Would you vote Labour if you earned over £80,000?

When doing more research on labours tax policies DH and I noticed that this starts from salaries of £80,000. This would effect our household as that is DHs salary. We both agree with their campaign for 'no more billionaires'.. but we aren't billionaires. We are a normal family who live a comfortable but far from luxury lifestyle. We're both torn how to vote, as it would usually be labour.

Yes, people move across the country away from elderly parents because they can't afford to live in the South East.

Works the other way too. Loads of young people move away from the regions to London/SE because that's where the good jobs are. The "brain drain" away from rural areas such as the Lake District is very well documented which leaves a vacuum for Holiday homes and retired people etc in the smaller towns and villages due to there being virtually no employment above nmw jobs.

what I don't understand if the increase in taxes only affect the top 5% why isn't Labour more popular

Because a lot of those earning under that don't trust Labour with the economy, and don't believe it'll only be the top 5% who end up worse off.

Yes

Because Labour are lying about it. We would have to be terminally stupid to believe that Labour could raise an extra 83 billion a year in direct taxes and borrow hundreds of billions more without fucking up the economy for the 95% as well!

£80k is not a normal family salary especially for one member of the household ... I think you need to realise where that extra tax will be put and who will be benefiting from it. Because I'm pretty sure you will benefit from it as well.
It's also based on the amount you earn OVER £80K and not just reaching that amount. So someone who is paid £100k will be taxed more then someone earning just over £80k.

I have never understood why the less well off chose to receive less of the pie by voting Tory, I'm sure the wealthy really appreciate their support. wink

Partly because the right wing press owned by billionaires has done a good job of repeating lies so often that they become 'truth', so despite how much money the tories have pissed up the wall on Brexit or how much government debt has increased, or council had to sell off assets for short term gain but long-term loss, they repeat the mantra that the tories are better for the economy, and that 'the economy' is more important than the people who suffer directly or indirectly under tory policies.

What is the point of a 'strong' economy if it is not serving the needs of people, all people, not just those who are already rich. If the economy is not working for people then it is the system that needs to change.

Both of us together earn less than your dh OP, and I consider us comfortable. You must be so cosy in your corner of the world.

Because whilst they will be taxing the top 5% they are not the only ones who will have an increased tax bill.

As the married couples tax allowance is going to be abolished then even those poorer couples that Labour seems to think need helping will be getting in less money.
