she was called out on their use of antisemitic stereotypes and has tried to wrap it up in some imaginary experiences. Perhaps they know one or two non-white Jews and think that gives them the right to employ age-old racist abuse.

The other person who claims to have 'loads of Jewish friends who say it's all a smear campaign' is just trotting out one of the standard Labour lines, word for word. At least the one about Burmese and Arab Jews (!) is a bit more imaginative.

You're right that there are hardly any of us in the country - there will be a lot less if Corbyn ever gets power. I've never seriously considered emigrating in my life - I'm a third-generation Londoner & have always felt completely part of London - but the rise of antisemitism, encouraged by Corbyn & enthusiastically taken up by a lot of his followers, is making me reconsider that for the first time in 40 years. Sad

Passthecherrycoke · 15/11/2019 13:10
Sad
Cookerybookaddict · 15/11/2019 13:10

Yes, because I actually care about other people and not just myself.

Me too - we care deeply about our Jewish friends, so there's absolutely no way we'll vote Labour with Corbyn in charge. I'm actually quite shocked how many people on this thread seem to completely indifferent to the antisemitism in the current Labour party.

Passthecherrycoke · 15/11/2019 13:11

They won’t get in though, you know that? I don’t want the tories either but labour won’t get in

DuchessMustard · 15/11/2019 13:12

@AlphaBravoCharlieDelta yes - the Canvey Island incident was only reported in the Mirror, Sun, Daily Mail, BBC, and Huffington Post. Not a word in the Guardian, Independent, Times or Telegraph. I cannot believe it has come to this, graffiting swastikas and 'Jews go home' is now apparently just part of life here.

The synagogue in Brighton also had either blood or red paint thrown on it , which was also barely reported.

Your husband is absolutely right. Corbyn isn't just an antisemite. He's also utterly on the wrong side in every conflict you can imagine - he supports the dictators in Syria, Bolivia, Venezuela, Russia, and is an active supporter of the worst of the Iranian regime. He's an unbelievable liability. His foreign policy would be a disaster beyond imagining.

Best wishes to you and your husband. The links between the Jewish, Muslim and Christian communities give me some hope.

DuchessMustard · 15/11/2019 13:13

@Passthecherrycoke I really, really, really hope you're right. I'm not voting Tory either. What a shit situation we are all in.

@Cookerybookaddict thank you x

DryIce · 15/11/2019 13:16

This argument really winds me up! Do the majority of people really vote for what they think will personally put a few extra pennies in their own account each month? What a selfish and blinkered approach to politics, no wonder this country is in such a state.

I vote for the party whose manifesto I believe benefits the country the most. I earn more than that figure and if I was minded to vote Labour it wouldn't stop me, because I genuinely don't think voting is about the individual to that specific degree.

Besides, even if you are purely self focussed, stripping money from public services to give to tax cuts doesn't really help you unless you're an offshore account level mega rich. I'd have to save an awful lot on my taxes to cover full private health insurance for when the NHS fails (so, soon...), private school for my children when the state education levels etc

Passthecherrycoke · 15/11/2019 13:23

Absolutely drylce. It Amazes me the number of people who vote based on what it will do for them. I vote based on the best deal for the most vulnerable in our society, backed up my good deals for the nhs/ schools/ transport. I barely notice the effect of a tax policy on my pay.

This.

My DH earns more than £80k, but he is European, so despite contributing a huge amount in taxes, he can't actually vote in general elections. If he could, he would vote Labour.

Neither of us would ever vote Tory even if we were millionaires. We are both naturally Labour/Green voters. I did have a brief spell as a Lib Dem supporter but it didn't last long!

thecatsthecats · 15/11/2019 13:32

Drylce

Well said.

A guy in my office was holding forth on how his dad had 'made himself a bit of money' and was 'always a true Labour supporter'... but was now looking at the best way to protect the money he'd made and would vote Conservative as it was in his best interests.

This was the same man who kicked up an almighty fuss when his son got into an undesirable school to get him moved, his family in full voiced support behind him...

BUT YEAH, VOTE FOR THE SAME PARTY THAT HAVE SUSTAINED REAL TERM SPENDING CUTS ON SCHOOLS FOR THE PAST DECADE YOU FUCKNUTS.

MrsMaiselsMuff · 15/11/2019 13:35

Not sure if it's already been posted, but this calculator shows how much any tax increases would affect you. If you earn £85K a year, you'll pay less than £5 extra a week.

calculate.forlabour.com/

My higher earning friends and family have no problem with it.

No one is ignoring the antisemitism issue, but most of us can keep it in perspective. It is a societal issue, and it is far more prevalent amongst those with far right views.

I have previously offered to report any Labour members that posters know to be antisemitic, and offered for MN members to message me with any information they want looking into. I didn't receive one message. Which makes me think, not that it doesn't exist (it does), but that certain people have far more interest in shouting about it than actually taking action.

Dongdingdong · 15/11/2019 13:38

I don't believe that many, if any, achieve high earnings other than through privilege of some kind.

Well, that's a load of rubbish for starters. I know several people who are high earners and came from a very ordinary background - state school followed by university in one case and no uni in the other two. They're just very bright and had the personalities to go far in life.

I would be happy to see high earners pay more tax though. Even with the sizeable amount of tax they pay currently, I know my friends' take-home pay is absolutely enormous compared to the average.

totally!!!!!!!!!! Any enemy of the UKs is a friend of Corbyns

noblegiraffe · 15/11/2019 13:45

The Labour tax calculator is bollocks. Their own optimistic figures think that this tax will raise £4.5 billion.

This is less than what they’ve promised the NHS, let alone anything else.

So where is the rest of the money coming from?

Dongdingdong · 15/11/2019 13:49

Glad to see this:

www.theguardian.com/politics/2019/nov/14/concerns-about-antisemitism-mean-we-cannot-vote-labour

I'm amazed that anyone can countenance voting Labour now.

Dongdingdong · 15/11/2019 13:50

Pressed send too early. I wanted to add that I would have voted Labour but will now be voting Lib Dem - and I'm sure there are many others like me.

CendrillonSings · 15/11/2019 13:51

I wouldn’t vote Labour if the liars promised to pay me 80K! Grin

noblegiraffe · 15/11/2019 13:53

Mega twitter thread of over 125 elected Labour officials displaying antisemitism, including posts on social media.

Warning: upsetting and contains holocaust denial from the start.

MarieG10 · 15/11/2019 13:54

@Passthecherrycoke

Btw Marie you don’t pay 60% tax over £50k, your amounts are all wrong. I think you might be thinking of people paying into pensions so they can still get child benefit

No I'm not wrong as yet you are correct. It includes the high j come charge on child benefit fr two children. Basically, hit £50k earning for one person, then for every £1000 you earn over that amount up to an income of £60K you will pay £600 in tax.

I don't think it is just borderline. I know people feeding a lot into their pension to avoid the tax as is so high, better to save it and get tax relief.

However, reflects the shit system introduced by Osborne and lads of people as not well organised as my friends and they are getting fined for not doing self assessment t etc and laying the charge

Passthecherrycoke · 15/11/2019 13:57

Sorry Marie I don’t quite understand your post but the tax rate from £50k to £150k is 40%

The highest income tax rate anyone pays in the U.K. is 45%

CornishMaid1 · 15/11/2019 13:58

I could not vote for Labour, regardless of this policy. Perhaps with a more central left leader and position I could, but the policies are too far to the left for me. I also could not support a party with strong anti-Semitic leanings (which I really do not understand - I understand it happens but just cannot understand how anyone can be anti-Semitic).

The problem for Labour is that they do not target the correct people with their policies. They had the policy of changing council tax to a garden tax, which would cause issues for people in more rural areas who are more likely to be affected than people in flats in London with no garden! They are now targeting billionaires, which is great, but that is not who is actually going to be affected.

The rich earn enough to be able to fiddle their income and assets to cut on tax. They want to tax businesses more which is great in theory, but businesses will not want to make less money to will put prices up and/or cut jobs which will affect the poorer in society. They will instead hit the 'middle earners' as they are more likely to be employed so are easier to get money from through PAYE.
