Holding in farts

Kittykat93 · 24/10/2019 20:01

I am so sorry to even make this thread but I need help. I have IBS, and have recently started dating somebody. We spend a couple of evenings together a week, and things are going well and I do feel comfortable with him.

However. I spend half the night squirming around feeling like I need to let rip! That sounds gross and I'm sorry but I really am a windy person and I can't help it I hate it :(

It's really painful and obviously I do go to the bathroom to let some go but I can't spend the whole night in there!

This problem sounds ridiculous I'm aware, but it's actually really getting me down. I was falling asleep last night and all of a sudden was awoken by a huge trumpet sound which I very quickly realised was me!!!!! Its because I'm holding them in all night!! Blush

Please, how do I reduce this problem? Give me all of your remedies. I'll try anything.

Thank you if you've managed to read that to the end :)

Windeaze....ummm there is another one that eases gas that's quite chalky....buscapam change your diet a bit?

I know how you feel I was on a camp held it in constantly the girl on the top bunk thought she was going to get blown away Blush

slipperywhensparticus · 24/10/2019 20:06

Warm apple juice is another one I've read about I've not tried it yet

Kittykat93 · 24/10/2019 20:07

Thank you for replying! Haven't actually tried any medication for it yet but will definitely look into it if it might help. Its awful!!!

Go out for walks together and perfect the silent fart. Always fart facing into the wind though.

slipperywhensparticus · 24/10/2019 20:11

Buscapam definitely works I used to work in a windowless office it was needed!

GorkyMcPorky · 24/10/2019 20:12

I think you just have to be honest. My DB's GF has IBS and they just joke about her farts. Can't be helped.

Kittykat93 · 24/10/2019 20:13

GrinGrin loving the romantic walk suggestion but yes knowing my luck the gust of wind (from my arse) would probably blow directly into his face!

Drink peppermint tea or if you can get it spearmint tea, if you drink it regularly it really helps. If you don't like those then fennel tea is good also.

Duchessofealing · 24/10/2019 20:21

Charcoal biscuits might help

BuzzShitbagBobbly · 24/10/2019 20:21

If you sit heavily on a duvet/mattress/similar you can dampen/minimise the sound well. Not the smell though.

If you have IBS diagnosed, have you not been given dietary info and help to manage it though?

Likethebattle · 24/10/2019 20:38

I am windy due to IBS. I can sympathise with you as I used to have tummy pains holding it in at work and home. Once I was standing outside ASDA with DH and it was early days. I let rip silently but oh my god it was an utter guffer 🤮. Just as the smell hit a wee old lady went past on a mobility scooter. DH said ‘oh god she must be really ill to smell like that!’ And yes I did blame some poor elderly lady for my rotten arse.

Greyhound22 · 24/10/2019 20:43

I would go to the GP and get it diagnosed - it's not nice for you being in that much discomfort.

You can get buscopan from the chemist it should help as it stops your stomach from churning but you need it diagnosed really as there may be some other meds to help you.

Kittykat93 · 24/10/2019 20:57

To the poster who asked about getting advice about my IBS. They have given dietary advice which has definitely improved the going to the toilet side of things. However I know it's ridiculous but I'm more embarrassed discussing the wind issue. Godknows why!

Thank you all for the replies and suggestions. And good to know I'm not the only one who has this problem!

Activated charcoal tablets are good at getting rid of all the gas particles.
Wind settlers tablets help too.
I have IBS too and am often very bloated. My DP is used to me having to trump loads but it took me about 2 years to feel fully comfortable to let one rip when I needed to. Before then I would hold them in constantly and be in loads of pain.
Also avoid things in your diet with artificial sweeteners as they make gas worse. So does too much sugar as it ferments in your guts and swells some people up

cacklingmags · 24/10/2019 21:11

IBS here too. I am a mega farter, but a little circumspect around new people. Why not tell him - IBS is no big deal (apart from the shitting and the farting). If he is likely to dump you for letting rip, you might as well find out sooner rather than later and find a nicer bloke.

IceniSky · 24/10/2019 21:16

I get bad IBS but found going pescatarian really really reduced the gas. I tend now to just get gut spasms now but not so much gas.

Kittykat93 · 24/10/2019 21:17

I did consider just telling him. But I keep chickening out.

LittleLongDog · 24/10/2019 21:27

If you sit heavily on a duvet/mattress/similar you can dampen/minimise the sound well.
Or it could vibrate loudly out of the sides like a rumbling trumpet. Risky.

Kittykat93 · 24/10/2019 21:31

Oh christ. Not trying that one then Grin

peakygal · 24/10/2019 21:34

I feel your pain...I have IBS too and Im extremely windy...Thankfully they rarely smell but they can be ridiculously loud Blush

TwistinMyMelon · 24/10/2019 21:42

@Likethebattle

Omg that reminds me of once when I was out shopping with my friend, we were in Superdrug and I was so desperate to fart. I just made it outside but it was so bad even in the open air. There was a homeless bloke sat outside and my friend thought it was him. Blush

Kittykat93 · 24/10/2019 21:43

It's awful isn't it. I also suffer with repeated cystitis and have done since I was 14. Just sick of being embarrassed of my body and wish I could just accept it and be upfront so people know what they are getting themselves into Grin

OP posts:
Grandadwasthatyou · 24/10/2019 21:44

Oh God, I know exactly how you feel. I used to work night shift, it was absolute agony trying to hold farts in all night. As soon as I got to my car in the morning I would let rip.
Even now it is a family joke. The dc can hear me from upstairs. I always blame my dh with a straight face. I don't know how the hell I managed to hold them in when I was first going out with now DH. I just sit and literally fart all night.

calilark · 24/10/2019 21:45

I have IBS and am incredibly windy, until I cut all bread and sugar out. I basically started a keto-esque diet, and the difference was incredible. Properly noticeable. I've well fallen off the wagon though and feel crappy, really windy and bloated so I need to get back on it.
