What was your salary when you were under 25 (what job were you doing?) and what do you do now?

OP posts:
Coldemort · 12/11/2019 21:42

@Angie6868 dont. The higher tax band starts at 50k.
Only 13% of workers earn above this level - and these are disproportionately men.
I'm never sure if mumsnet is skewed towards high paying professionals, or full of wannabe bullshit trolls - but either way these threads flush them out.

MermaidDreams83 · 12/11/2019 21:48

Early 20's £13,500
Now at age 36 £35k

And I still live hand to mouth 🤔 must grow up 😆

Stayawayfromitsmouth · 12/11/2019 21:48

Age 22 started on £14k in architecture
Age 32 finished on £26.5k and became a Sahm.
A bit shit really for all the years study and experience.
I would not recommend the career unless you are a friend of one of the old boys.

transformandriseup · 12/11/2019 21:51

Age 20 £7000 apprentice
Age 30 £20000 accounts assistant

orangeteal · 12/11/2019 22:00

@Stayawayfromitsmouth I'm so surprised by that, I thought it would be really well paid.

ninnypoo · 12/11/2019 22:02

I'm 25 now and earn £38k (as of this month) as a FT teacher in inner London.

Springfern · 12/11/2019 22:12

5 years ago IDVA £21,000(London). Now £14,000 PhD student (Brighton) ....urrrrg

DrCoconut · 12/11/2019 22:18

Then: £10k ish. Now £12k. I've been part time around children. I'm Shock at £42k for university lecturing. I'm in CBHE and the going rate is about £30k for full time. No wonder people assume I have more money than I actually have.

ICouldBeVotingTactically · 12/11/2019 22:26

I think Prosecco wins the thread:
Teacher in 1960s, less than £1000 - yes, you heard that - less than £1000 a year....
Hope you've retired from teaching now!!

Saturday job: £4.20 an hour when I Ieft, aged 17, to go to uni.
First post-uni job, with the civil service - about £4K, a lifetime ago.
Now in uni admin - about £40K (retiring soon, yay!)

ForestDad · 12/11/2019 23:10

Age 13 Paper Round £1/day (30mins work)
Teenager Shop Assistant £3ish/hr
Bars £5ish/hr
Age 22 post-Uni Military Officer starting £28k
Now mid 30s Pilot £75k having left Services a few years ago.
I've got by on a small budget for a few years, I have more money now than I know what to do with which is brilliant.
Makes life easier but doesn't make happiness. Most things that make me happy are free/cheap.

Joerev · 13/11/2019 07:28

I worked in a nightclub at 18. Made £24,000

At 21 I was working in the music industry making £50k

I’m a sahm now. So nothing.

graziemille567 · 13/11/2019 07:32

In early 20's I was warning £14k. 10 years later I earned 21k (in social work type environment, so never amazing salaries!). Now I work in a country where wages are much lower (gave up work in the UK when DH got job abroad) so the equivalent is roughly £9k for part time hours. This is the mid range here, so not an unusual amount to earn for the work I do. It goes a long way here compared to back in the UK at least!

alwayscauseastir · 13/11/2019 07:39

Age 19 £17k NHS Admin
Age 32 £47K NHS Assistant Director

I could have probably been higher than that now but I've had two kids in between, which I wouldn't change.

BreastedBoobilyToTheStairs · 13/11/2019 09:12

Early twenties - between £16-19k (pro rated for a while when I was studying part time). I was working as a paralegal up north, although I also received a bonus depending on my performance. That could be anything from a few hundred pounds to a few thousand (most in my early 20s was about £2k).

Now - 28 and on £38k as a solicitor in the same city/firm.

Cerealkillers · 13/11/2019 09:18

Aged 21 £9,609
Age 47 in the same company £58,000

Been promoted 4 times, once more is a possibility so I'm here all being well until I can afford to retire.

Thirtyrock39 · 13/11/2019 09:23

First job out of uni was ups call centre and think was about £12000- absolutely hated that job chained to a phone for 8 hours of complaints and had to ask permission to go to the loo
Then was a teacher started on 17000 I think (2001) which seemed loads at the time - had own house, two weeks in Greece with mates every year etc ...since having kids I'm doing a job that is low paid - nhs band 3- but one that is family friendly and generally enjoyable and not to stressful
I do often 'what if' about giving up work when I had the kids to be a sahm as didn't want to go back to teaching after having a break and am happy in my job but it is low status and low pay

whatcolourthough · 13/11/2019 09:23

17500 first grad job out of uni at 22.
27k at 24 as i moved cities.
35k with another company move at 26

75k at age 33 with promotion.

historysock · 13/11/2019 09:55

16k at 22, 31k aged 30, and still now. Did earn more in between times but Have moved around jobs a lot, and had a bit of a breakdown a few years ago, so I've taken a few steps back salary wise unfortunately.

historysock · 13/11/2019 09:57

I'm now 39 it might have helped to say

Sassanacs · 13/11/2019 10:02

26 - £38k, now at 37 - fuck all.

SAHM wasting away, losing brain cells daily

DieCryHate · 13/11/2019 10:30

Early 20s: £17k
27: £25k
29: £30k
31: £50k

25-30k was pay rise and minor promotion but the rest were job changes.

amusedbush · 13/11/2019 10:33

18: £10k

21: £14.5k

22: £18k

25: £22k

28: £25k

(now) 29: £28.5k

I'm a university admin and paid well for what I do. I'm in Scotland living costs are reasonable and also in the very fortunate position of having no mortgage due to DH inheriting a house.

Megan2018 · 13/11/2019 10:33

About £25k I think, working as a junior manager in HE. Now a senior manager in HE, salary approx £50k (but on mat leave and may return part time).
