What do you still buy that you're convinced no one else still does?

Title may have been a slight exaggeration, but is there anything you continue to purchase ( be it groceries, cleaning products, home bits etc) that is maybe seen as outdated, useless, old fashioned or just generally unliked by the masses , that you continue to buy?

Mine is Fisherman's Friend. I love them but have never found anyone else who still buys them!

I think I'm going to have to make a flan this week. Just for me! I'm 36 wks pg so no explaining needed Grin

Jue01 · 15/10/2019 18:15

I always use boxes of washing powder. Tinned potatoes.
My DH loves toast toppers , I haven't been able to find them in a while though - does anyone else still buy them?

SamBeckett · 15/10/2019 18:23

Oh and not so much still buy but use , I still use a stove top kettle.

smemorata · 15/10/2019 18:31

Sambeckett- me too because I don't have enough worktop for an electric one. Plus I can't have the oven and kettle on at the same time!

SomewhereInbetween1 · 15/10/2019 18:33

samBeckett actually making soap from scratch is really difficult and involves lye. Making your own scented soaps from moisturising soap bases and essential oils is much easier and just requires a mould and a ban-marie 😊

@SomewhereInbetween1 I bought a 3 pack of fisherman’s friends last week, so definitely not just you. I’d love to find somewhere selling the cherry ones locally.

horse4course · 15/10/2019 18:37

I don't buy any of these but enjoy the nostalgia.

I think fish paste is much underrated, you can make your own with a tin of sardines, some kind of cream/yoghurt and a squeeze of lemon. Yummo

UnderHisEyeBall · 15/10/2019 18:38

Black treacle

LeveeOHsaNotLeveoSAH · 15/10/2019 18:40

Washing powder in a cardboard box.

Florence08 · 15/10/2019 18:42

Soap
Evap - love it!
Trex for pastry
Witch hazel (though had to go to 3 different pharmacies to find it this summer) - fab kept in fridge to put on bites etc

KirstyJC · 15/10/2019 18:43

Elmlea. Often used to pour over trifle or flan made from the ready-made base, a tin of mandarin segments and quick-gel jelly. Yum!

And also Atora suet which makes great dumplings.

CMOTDibbler · 15/10/2019 18:45

Although you do need sodium hydroxide to make soap in the cold process, you just need water, oil and essential oil (plus colour if you wish) - then a jug, saucepan, thermometer and stick blender plus scales.

DS (13) makes it with pretty swirls etc, but it gets set in a cardboard box

WellTidy · 15/10/2019 18:45

Raspberry ruffles
Corned beef
Cream jif/cif
Big box of Ariel
Starch
Flan case, tinned mandarins and quick-jel
Suet (fondness for a Christmas pudding all year round)

BunchMunch · 15/10/2019 18:46

Boxed washing powder - Costco does huge boxes.

Kiwi shoe polish in the tin. Use a brush to apply / take off. Reminds me of my DDad who used to polish everyone's shoes on a Sunday night.

Spray starch for school shirt collars.

Povidone iodine - bought a bottle last year in the Canaries for a painful ingrown toenail - amazing stuff.

YouBigChump · 15/10/2019 18:46

Lipcote. There are all these fancy long lasting lipsticks but nothing beats this original.
Another Trex for pastry fan.

MorrisZapp · 15/10/2019 18:52

Coffee creams, often from Poundshops and bargain stores

OopsUpsideYourBed · 15/10/2019 18:53

Camp coffee
Granny's soap flakes
And I sometimes buy my husband (I won't eat it) little pots of Gentleman's Relish, purely so I can make childish comments.

Time40 · 15/10/2019 18:54

Sarsons gravy browning, 1 bottle lasts me ages as I only use a drop, I'm always worried it will be discontinued at some point as I don't know anyone else who uses it apart from my elderly mum

I do. One drop here, too ... have you ever had the experience of using too much of that stuff? Black gravy ...

Lipcote. There are all these fancy long lasting lipsticks but nothing beats this original.

Me too, for both those. Lipcote is brilliant. Trex is a bit hard to find, which is worrying.

PrivateSpidey · 15/10/2019 18:55

I love a coffee cream Morris. That was another Iceland find last year - little boxes of Whittaker's coffee creams and peppermint creams. I have got to get down there ASAP!

TeaAddict235 · 15/10/2019 19:00

Shoe polish in a tin
Beeswax for the furniture
Honey from the Imker
Salad cream
Kohlrabi (DH)

Fluffycloudland77 · 15/10/2019 19:01

Proper beef suet, use it at least once a week.
Arrowroot powder.
Spray on starch for dhs shirts. 21yo me would be horrified!.

MarkinTime · 15/10/2019 19:02

Epsom salts.
Evaporated milk ( I go through a can a day in my coffee )
Fussels condensed milk.
Brillo pads.
Lion midget gems and sport mixture. No other brand compares.
