About £15k in my early 20s - pretty good basic and a few extra allowances for a specialist lab role.

£17k now for almost the same role.

A fair bit has happened in between, but I'm effectively doing the same job as I did when I first started working over 30 years ago.

Alarae · 12/11/2019 17:05

First job from Uni was in asset management (property) - age 21 - 19k + 1-2k ish bonus

Change career to tax - age 23 - 20k

Now - age 26 - 46k

I have completed two qualifications in the last three years which explains the big jump in salary.

InMySpareTime · 12/11/2019 17:08

Early 20s: Part time deputy manager at a day nursery (0.5FTE) £7000
Now: self employed storyteller £3000

karala · 12/11/2019 17:08

I was 22 in 1979 and earning £7900 in a graduate role for a clothing company - I retired last year and my final salary was £59,000 - i worked in a senior educational role

massistar · 12/11/2019 17:09

Started on the phones in IT support at 24 earning 11.5k. Now mid 40s with same company but creating IT solutions and earning 63k plus bonuses. Not been a bad career path when I put it like that! But the 11.5k really didn't reflect my 5 year degree!

neversleepagain · 12/11/2019 17:10

Age 23 starting salary as a teacher was 22k
In my last year of teaching my salary was 42k at age 33.
I am 40 now and work 20 hours per week (not in teaching) and I earn 18k.

Surfskatefamily · 12/11/2019 17:10

Age 17 - call centre £15,000
Age 21 - financial advice £32000 + bonus so around £45k
Age 28 - £11000 cleaner
Had a mental breakdown and sick with stress so total rethink in what I need from life

DeNiroDeFaro · 12/11/2019 17:12

24 in London, on £25k as a project assistant.
Now 28 in London, on £50k as a policy advisor

Coldemort · 12/11/2019 17:12

Early 20's call centre customer service: £13,500 on the south coast.
Late 20's £17,500 plus commission (Around £26,000) Account Handler - again south coast.
Now late 30'3 £30,000 underwriter up North.

Biggest change has been how much further my money goes not being down south, my rent (now mortgage) nearly halved.

OublietteBravo · 12/11/2019 17:16

I was a PhD student in my early 20s on £10k per year (including London weighting).

Own business with DH. Worked 6 and 7 day weeks. Pay was ok, but it was incredibly stressful and busy.
Sold business.

MeVersionThree · 12/11/2019 17:18

22 - less than 20k

now - mid 60ks

3 promotions in last ten years is most of the difference, wage mostly static/only cost of living rises in entry level grad jobs until late 20s

Expressedways · 12/11/2019 17:18

Mid 20s - receptionist on 25k
Now, early 30s - executive assistant on 50k

Besidesthepoint · 12/11/2019 17:20

Early twenties: minimum wage

Early 20’s started on £18k. Then finished that career on £36k. Stopped due to dc.
Went on to the job I have now in school admin on £19 (back where I started pretty much) but get school holidays off. Though I don’t like earning less than what I was previously on. Pro rata it’s £24k.

Salary now is confidential but in 1987 as an early computer programmer it was £6,883 ... the chip on my shoulder wanted loads more but in reality it wasn't. It was a great time to be in computing... almost at the forefront of something exciting. It's boring as hell now at 55...
