What do you still buy that you're convinced no one else still does?

Title may have been a slight exaggeration, but is there anything you continue to purchase ( be it groceries, cleaning products, home bits etc) that is maybe seen as outdated, useless, old fashioned or just generally unliked by the masses , that you continue to buy?

Mine is Fisherman's Friend. I love them but have never found anyone else who still buys them!

Brains faggots
Fray Bentos pies
Shiphams paste
We buy Aldi’s own angel delight.
My dh uses cotton hankies. I’m sure he got some from Matalan’s, I could be wrong.

I used to use washing powder until I had to get a plumber out to fix a thoroughly blocked pipe and he showed me the plug of washing powder that he pulled out of the pipe, it had set to a rubberish kind of consistency and completely blocked off the pipe. Liquid only for me now!

SunburstsOrMarbleHalls · 15/10/2019 23:00

@Time40 Yes I have had a few gravy browning disasters, once the someone knocked the door as I was carefully adding my usual drop and I jumped in shock, ended up with black salty tar.

@MrsDilligaf my mum used to use Burdalls gravy salt and switched to the liquid gravy browning when it was discontinued.

Glad to see there are a few posters that still use it as it has helped to alleviate my fear of it suddenly being discontinued before I get a chance to clear the shelves.

Has anyone said Camp Coffee yet?
I can only get it in Tesco and it's the only reason I ever go there. Every time I go camping, I get some to take, it reminds me of Guide camp years ago Grin
It's in a plastic bottle now though, not glass anymore

tobee · 15/10/2019 23:15

That's a great tip @TheSandman ! Why didn't I think of that? Grin

FurForksSake · 15/10/2019 23:15

We had mandarin flan, but always with elmlea! Do they still make that??

tobee · 15/10/2019 23:17

On the other hand I don't use gravy granules or gravy browning. I use the meat juices! Wink

Mac47 · 15/10/2019 23:27

Writing paper and envelopes. I like sending letters.
Someone up thread mentioned kiwi shoe polish and just the words transported me back to school shoe cleaning on a sunday night, that smell was lovely.

CrystalTits · 15/10/2019 23:46

Pease pudding. Can’t eat gammon without it!

Katinski · 16/10/2019 00:04

Oh! Camp coffee! A friend wanted some coffee flavoured yoghurt, so made it by adding Camp coffee to it. It worked a treat!

And I could earn extra pocket money by polishing my dad's shoes. And yes, I loved the smell.

Time40 · 16/10/2019 00:27

Oh gosh - can you really still get Camay soap? Ooooh ....

Time40 my grandma used a non steam iron until she passed away 5 years ago. A really old heavy iron thingy, heating it on the hob

Wow. Well, I'm very old-fashioned, but I don't take it quite so far. At least my vintage irons are electric. (I like the sound of your granny, pp. I bet I would have loved her house.)

On the other hand I don't use gravy granules or gravy browning. I use the meat juices

Yes, so do I, but it can come out a bit pale. The gravy browning is just to make it darker. I don't think it adds any taste; it's just a colouring.

EnthusiasmIsDisturbed · 16/10/2019 00:44

Cod in butter sauce. When I have been poorly this is what I always want with mash and peas

Bar soap - recently went back to it and it’s much better I feel cleaner and my pits don’t smell at all they often did before after washing. Love pears and coal tar but too drying for my skin so use olive oil soap

LittleAndOften · 16/10/2019 00:47

@Mac47 Basildon Bond?!

MrsFezziwig · 16/10/2019 00:50

ExhaustedGrinch one of the icecream shops in Edinburgh this summer was doing Caramac flavoured icecream! I remarked to the striplings behind the counter that I didn’t think they would be old enough to know what Caramac was and they looked at me blankly - I think they thought it was just a made up word rather than an actual thing.

I love lots of the stuff mentioned on here, including bar soap which never went out of fashion in my house - like PPs I’m always Hmm when posters get excited about “discovering” its ecofriendly qualities.

Radio Times.

Solid deodorant.

dontdoitop · 16/10/2019 00:57

@onlyhereforthefood

Pink and whites? Are you serious? Thanks to slimming world they've never been more popular

dontdoitop · 16/10/2019 01:00

And after a quick skim there's a plethora of "I'm the only one that buys bovril" 😂 clearly not. It's not retro just yet

RubbingHimSourly · 16/10/2019 01:03

Primula

ThighThighOfthigh · 16/10/2019 01:18

I have a pyjama case! I made it at school, in the 70s.

1forAll74 · 16/10/2019 01:32

I always, always buy bar soap, It's either Pears soap,or Wrights coal tar soap, and have been using it for over 60 years now. I also buy Brasso, and Vim scouring powder, oh and yes, always have Fishermens friends in the winter time.

Joe2019 · 16/10/2019 02:13

Bars of soap, so no plastic waste, and for the same reason have gone back to aerial washing powder in a cardboard box!

smugmug · 16/10/2019 02:31

@TeaAddict235 @MarkinTime I have bought kohlrabi in borough market , usually around January time

Morosou · 16/10/2019 02:56

I also buy Fishermans Friends. I don't know anyone else that does.

longwayoff · 16/10/2019 06:24

Hurrah for my breakfast, Bovril on toast. Never Marmite though, ugh.

historysock · 16/10/2019 06:32

Agreed longwayoff...Marmite is very grim. And yet people balk at my Bovril whilst offering Marmite as an alternative. Inexplicable.
