What do you still buy that you're convinced no one else still does?

Title may have been a slight exaggeration, but is there anything you continue to purchase ( be it groceries, cleaning products, home bits etc) that is maybe seen as outdated, useless, old fashioned or just generally unliked by the masses , that you continue to buy?

Mine is Fisherman's Friend. I love them but have never found anyone else who still buys them!

I didn’t think anything but i clearly do based on other peoples purchases.

Cotton hankies, only men’s as they are bigger. Buy them in bulk from M&S outlet, the best. All our family love real hankies.
Bar soap especially Wright’s coal Tar, Dettol, imperial leather and Pears, I have Never taken to shower gel.
Vosene Original
Tinned potatoes
Marrowfat peas
Tinned broad beans
Salad Cream, only Heinz
Pickled onion monster munch
Bistro GRavy Powder, not those granules, the proper stuff that is probably just brown cornflour.
Agora - how else do you make dumplings???
Fry’s peppermint cream from B&M or Morrisons. To die for, buy them in bulk when i can.
Space Invaders Pickled Onion

notangelinajolie · 16/10/2019 19:44

Angel Delight
Ground Rice
Birds Trifle
Washing Powder
Cif (used to be Jif) Cream
Dandelion and Burdock

Earthling1994 · 16/10/2019 19:47

Oh and birds custard powder. Makes the best vegan custard

Retired65 · 16/10/2019 19:47

Lard for roasting potatoes, jif cleaning cream.

Retired65 · 16/10/2019 19:51

Also soap and my husband still uses handkerchiefs, dream topping, tins of fruit, quick jel and a ready made sponge base.

notangelinajolie · 16/10/2019 19:53

We lost my mum recently but these 2 were regulars on her shopping list.

Lard
Tripe

Lard - her pastry was the most amazing melt in your mouth pastry you could ever imagine.
Tripe - nothing would ever persuade me to eat this.

Wombleish · 16/10/2019 19:53

*RingPiece - I miss the cubed Smash. Used to eat it raw. You could get a big tin of it with the metal aliens on it.

I'd forgotten that Smash came in little cubes! 'For mash get Smash' Grin

Birds custard powder
Blancmange
Manor fruit cake
Angel Delight
Arctic Roll
Crispy pancakes

The 80's are alive and well in my house! Grin

maddiemookins16mum · 16/10/2019 19:55

Spam, Buttercup syrup (gets rid of sore throats, coughs, cold symptoms really well), bars of Imperial Leather.

Mumsy2103 · 16/10/2019 19:59

Bisto

justsotiredallthetime · 16/10/2019 19:59

@joyfullittlehippo - Nope, I buy bars of soap. Not a fan of squirty hand wash!

Teensruletheroost · 16/10/2019 20:01

Another shake n vac user here, it smells lovely Smile

MondeoFan · 16/10/2019 20:02

I still buy fish paste I think it's Shippmans the brand, crab flavour or sardines I don't think it's real fish
I have it on a baguette with a salad

EmpressoftheMundane · 16/10/2019 20:03

Silver polish.

ohwellherewegoagain · 16/10/2019 20:06

Hairspray.
Bisto gravy browning (why anyone uses gravy granules is beyond me boff!)
blancmange powder when I can get it
and if I am feeling really naughty, a dried vesta meal, either beef curry or chow mein. Of course the memory is better than the reality on that one....

isayhitocats · 16/10/2019 20:07

Frys chocolate (found in Iceland tonight! - I have bought loads!!)

Gypsyb1998 · 16/10/2019 20:12

I still use spray starch. Cannot get the original my mum used. I used to have to rewash my skirts and blouses as they came out like cardboard on the line!

Gypsyb1998 · 16/10/2019 20:14

Love salmon and shrimp paste by Shippams 😝

MeadowHay · 16/10/2019 20:14

I am finding this thread really funny as I was born in the 90s and I buy some of these things that people have mentioned, you would think I was too young but:

  • Tinned veg - e.g. tinned potatoes, tinned peas, tinned carrots...
  • Cherry drops - I've never met anyone else in God knows how long who buys these?
  • DH buys Fisherman Friends, I hate them lol. He also buys Peppermint creams and regularly drinks D&B. He's the same age as me btw.
  • Occasionally tinned fruit and tinned desserts like tinned rice pudding or tinned/packaged cakes in sweet sauces that you microwave. They were always a special treat for me as a child so they still feel like a treat now.
  • Bar soap - we tend to buy Dove, Imperial Leather, or Simple but we're not brand loyal.
Juliehooligan · 16/10/2019 20:15

Floral gums! Taste like perfume, but so divine!

@WitsEnding - I buy my stockings in John Lewis because the fit of their own brand 15 denier is just right for my size. I tend to buy in bulk.

Sometimes House of Fraser sell Charnos stockings, but for me the fit is OK but not perfect.

M&S sell lace top stockings (as well as hold ups) but the tops are so thick they will ruin your suspender clasps in no time.

As for hold ups, or maybe they should be called “fall downs”, I don’t trust them. I’ve had one embarrassing moment too many.

Sundancer77 · 16/10/2019 20:28

Um Bongo, chicken Kiev’s, potato cakes, Monster munch, Vanilla and/or cherry coke, Mintolas chocolates

Isleepinahedgefund · 16/10/2019 20:33

Bar soap here too! It’s deffo getting trendy now though.

Dried custard powder - never come across anyone else who buys it. As it languishes in small sad quantities on the bottom shelf of Sainsbury’s and is often out of stock, I gather I am one of very few.
